At times, perhaps because there is a timeout (?), no data is returned.  When the details are graphed out, they are continuous and just skip missing data and treat it as though there was no gap in the time period.

I'm trying to show my ISP when their performance is slow, or when there are total gaps in it, but these graphs and data results don't help to document when a report could not / was not generated.  In several cases I have documented this to be when other available speediest are either timing out or showing grossly underperforming speed.  There was a 4-5 hour gap in the data this morning, and I have no clue whether the utility was timing out or if something else was going on.

It continued to not work yesterday, but everything seems to be working fine now. I think the issue may have been on my end, although I'm not sure what. Regardless, I thank you for the help and for the swift reply! Have a nice day, and may God bless you.

I can't reproduce the issue.  Noticed a couple of issues inside the forum and fixed them.

Visiting the site as a member or guest, on different hosts and connections.  Surfing around, testing and everything is operating as expected.  Looking at https://testmy.net/live and test results seem to be flowing normally.

Please post a screenshot and include the page URL.

Might be a specific device issue and just a coincidence that it's during the updates I'm doing.

    Personally, I always use Netgear.

I might try the RAX30 -- on sale for $130 right now https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Nighthawk-5-Stream-Router-RAX30/dp/B09BK8PM1M/ -- get a used one fro $84.

For mesh, I have one of the early Orbi systems.  Very reliable.  I haven't seen any reason to upgrade.  Got my 10G network on the side so I use it more for wifi and base level router.

RBR50 and RBS50 go for less than $80 on eBay.  RBR50 is the router and RBS50 is the satellite unit.  If I had a lot of square feet to cover and wanted nice reliable wifi across the entire area I'd definitely get these again.

Significant leaps have been made since but to get the same coverage with an AX system will cost WAY more.  And do you really need it?

Personally, my fastest devices are all hardwired.  I don't care as much about wifi.  Wifi I have is fast enough and works reliably.  I value reliability and consistency most.

I recently went to my brother-in-law's who has fiber and wifi6.  It was cool, extremely fast right in his main area.  But then I go upstairs and was getting much slower speed, I mean I was directly above the router, just the floor blocking.

I'd rather cover my entire home with a slower stable connection than have one hot spot and a variable/poor connection everywhere else.  Especially if I can save money at the same time.

To be clear, he has a decent connection everywhere, I just think an RBR50 and RBS50 would cover it better for less money.  And for most people's daily use... they'd never tell the difference, speed wise.

Hell, get the RBR50 and RBS50... then connect a used RAX30 for wifi6 capabilities for the (near by) devices you want to be really fast.  Probably get all 3 on the secondary market for like $220.

    Bang for your buck.

Is there a way to get an alert (email/sms) when my dl/ul falls below a certain threshhold?... for example 5 consecutive d/l below 8Mb/s or 5 consecutive u/l below 300Kb/s, once per every 2 hours?

    That would be so handy!

CA3LE got a reaction from johnstonf in Change timezone on link?
    Hi Fred,

Let me explain first a little on how this part works on the backend.

When you first visit TestMy.net uses your IP address, it creates an anonymous "computer ID". This ID is unique to TestMy.net. TMN generates it based on your IP but for your privacy not even TestMy.net can reverse the number back into an IP from the computer ID alone. When you sign in testmy.net stores the same account details as before, except it points the database to your username. Saving tables by username instead of compID. When client results are queried, by compID or username, the database looks to the user's settings to check the timezone for that client.
I tried the same test on my own results using my computer ID and encountered a sort of bug. Closer inspection reviled the associated data, pulled from the database, for the GMT offset was showing blank. I then went to a different browser, where I wasn't signed in to check if it was setting the data correctly. The simple action of me hitting that page then fixed the bug by setting that associated data correctly in the database. So it corrected itself. But now I'm like, "what did that?"

So I'm not too sure what's happening there. I'm going to have to do testing to find how that got saved in the database as blank. Whatever it is, it effected my own results as well.

