I am a computer technician at computer co op in jackson, i have a A+ and CCNA certification and am completely stumped. I have 2 different customer PC's here that cannot connect to the internet in normal mode. I have completely uninstalled firewalls, disabled windows firewall and have AVG Free 8.0 running on each. They are completely virus/rootkit/spyware free. In normal windows I can ping, tracert, nslookup from cmd prompt with no problems.. even browse the local network, however no programs can connect its like a firewall or something is blocking them. However when I boot to safe-mode with networking I can connect with no problems at all, ie + firefox. Any ideas?

Well today, unfortunately I had to call comcast to pay a bill im VERY pissed at... they send me a bill for $133.25, last 2 months of service + a $15 late fee, haha. I almost laughed, thinking I never received last months bill, although I do live in a clusterfuck of an apartment mail gets thrown around here. After discussing the bullshitness of the extra $15 to attempt to get it removed, but cumcast doesn't care about its customers. I decided to see if I was really getting my moneys worth... :::.. testmy.net test results ..::: Download Connection is:: 12477 Kbps about 12.48 Mbps (tested with 12288 kB) Download Speed is:: 1523 kB/s Upload Connection is:: 1804 Kbps about 1.8 Mbps (tested with 5983 kB) Upload Speed is:: 220 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net (Main) Test Time:: 2008/08/04 - 12:42am D-Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-M9G2NHZAW U-Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-HEB4CF69I User Agent:: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0; WOW64; SLCC1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.04506; Media Center PC 5.0) [!] Results are not bad, I guess I cannot complain, not to mention wonderful utorrent speeds. Hows it going frost? I had some spare change around xmas time and bought myself a present for about $320 shipping included from newegg. Ended up being about $260ish after sending and receiving all rebates. For that change I was fortunate enough to get: 250GB 3GB/s sata Allendale 1.8GHz (stock) Core 2 Duo, OC'd to 2.25GHz 2gb kingston ram (667) 550 watt psu 4 12v rails 2x ATI Radeon x1650 256mb, crossfire evga mobo, 1066 fsb, hd audio...etc. Your average pc, but it SCREAMS on linux. -
Recently I invested in a dual boot scenario, via Windows XP Pro and Ubuntu's New Release of 8.04 Gusty Heron or something of that nature. But I tell you this 64bit/opensource software flys...I have never seen a comp this fast, my video card now has 64bit drivers and has improved fps dramatically. Played wow a few times to test it and its purely amazing, better performance than XP. Not to mention my testmy speeds, pings, tracerts have all dramatically improved, and I have no tweaks (etc. cablenut). I thought application hang was normal, apparently in windows and mac it is, I have yet to see an app hang. Not to mention the install was cake, and I didn't have to search aimlessly for drivers this dist package. If your looking into it, I personally love the switch, soon Ill be formating my windows partition to make moar room! RAWR! Let me know what you guys think, or if you have any questions, feel free.

i didn't quite catch that.. your saying its 2g's b/c its got the name "XPS" on it? its like a pair of sneakers your paying for the name??

It probably ends up at 2g because its with Dell©, if he would have invested 2 grand with newegg his system specs would be much much better. Reasons this system shouldn't have cost $2G. -Slow Ram (667mhz is nothing compared to today's DDR3 speeds, 1066-1800) -Slow FSB = 1066 (todays highend mobo's are at 1600's) -Doesn't even show spec's on motherboard (MAIN component) -2g's and he's not even SLI'd? Is this a joke? Despite the things above the PC will be good for any game he puts in it mostly.

What isn't illegal? This is America! We're we love to have our freedoms stripped from us! But anyways man, ghandi once said "If an eye for an eye, the whole world would be blind.". Asking isn't illegal either man! Edit: If its brought to my attention with some proof that its against forum rules to talk about that I will be glad to remove it.

I agree with s1, a couple years ago I pinged 18 to testmy consistantly now its triple digits! I'm sure theres much more computer users now than there was then... but damn... thats a shit load of speed reduction. -
Welcome! Knowledge is power so let these be known! Heres a small list of great programs I was recently introduced too: All of these programs are around 1MB or less(great for thumb drives!) All available from Micro$oft's technet website. Some of you may know them as sysinternals. Most of them were created by a guy named Mark Russinovich. Process Explorer: Provides ALOT of insight to how applications work, or if you just want to know what DLL's are doing what. (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx)(replaced it with my task manager ) Autoruns: Shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them! (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx)(Great for removing pesky 3rd party services/startup crap , show those 3rd party'rs whos in charge!) Process Monitor: This is an advanced monitoring tool that shows real-time file system, Registry and process/thread activity! (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx) I know all the default programs that can be used to view some of this information but these programs are much more advanced and show you MUCH more information, even every read and write to the HD. I learned about these in my network engineering class recently and these are just a few that I use, you can get a full list at the website, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/default.aspx. <snip> Thanks in Advance! Also I hope someone will really find these as useful as I did! edited: private info removed
