  1. DUDE I am So with you on that whole thing. I kicked my own ass too, and believe me, it wasn't easy damn thing keeps getting bigger my point, which you have re-inforced is that MANY people (not you or many people on here) have forgotten what parenting is, and we need to stop forgetting
  2. Hi there! This is testmy.net's forum and this is the place that You will find all the answers to questions you never thought to ask yourself. and THEN, well, and then, you too can be an uber geek.... see you have the opportunity to gain from everyone's knowledge here, unlike me... (they keep me locked inside this little box and throw Barbie clothes in so that I can play dress up. Just call me the welcome wagon! No, it isn't' the size of my butt ) So this is how this stuff works: You post a question and we answer you. Our members will answer you too, you have the strength and power of THOUSANDS of smart peeps. (again, not me, I'm the girly thingy) As long as you are decent and not rude or obnoxious or a spammer, you'll fit right in. This is a dislexic group - oops, i mean diverse group and we all believe different things and have different views, yet somehow we manage to make it work (don't blame me, I'm a noob here). My first rule of thumb anywhere - and yeah, I'm a net junkie: READ. see if your question has been asked before. use the forum search tool, it's amazing (I have this crystal ball embedded in the server but don't tell anyone, I'm working on a patent). Check out the different boards (they are called forums if you don't know) and see what you can take away from here. We love guests, but we love people that talk to us too, so if you merely click that register button *up there, points* then you too can join the fray (oops, I mean fun). Don't be afraid to post, and don't take the posts wrong, everyone here is a nice person - don't forget that text can't show you smiles or laughter (at themselves) ANY fears or questions? PM a mod, that's really what we do here, we take care of the endless amount of questions (up to and including the color of the shoes we wear) If you really want to know, CA3LE is the ingenious founder of this marvelous site, and he pioneered the technology a while back, He did so well that there are ISP's that now send THEIR customers her to get accurate readins in order to troubleshoot the connection speeds. AND to boost that even futher, he created these forums that can help in ways you will never imagine, think of it! You get wireless ISP help, cablenut setting advancements AND the off topic BS that creates a family. Don't be afraid of the mods. the only one that bites is me, and I'm usually behind lock and key... the rest are ... well.... OK they're weird too, but they're all geeks, so what do you expect? So come in, say hi - new or old members (show 'em how it's done) , I'm going to fire up the grill and if you want a burger, let me know, I'll squish one through the modem (disclaimer: testmy.net is not responsible for the actions of water or the repercussions to your computer) see ya 'round the place (I HOPE)
  3. OK, far be it from me to say I told you so. BUT the District Attorney of Colorado has made a statement that charges will not be filed against John Mark Carr because his DNA doesn't match that which was found at the scene or on her. This is a PERFECT example of why we should not allow the media to be so entrenched in our lives. We've al lost a week of our lives, in some way we have heard this story, been involved in discussions about it (except tommie who lives in the backwoods ) and Agrr3 who is on the flat part of the world ( LOL ) and of course, I will not talk about Shug and Cholla's little man loving that goes on.... (It's over there *points* ). But this poor family has been hounded by the media yet again, and some lying scum has now gotten famous because of our media's Jerry Springer mentality. We have to find some way to control this....
  4. Most network cards utilize an on board chip to handle processing incoming and outgoing traffic; however, it appears (from you description of the cpu vs. throughput options) that your network card is likely putting some of the load of handling traffic onto the CPU and the Operating System's drivers. PCI network cards are relatively cheap these days, so you may want to consider picking one up to see if it makes a difference. (They are about $10 at many stores)
  5. Can you provide us with the make and model of your motherboard? Linux should be able to support this card at higher resolutions, but right now Linux does not have the drivers for your card, so it is displaying everything in default VGA mode.
  6. That's interesting that it would obtain a different speed than your other system did. On your old system, is the NIC integrated or is it on a PCI card that you can swap over to the new system?. It would be interesting to see if this is NIC related or software related. My guess would be software, but I don't want to jump to that conclusion just yet as this is a brand new machine.
