  1. karma?
  2. it's not just signal strength that has to do with speed. it might be some other devices around you, like cordless phones, that are affecting your speed. then again maybe your wireless is just slow. a 50 percent slowdown is not unusual, and you say your typical speed is 2500, so slightly less than half your cap. you can try changing the channel it uses by going into the routers setup, see if you can 'get away' from interference, but you might just be stuck at that speed.
  3. go to microsoft.com, go to the downloads section, then the games. there are several 200mb plus game demos there, and ms usually has good server performance.
  4. that is damned good performance with wpa.
  5. hm. good editing job.
  6. remember, don't just swap the plugs on the router. you have to swap the cable.
  7. wireless will always be slower than wired. i have the wpa encryption on and that leaves me at about 40 percent of wired speed.
  8. i think you're spamming newegg ads.

  10. well, the reason that i can understand they make a stink is that as opposed to a normal sat tv where all you do is receive on a dw you are actually transmitting back to the satellite. you transmit at 2 watts. that means with the signal strength over distance function it is mere milliwatts or fractions thereof once it reaches the bird. this is why grounding the system is so important. imagine you get a buildup of static electricity in the dish, or even worse a lightning strike on an improperly grounded dish. this could cause a discharge in the waveguide on the transmitter, causing a sudden spike in power levels. granted, a shortlived one, but a spike nonetheless. seeing as a geostationary bird is impossible to repair, and costly to put in place, the thought of someone firing a spike at the bird and causing one of the receiver signal amps to fry is something that raises the owners and operators hackles. i dont't know what the liability issues are like, as i have not seen the contract wi8th dw and the clauses therein concerning letting only qual'd personnel handle any adjustments, but imagine the bill for partially frying a bird.
  11. depends on what speed you are supposed to get.
  12. just slap a router on the sucker and hook up as many comps as you like. well, not really as many as you want, but as many as are useful anyway. router takes the one ethernet port from the modem and then distributes it to several connected comps. as a bonus you will normally get a firewall in the router and a wireless access point. cost around 35 to 50 bucks, more or less.
  13. well, what you would need to do is first of all figure out where to point the dish. (find out where the bird you're supposed to be using is, find out where you are, then use one of the sites that offers calcs on where you would need to point. some astronomy sites offer this. or google for it.) then you need to get in touch with dw to get them to decomission and recomission the modem i guess. don't know if they will make a stink due to the fact that you would be doing the point yourself etc. etc.
  14. hope this helps get the blues away. http://www.big-boys.com/articles/presidential.html
  15. that's pretty much all she wrote. what encryption are you running on the wireless?
  16. it's integrated into the board, and that makes it somewhat difficult and not to mention risky to remove....
  17. hm. interesting. and aggravating. thanks for the reply.
  18. well, someone was bored. but a good result.
  19. btw, there's nothing to /hate/ per se about using usb to connect. but if you can hook up your modem via netork cablkes and don't have a network port on the comp, a network card isn't all that expensive and easy to install. that will give you better performance.
  20. would the 20000th membership have to be a new member or can i just create an account? (or 3800 or so...)
  21. usually a laptop is a 2.5 inch hd, the connector is a 44 pin, it has the power and data in one. you can get adapters for it, so if you don't care muchj about more power consumption and less shock resistance, you could ducttape a 250 gig drive to the outside of the laptop and connect that, as long as the bios on the laptop plays along, and the ram depends pretty much on make and model. some have special needs, some just need expensive stuff, some can use standard sticks. depends on how much it's tweaked for powersaving etc. (your run of the mill ddr2 module is fairly powerhungry, but it is supposed to live in a mains-powered box, so it doesn't matter.
  22. its the ms mn700. both wired and not. but no activity on either the comp or the wireless, it is coming from adelphia.
  23. called tech support, they said there would be 'a little more than usual maintenance traffic for the next few months.' but it's not blinking from time to time, it looks like i'm running a speed test. and if it's the modem communicating with the isp, why is there activity to the router?
