  1. put the lightning bolt IN its hand!
  2. OK.. I understand...you're starting with MP3 ...not a problem. Give me a little time to dig out some apps for you. The audio engine might be a bit much for you to mess with at this point. I have got some small apps that will do the conversion and boost bass all at the same time. I just don't know which machine they are on, or if I even have them loaded at this time. I'll have to go thru som files to find them. I'll be back on tomorrow and have some easy solutions for you. Email me one of you mp3 files so I can gauge what you are working with. If the file doesn't compress to a small enough file for you to email, then split it with HJSplit http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/#win32 and then send the parts to me. I run it thru and do a bass boost to see if it will do what you need, then tell you how to get the apps you need. B
  3. That's the beauty of digital...you don't lose quality. That's an analog thing...10% loss on every recording pass. What, if any, are the software programs you are using now to convert CD audio to MP3?
  4. There are probably other ways o do this, and perhaps easier, but I use the Kristal Audio Engine to enhance recordings. It is basically an audio mixing board with a bucket load of plugins. You'll have to convert to .WAV to import, apply the appropriate plugin, in this case you'll want to turn on the Kristallizer for the source channel and once you've gotten the desired results, convert back (with a separate app) to either CD audio or mp3..... I use this and NERO for all my audio stuff This is a free piece of software, very powerful, and easy to learn to use. Check it out http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/
  5. I know this thread has a little age on it, but I thought some of you might want to know of another solution for combining two ISPs to one network. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3706&item=5766863252&rd=1&ssPageName=WD1V#ebayphotohosting There are a couple of different companies making these things, the link above is the least expensive that I have been able to find.
  6. Keep the sig JUST-, ....just one question......what the hell IS that green thing? B
  7. Yea, they do make an extender, and from what I understand from the XBOX freaks at work, is that this capability will be offered with the new box too. The extender gives you a remote, just like the one that comes with XP MC to control/play all your media files that are stored on a remote PC attached to the network. With the XBOX 360 you Can do without the HTPC in the living room (game room/rec room...whatever) The XBOX 360, which is quiet, is all you need right there with your TV or big screen whatever. Our biggest problem with HTPCs has been keeping them cool and keeping them quiet. This solution takes care of that. Load all the movies and music on an old clunky noisy full of fans CHEAP pc in another room...control it with the quiet XBOX 360...PLUS have game play capability...all on one system, controlled with one remote. And...I've got to mention this again...HD 16:9 wide screen video output..."720p or 1080i resolutions and multichannel surround sound. " This thing is going to be sweet. Definitely on my 'got to have' list! Oh..and I've heard rumours of 300 to 400 a copy.... mostly speculation by the techs at work. That's based on the fact it is coming with a near complete OS and will be so much more than just a game box. If this thing does what they say its going to do, I'd give $500-$600 for it. But given the fact that MS is looking to grab market share with this release, I'm the sure the price is going to be easy to take. B B
  8. Indestructable, I've got an old HP ScanJet 6300c, its a 1200 dpi one pass scanner with a doc feeder and slide adapter, its USB and SCSI. This thing has been flawless for four years. This was an expensive scanner in its day, you can still find them used on ebay. I also have a HP 4070, has twice the resolution and scans faster than the 6300c.The 4070 can be had for a little over $100. Depends on what you're going to do with it. I really thought I needed the higher res, but turns out I still use the 6300 for most every thing. Mostly scanning in pix from the old family photo albums. Most of those pictures were taken in the 40s 50s 60s with cheap cameras, so the print isn't a real hi-res to begin with. Unless you're doing commercial graphics work, just about any $100~$200 scanner will satisfy all your needs. I know you said you want to go with HP, but you should also take a look at the Canon models. I think my next scanner, as wll as my next printer, will be Canon B
  9. I think the best developement at hand with the new XBOX 360 is the fact that it will be running an OS similar to XP Media Center, said to be an extended version, probably a version of Longhorn. You'll be able to access all your media files... music, videos...etc. with the remote capability of the XBOX from anywhere on your home network. This thing has got an ATI graphics card on board with HD...that's 16:9 wide screen capability native. Features a 20 GB hard drive which is removeable and upgradeable. Looks like Bill Gates has done what he had set out to do....bring Windows into the living room. This thing is not only attractive to gamers, but to folks who have been buying and building HTPCs. Has anyone heard or read what the new box will cost? http://money.cnn.com/2005/05/12/technology/personaltech/xbox360/index.htm?cnn=yes B
  10. not infected, just overloaded with junk. you have every toolbar and search assistant known to man loading at startup. get rid of that yahoo, zango, and AIM stuff. your computer will run like new. you don't need to have all that stuff running all the time. You can disable things like CD creator, the HP toolbox, Quick Time and the iTunes helper so that it does not load and run continuously at startup. You'd need a 3.0GHz machine with 3GB of ram to support all that running in the background. Its a waste of computer resources, and will bring your computer to a crawl. Speaking from experience, my daughters machine looks like this from time to time. she loads everything. You can keep all this stuff if you actually need it, just at least disable its ability to run at startup, and close the app when you finish with it. B
  11. I don't like SP2 because it tries to anticipate too much for me, it wants to make things easier for the user. That's great if all you do is use MS apps and nothing else. The prefetch feature of sp2 is a pain in the ass. It will actually slow down a machine after a short time, instead of making it faster, by loading too much junk into memory.
