Well...then technically... you do have a modem. What make and model. Have you tested and tweaked with the comp connected directly to the modem/router?

What are the makes and models of the routers? Are they configured the same? Are they broadcasting on the same channel. Tell me if I'm correct so far; you have a cable modem -> wireless router -> wireless router. When you get the good speed tests, you say you're hardwired. Is that direct to the modem, or hardwired to one of the routers?

I think that if it were illegal, the MS customer support folks would not re-activate the OS after a move to a new box. Using a the OEM disk that came with a bundled computer usually fails because it is looking for a string in the bios of the machine you are trying to load. This is especially true with Dell machines. Their OS disks and drivers are useless on anything but their own machines.You can use a generic OEM disk to load the OS and then enter any license key, whether that key came from a bundled computer or a retail box, just as long as that license is not being used on an active machine. Borrow an XP disk from a friend, it doesn't matter whether it is a SP1 or plain old XP. Load the machine while it is connected to the net and the setup disk will configure your NIC to get a minimal connection to download the actual files it will use for setup. I just moved the licenses from two defunct XP machines with PIII processors to new bigger machines, no problems with the set-up or the activation. They HAD to activated by phone as opposed to on-line, but thats a big savings when you don't have to throw away a license with a machine. I have another one to do next week. This one should be a real test. The OS originally came bundled with a Dell laptop which crashed and burned years ago. It then went into a dual PIII Xeon machine. That machine was reverted back to Win2K and used as a data server. And then the OS found its way into a 1.3 Gig AMD machine. with a cheapo MB. After two years of steady use in a college dorm room, that box is getting recycled and the OS is moving into a new P4 machine where it will live, probably until Longhorn comes out (forever).

I have two routers (one plugged in to the other) to recieve better signal from across the house. I don't get it, both the routers are wireless access points? Your using two to broadcast your wireless signal in your home? You don't have them side by side do you? Are they both broadcasting on the same channel? What is you signal like with just one of them hooked up?

I get the same thing on Adelphia. When connected directly to the modem, my software firewall catches it all. The majority of the hits are coming from China and Russia, but there is a fair share from Yahoo and google. Get this just as soon as the computer boots without a browser running. I keep a router insertred all the time to block this trash. Don't have this on Skynet and never had it happen as frequently (every five seconds) when I was on Verizon DSL.

I depend on a solid connection to get my work done. Anything below 2.5/512 slows me down. But I can make do with 1.5/384 in a pinch. Having a solid upstream connection is important. B

Do ya think? By the time the market is right enough for that, both DISH and DirecTV will have rolled out their HD services. Tis a shame tho...I've seen their programming and it was awesome. B

Read the fine print in the ad. They'll give you what they can give you.CO distance really restricts what they can doll out. At least they gave you the upload bump, that's good!

They put in that orange condiut in my neighborhood a couple of months ago. The work was done by both Verizon and contractors. They're out there today pulling fiber from vault to vault. I'm going crazy...this is like watching Santa on the neighbors rooftop. What's your location? This is Leesburg, VA. B

I'm gonna assume you've swapped cables and all that stuff. Sounds like everything points to the router, if it is slow on wi-fi too. Do you have another router you can sawp out to do a check? I have a similar setup, but using a linksys modem and routers. The only problem I've had down line from the router with speed decreases have been caused by heat. I had modem and routers stacked. Just happened to touch them one day and felt how hot they were getting. The wireless even shut itself down. I separated all the units and the problem disappeared. I'd make sure the cable from the modem to the router is good, then try a different router. I just did a search of the web, and I'm not seeing too many favorable posts for that model router. In fact, many state the same problems you are having. I'm using a Linksys WRT54G on one of my networks, and it has been flawless since March of 2003 when I bought it. Have updated the firmware once. Hey skipunk, Welcome to the forum! The advertised speeds are 6000/768. Ok, if i connect directly to my modem, I average 6.5 - 6.8 mb down and 760k up Looks like you're in pretty good shape. With five computers connected to your network, your stats are going to fall for individual computers, that is with all five on and accessing ther internet. You still look good at 3500 down and 760 up. Before you start trashing hardware, disconnect all computers from the network and test them individually, one computer connected to the netwoek at a time. Then address any problems that you might see with each individual connection.

I walked out my front door this morning to the sight of no less than three Verizon trucks. "What you boys doin", I asked..."FIBER" they said! They layed this in a couple of months ago, I've got a vault right in my back yard. They're gettin ready to turn it on in Leesburg, Virginia