It's best to make sure you're always signed in when testing and then just share the username results that come up when you click My Results.

Sorry I don't have much documentation outside of discussion in the forum here. But I encourage people to hack the variables here to make TMN do different things.

Sometimes there are clues like &f=1 but there are hundreds of variables that are hidden. Here's an example where you can output ISP speed test results to csv or json.

https://testmy.net/hoststats/comcast_cable&csvout=1 (outputs full array in CSV)
https://testmy.net/hoststats/comcast_cable&csvout=2&monthsback=6 (outputs download, upload and latency averages in CSV)
https://testmy.net/hoststats/comcast_cable&csvout=1&easycsv=1 (outputs full array in CSV)
https://testmy.net/hoststats/comcast_cable&csvout=2&easycsv=1&monthsback=6 (outputs download, upload and latency averages in CSV)

One of those things I built to help someone in a specific case (researching broadband speed for a project) and never reviled it in the UI. There are entire other layers that tie into that function, it does all kinds of neat things.  Where for instance you enter an array of cities (or ISPs, countries, etc) and it aggregates all of the data. Insanely quick too, fully customizable you can aggregate lists of thousands of cities in a blink... where it's pulling the averages for each individual city and aggregating all of the data together.

I spent weeks working with that guy, building a pretty amazing function, one that surprised me... and then shared it with that one guy.  lol, done this too many times to count. I'll have to pull up that conversation to figure out how all of that works again. 🤔 --- and then share it.

There are also cases where I build functionality for myself and then never revile it in the UI.

&f=1 is a variable that tells the site the content is framed, inside of an iframe. This remove the header and footer on any existing page. Makes things easier to maintain because all code references one code base. Instead of making a separate program to pull stats in that iframe I use the same program but give you a switch you can flip to cause the page to be generated differently. There are ways I could obfuscate or limit this functionality to the client but I like giving you the control... you might want to use it in a different way than I intended but that's the entire idea to how TMN works.

    Fantastic work CA3LE ! 👍
Yes, that sounds COMPLETELY plausible (even after several beers this evening)
I'd not checked out my IP changes, though guess I could have done via my mac's log file an/or the routers log.
There's so much going on I've hardly known where to begin TBH.
My connection seems to regularly struggle for a few minutes at a time. Most noticeably whilst streaming TV. It starts playing up, I do a speed test, it tests out okay and streaming restarts, a few minutes later it's down, or struggling again... the graphs illustrate that perfectly.

I had one of their helpline techs on the phone line the other night, he was surprised that he was seeing my router appear and disappear from his view every couple of minutes whilst running tests & apparently setting up for longer term tests.
I was considering scripting something to run locally but decided to try a web search first and decided on trying testmy.net as it seemed (now confirmed, many thanks for your efforts & support) a great option.
This gives me some great ammo to go back to them with. I suspect there may be weather-related problems going on here as we've had our coldest weather for some considerable time here (north east UK) and a LOT of rain in the last few weeks.
I've been looking at upgrading from old 'copper line ADSL' to fibre (FTTP), which has recently arrived here (though I'm close to the town centre in a well populated area) but need to set aside some time to research & evaluate it against 5G and fibre/5G hybrid systems before I splash the cash and/or get tied in for a minimum term 🤦

    Thanks for the reply...

I'm not particularly bothered by the wild fluctuations, as long as the lowest speeds are high enough that everything keeps working.  Today, OUR load has been minimal - one computer doing little if anything with Internet data, and one TV at 720p - so basically 1 TV.

Attached (maybe) is the graph from 5 a.m. this morning to 10 pm this evening (not sure where it'll show up, but I uploaded it)...

All night it bounces around like crazy, and at 5 a.m. it jumps from 31 Mbps to 130, then back down to 80.  And starts a gradual decline until around 11:00 the lows are below 10 Mbps.  And gets worse.  Then shortly after noon it goes back up and stays at around 30 Mbps for a while, and around 2 pm, it falls on it's face with a whole BUNCH of values well below 1 Mbps and barely getting into the teens Mbps all the way through 10 pm...  So, at LEAST 8 HOURS of miserable performance on a Sunday night.  And it looked very much the same most evenings last week.  Generally it didn't deteriorate QUITE this early, but once it hit "kids coming home from school" time, it pretty much tanks every day.