  12. Have you made changes to your configuration, added or removed hardware, installed or uninstalled programs?
  13. The 'system volume information file' holds restore points for the system restore function in Win2k and XP. In XP sp2 this is on by default. The OS is taking a snapshop of your computer configuration at intervals and when you install or uninstall programs. I believe the only control you have over this is to either turn it off or on and toi set the maximum file size that it can use. Go to 'control panel', then 'system' then click on the 'system restore' tab. Any further control would be thru the registry settings In Win2k you can easily delete this file, but windows will recreate it almost immediately, the new file will be about 20KB and of course you loose your restore points.I am not able to delete this file in XP, perhaps in safe mode. Don't know, I haven't tried it. more info here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/plan/faqsrwxp.mspx
  14. I've got three static available here with Skynet, but still use routers to take advantage of the hardware firewalls. I also use the individual IP addresses for video...video conferencing. HaloBox , what's the bump in price for the busness plan and the static IP addresses? Still waiting for FIOS here. It is in my back yard and they're doing installs all around me. Verizon has only been advertising the two plans here, 5/2 and 15/2. are you using a hub or a switch to feed the signal to your individual machines? B
  15. Why don't you like it? I'm running Win2kPro on my primary machine, XPPro SP2 on three others, I prefer the Win2K machine. B
  16. Just curious...what are you going to do with 5 IP addresses, how many machines are you running, and why would you eliminate the router? B
  17. That's drastic. Has anyone asked what monitor he's using? Check to see if the connection is good? This sounds like either a loss of sync, as a result of a bad/damaged cable, or as simple as a bent pin in the connector not making contact. This could also be that he attempted to change his display settings, which it does sound like he was doing, and selected a setting, either resolution, or monitor refresh rate, which his monitor does not support. Yes, emachines suck....if your a gamer, but for everyday surf the web and email, their fine. His has S3ProSavage8 video on board. That's a AGP 8X processor, limited only by the amount of ram installed. If he buys another video card for this machine, the best he can get is 4X. I'd buy more ram. What he needs to do before he spends money, is to check the physical condition of the cable and connectors. Try replacing the cable. If they're OK, then try to reset the display properties back to what they were. If that cannot be done, and he may not be able to do that if the display image is so messed up because it is out of sync....he won't be able to click on any buttons, then restart the computer in safe mode and remove...uninstall the video drivers for the S3 ProSavage, re boot and reinstall the drivers. (Hope you have your disk) If the on board video has gone south and you need to put a video card in this box, you'll have to uninstall the drivers any way before you install the new card. After seating the new card in the AGP slot, start the machine and the bios and windows willl detect the new card. The bios will automatically disable the onboard video.
  18. A DVD burner will also play and burn CDs. You can simply replace one of your CD dirves. ....and yes, that would be a dumb idea...just my opinion. Besides, what would you connect it to? You can only have 4 IDE devices attached. What are all your slots populated with now? Just curious.
  19. DVD Shrink is an excellent 'one click' solution for copying movies. But the downside, like peepnklown said, is that you give up some quality. That is where using a trio like SmartRipper, DVD2AVI, and TMPGEnc excels. You have full control over the quality of the process. It is more work, and may take a while to learn all the tricks, but once you've cracked it, the results are flawless. Tweaking these programs for quality takes no more effort than what you guys are doing to tweak your computers for speed....well worth the effort. go to: www.doom9.net for reviews and tutorial links of all DVD copy software.
  20. Chaintech is a good choice, very under rated line of products. These guys are really doin a good job with video integration. They're also an NVIDIA development partner. Make sure your ram is compatable with the new board. You might also want to consider this one. Very inexpensive board with a lot of features. Top quality http://usa.asus.com/products/mb/socketa/a7v8x-mx-se/overview.htm
  21. There is no patch to FIX this, a software patch cannot overcome a physical condition on a motherboard, The AGP 3.0 specification makes an 8x card backward compatable to 4x boards and "some" 2x boards. But that compatability ONLY allows the card to function at the speed of the motherboard slot specification. Using a new 8x card on the older 2x motherboards can possibly damage both the motherboard and the video card. The voltage requirements for the AGP specifications are all different. 1x is 3.3 (same as pci), 2x is 1.5, 4x provides 1.5 and 0.8. 8x is 0.8 volt. You can safely run an 8x card in a 4x slot and will realize a 10 fps loss. The proper voltage is available, but the bandwidth isn't.
  22. Have you gone into the bios and checked to see if you can switch AGP speed? And yes a mobo supporting only 2xAGP WILL slow down your new card to 2x, it cannot run any faster. You will lose close to 10fps running an 8x card in a 2x slot.
  23. Nice card, I'm running an ASUS with the FX 5200 Nvidia chip.... what's the mobo? You are most likely going to need a motherboard upgrade, or trade in the AGP for a PCI video card
