Bird Fan Posted December 23, 2005 CID Share Posted December 23, 2005 If it's always been slow, then it shouldn't be a grounding problem. Hmmmm.... It's gotta be Direcway's problem. One way to make sure it's not a grounding problem is by testing to see if there is static build-up in your cables. To get rid of the static, follow this: 1. Unplug your modem from the wall jack. 2. Unscrew the sat. in and out cables (make sure they're marked so you know which is which). 3. Put your thumb over both coaxiles for 30 seconds. 4. Screw back in. 5. Power up modem. 6. Go to testmy and take a speed test. Support may have told you to do that already; they told me to do that once, but that was level 2 support (although it isn't that advanced). thebetterhalf Posted February 21, 2006 CID Share Posted February 21, 2006 Hi, I'm new to this forum, but started with Direcway 3000 and upgraded to DW4000 in July 2002. I have download speeds of about 1400 kbps and upload of about 50 kbps. But, my pings don't look the greatest: Pinging www.testmy.net with 32 bytes of data time = 1942 ms TTL=53 time = 934 ms TTL=53 time = 868 ms TTL=53 time = 743 ms TTL=53 I skipped DW6000 at my installers recommendation (and by the postings am happy to have skipped it). Now I'm looking at DW7000 and was told by the Upgrade Department at Direcway that my 1000 ms pings should be cut in half. Wondering from the knowledgeable DW7000 users whether this is hype or truth? I don't think anyone is seeing 500ms pings... ghostmaster Posted February 21, 2006 CID Share Posted February 21, 2006 When the system is working correctly, I get around 650 to 800ms on pings. Average being about 725. Dway exaggerated on the "cut in half" part. But you would notice a nice jump in browsing. My advice is that I wouldn't upgrade until they fixed all the problems, spaceway is launched, or switch to Wild Blue.
php Posted February 21, 2006 CID Share Posted February 21, 2006 The ABSOLUTE best ping you can get with a 2 way system is around 473ms... that's just the time it takes the signal to travel 22,000 miles to the satellite, 22,000 from the satellite to NOC, 22,000 miles back to the satellite, and 22,000 miles back to your dish. 88,000 miles / 186,000 miles per second = 0.4731183 seconds (473ms) The speed of the radio waves will be slower due to interference, then there is the time to process the information at each location (only a couple ms total, but it still adds up) then you have congestion. And that's only to NOC and back.
thebetterhalf Posted February 22, 2006 CID Share Posted February 22, 2006 I'm not familiar with Spaceway, but I have checked on Wild Blue. It is no longer offered in Michigan, and won't be until end-of-year. There transponders on the current satellite are full and the new satellite won't be operational for Michigan until last quarter 2006. I was also told that Direcway uses encrypted video signals, which slows things down, compared to Wild Blue, which does not (all digital?). Also, browsing is mostly what I do, so I was curious which DW7000 improvement increases the browsing speeds over the DW4000?
fikester Posted February 22, 2006 CID Share Posted February 22, 2006 browsing speed to me is no different than the 6000.....have seen pings anywhere 625-3000 (typical ping is 725-1000) -- sure wish I had signed up for WB instead (better speeds, cheaper equipment/install costs)