We've got three towers the Home Internet uses (according to T-Mobile support).  One "has problems" and T-Mobile excluded our gateway from that one (I have no idea HOW they did this, but I was TOLD they did).  The tower it's USING (again, according to T-Mobile) is straight South about 2 blocks and I can see it from where the box is.  The third one is East and less than 1/4 mile, and again, I can look out the window at it.

Both cell phones act the same way when in 5G.  If I turn OFF 5G on the cell phones I get about 180 Mbps at WORST, and generally around 260.  This is all using speedtest.net.  Unfortunately, the HI box doesn't have the ability to exclude 5G and use LTE.  I presume it was the cheapest, simplest device they could come up with to provide at no additional charge.  Very little configurability and apparently not smart enough to pick the band/service/whatever that appears to have the most available capacity...

I can live with the wide fluctuations as long as they stay HIGH enough at the worst so the service doesn't get down to the point where it's unusable...  I'll try talking to T-Mobile Support again tomorrow, but if this service is going to be this crummy for an extended period, the Home Internet box is going back as we're within the 15-day window through this week.

Yes, I'm the developer behind all of TestMy.net. I taught myself how to program just so I could build this... and am still learning, every day well over 20 years later. I've had to become an expert in many fields to run this. Programming is just one aspect. Happens to be my favorite one and I wish I could just focus on that. Maybe one day.

I look forward to you seeing TestMy.net grow too. The new tools I'm brewing up right now are many years in the making and I can't wait to share them with everyone.

Correct link structure looks like this...

    <a href="https://testmy.net/quickstats/johnstonf?clientTime=1">johnstonf's Speed Test Results</a><iframe loading="lazy" src="https://testmy.net/quickstats/johnstonf?clientTime=1&f=1" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" height="435" width="100%"></iframe>
I made it so it adds that for you automatically now. If you open your results with the clientTime url the output of the embed button will add that variable to the code for you.

I'll make changes to the UI later so that's not a hidden function.

    Thank you

"Quality of Service (QoS) is used to set up priority to specific devices, services or applications within the network through the router, so that the maximum amount of available throughput and speed can be used."
    https://www.linksys.com/support-article?articleNum=137079

QoS allows you to prioritize bandwidth for specific clients, services or programs.

Basically it takes your connection and allocates bandwidth to your target machine before the rest of the network.

For example, you might want to prioritize your hardwired PC, you say that's most important. But others may want their VoIP or xbox to take priority.

I played with QoS in the early days but I've never had a real need for it. My connections are usually top tier.

If your connection is under 50 Mbps (obviously yours is) then QoS might not just help... it might be necessary.

Here's a good guide on the subject >> https://www.howtogeek.com/75660/the-beginners-guide-to-qos-on-your-router/ (the ads are extremely painful and they link to the wrong test but good information on QoS options and features)

If your router doesn't support QoS I'd recommend the Netgear Nighthawk AC1750. You can get them as cheap as $35 used. Search the Nighthawk AC1750 manual for QoS (page 49)

Having explained that. It looks like you've had a little improvement. But it's still spotty.

Maybe weather or dish placement are be to blame. What does HughesNet have to say?

You should run an automatic speed test. Here's some settings I might try for your connection. (Considering the bandwidth limitations and data cap.)

A longer test will give us more information.

On normal sign up it's displaying an error instead of prompting you to check your email. The email is still being sent, if you follow the link it works.

Update: As I submitted this topic, it prompted me to complete my account (I had already entered my email for this question, it just asked me to enter a username). Now I have my username at the top right of the page. Though, it never asked me for a password, so I'm not really sure if it created an account and if it did I'm not sure how I would sign in.