  7. Swimmer: I agree this could work, but there is absolutely no documentation on how to write it. We can guess at it, but it would be a long process and would probably at some point cut him off from the internet (and from myself which would be a travesty even though I don't know this guy, but he's a guy ) I'm sticking with the bottom line: keep the router in his room, and unplug at will. OR if someone on this forum has access to documentation on the syantax for firewall rules for a Westell router, what we would want to do is create a rule to drop all incoming traffic with a destination IP that matches her computer. Then again, if ya'll wanna risk it, lemme know - I'll get Jimmy working on writing something! "D
  8. she'll find a way, kids are insidiously intellingent and resourceful. Just a head's up, don't consider it a premanent fix is all I'm saying.
  9. well there you go, dlewis won the race. Good job buddy! Just remember she can change her IP with the click of a mouse and be back online.
  10. Well my friend, I'm afraid I have some bad news. I could be wrong and I hope I am - but here is what I found out. The router you bought does have mac address filtering, but only for wireless connections, not for hard wired connections. With that information I can tell you that the only way around her ability to get on-line is to physically pull the wire. (I keep my router in my bedroom so I can do that with my kids.) There are some things you can do to keep the kid off the net on the kid's computer, but kids have a tendency to either know how to get around that or friends who can figure it out for them. Software is never a 100 % fix. The good news is a new router is only 20 - 40 bucks at wal mart, and despite what everyone who is L33T likes to think, name brands don't matter at all. Would you like some recommendations?
  11. There probably aren't options in the router to block access, but there should be options in the router to only allow access from certain mac addresses. See if you can find these in your router manual, if you aren't sure where to look, tell us the brand and model number of your router, and we will look it up for you.
  12. This is Water's Husband (I'm too lazy to post under my own name): The company that I work for also provides 900MHz wireless internet access using Waverider equipment. From the looks of the panel in your avatar, I'm going to venture to guess that the company you use for internet service doesn't use the same brand, but the principals should be the same. Generally, 900MHz equipment functions slightly different than 2.4GHz (802.11b) equipment. With 2.4GHz equipment, what generally happens is that there are tiers of service, depending on your distance from the tower. Your best case scenario is generally 54Mbps (or in some rare cases 108Mbps). However, when you distance yourself from the tower, it automatically re-negotiates your signal to a lower speed because there will be a significant amount of lost data if you try to send data at the same speed as you would when right next to the tower. 900MHz equipment, on the other hand, generally doesn't go through this extra step of trying to determine the best rate for your connection. Instead, it will attempt to communicate at the maximum speed the modem has been authorized to communicate with the tower at, but if the distance is too great, or if there is too much noise between the tower and the modem, the modem experiences a large amount of packet loss. To compensate for this, the modem will try to retry sending packets over and over until they finally go through, which will result in slowing down the speed of your connection. Now, as far as one computer having a slower connection than the other, this is most likely something that is going on outside of anything to do with the wireless connection you have with your ISP entirely, as the modem you have won't even know it's connecting to a different computer since both your systems are behind your Netgear router. What I would do to further your testing is to connect your new system directly to the wireless modem without the router involved and compare the speed that you get with that to the speed you get with your old computer hooked directly to your wireless connection. I'm 99% certain that they should be getting the same speed. Should that be the case, then try hard wiring each computer to the router (with the other computer completely unplugged from ther router) and testing each independently to see if speeds vary and see what happens. Anymore questions, I'll be glad to help. She keeps me locked in the closet just for occasions such as this.
  13. LMAO We were at "Put-In-Bay all day yesterday with my in-laws, there was this beautiful girl with a really long tatto in the small of her back. It was all in Chinese lettering. My mother in law whispers to the rest of us: What does that say? How do you know what it means? I said: it's either A: "Nature is my first and truest love" OR b. I made this tatto, and she thinks it says something really cool and powerful, but it really says 'Bob was here'. - Signed Bubba the Gay Tattoo Man OR C. If you can read this roll me over. I was betting on C.
  14. It would be better if you modified it to the hot chick being one of the hot chicks (tdawnaz roxers my soxors. )
  15. That big gray thing with the huge nose? I gave her pistachios and lured her away to the circus....
  16. I'll have my husband get on in a few and explain dial up and speeds... he's the #1 geek of the wireless company he works for.
  17. Yeah, I been meaning to ask you about that....
  18. *carries on* Philp: I'm not perverbial, I'm a real girl!
