  1. Thanks for that bit of advice. The computer will mainly be used as a family desktop and workstation. My wife deals with tons of voice files, a medical dictionary, microsoft word (tons of documents for work). Obviously we browse the net, she does photo editing, and in the future some video editing (not tons though). thanks again, Nick
  2. I'm in the market for a budget desktop. I am trying to choose between the Core 2 Duo or an Athlon 64 X2. I was just wondering which would be the better option for the money. thanks, Nick
  3. Hey guys, an emergency came up with my mother and I got to get to Chicago. I'm going to be staying with my sister who has SBC Yahoo DSL. She doesn't have a wireless router, so I would have to bring my WRT54G Linksys router. I'm running the tomato firmware on the router. I want to bring my router and a wireless game adapter to get my wife wireless access while we stay with family. She will need the wireless internet so that she can work on her PC. My question is, how do I setup the router with Yahoo DSL? Is the only difference the MTU? Should I switch it to a manual number or leave it at default? Is the WAN/Internet type DHCP, PPPoE, Static, PPTP, or L2TP? I'm assuming I only have to be concerned with wan/internet type and the MTU. If there's more please let me know. Thanks, Nick
  4. I have BF2 and BF2142. I don't have either of them installed at the moment. I am more of a console gamer. If you guys had to pick one of these to install which one would it be?
  5. Welcome to the testmy.net community. Glad to have you here!
  6. Thanks again Mud. I really appreciate it!
  7. Thanks Mudman, I don't want to shell out too much money for now. My next question is, can I just use the XP or Vista backup utility to make a backup for my customer's PC? If I can get away with doing this and it being enough I will be happy. thanks again
  8. Hi guys, I was wondering if someone could assist me in creating a backup for my PC customers. You see, I can remove malware very efficiently. But I hear people in security forums everywhere tell me I should create a backup of critical files and personal files for my customers in case something goes wrong when removing the malware. I've had good luck up until now without backing up people's PCs but I don't want to take the risk anymore. What if when I remove the malware it destroys the system? So, I was wondering if someone could help teach me how to make a good PC backup of critical files registry files, and personal files as well. Also, if you could give me directions on how to actually use the backup in case I need to it would be greatly appreciated! thanks, Nick
  9. I wouldn't download since you have the ability to stream. The way I understand it (thanks to JH2688) I believe to keep it legal it is optimal to stream for a few reasons. Downloading the movies will probably put you at a greater risk than streaming when it comes to PC infections. Streaming keeps it legal as well. I believe JH2688 said that downloading them is probably illegal anyway.
  10. I don't mean to sound goofy. It just seems too good to be true. Is this site and it's offerings legal or not? If it is legal, can you tell me how it's legal? thanks, Nick
  11. It turns out Microsoft enterprise 2007 is entirely corrupt on my computer. I couldn't make repairs to it or uninstall it. The only way to get rid of it would have been to go into the registry and delete entries. I don't have much experience editing the registry...so I did the next best thing. I hit ctrl alt delete and looked at the processes. I determined the process that put itself in the context menu was Microsoft Groove 2007. When I killed that process I could then right click on my desktop. If you kill the process it isn't enough because upon the next start up the process for the corrupt Groove software adds itself to the context menu again. This is exactly what caused the right click function to lock up on me . But I now needed a safe way to keep it off permanently without having to go into the registry and edit things (too risky if you don't know what you're doing there). Doing a bit of research I found a handy program over at softpedia.com. It's called Shell Ex View, and what it does is list the processes running on your PC the only difference is once you do a process of elimination with each process. Narrow it down to the problematic process. Then from this nifty program's interface you can permanently disable the process so that it never re-enables itself. Since I knew what the problematic process was initially it was very easy to get that corrupt process fixed with this program. So, if you're like me and are a novice at registry editing I definitely suggest you check this program out because it works! thanks again, Nick
  12. Everyone here have a blessed Happy New Year!
  13. Fixed! thanks guys, I figured it out. I had to uninstall the divx codec as well as spy sweeper and keep them gone!
  14. Title pretty much says it all. My xp computer has sp2 and when I right click anywhere on the desktop it locks the computer up and I have to reboot everytime. I have webroot spy sweeper and I heard this program adding a context menu item to my right click function causes the glitch. I disabled spy sweeper's ability to put in a context menu item. It didn't solve it. If anyone has a fix for this problem please share. I should also note I did all my safe mode malware/virus scans. thanks, Nick
  15. Hey all, I have a friend that is in the market for a new router. It has to be a G router. Can you guys recommend a router that is inexpensive, stable, and functional? Also, I might want to hack it for her with tomato or ddwrt so could you also consider something that would be hackable. Any help will be appreciated. thanks, Nick
  16. I just downloaded music from the walmart music store as well as amazon's music store. I can't burn an album without it glitching up and saying error next to each track through windows media player. I tried roxio as well and it stalled out as well. I've tried four different disks in case it was the disks. I even tried updating my disk drive via the web but there was no update. Can someone please help me get my cd burning capabilities back? thanks, Nick
  17. For now I decided to block the pings through the router since it works.
  18. It is best to block ping requests, isn't it? When I go into my router (tomato firmware) and I go under the firewall tab and block ping it actually passes the firewall security test. But then I get lag on xbox live even though it tells me I have an open NAT because I use upnp. So then I figured I would allow the router to reply to ping and then just configure the firewalls on the computer to block ping on each individual PC. That way I wouldn't lag while still remaining in tip top shape on each PC. I don't really know what to do other than switching to zone alarm or something instead of McAfee's firewall. It's a shame because I really got pretty familiar with the suite from them and I actually think it's pretty solid except for this latest issue of it not blocking ping when I request it to do so. Anyone that resolved this issue on their own please do post. I know if I had to wait for their tech support to help I'd be nothing but a skeleton in a chair and still nothing would be done about it!

  22. I want to thank you so much guys. You gave me some great advice to work with. Please feel free to add more if you think of it. Another question I thought of before I went to bed last night was insurance. Will that bite me in the butt and be too costly at first or can I afford the cost? Or, do I even need insurance? My gut tells me I probably do. Thanks Again guys
  23. Hey all, after years of some self taught experience I've decided I would like to start my own spyware/antivirus/malware removal business. I have the experience when it comes to cleaning PCs but I don't have the business savvy to get it up and running. I was wondering if anyone had some advice on how to get things started up fairly quickly and legally of course. As always I appreciate everyone's input. I'm not looking to retire from this but I would like to start up fixing a few computers a week. I have one major question as well...I was wondering if I used freeware programs to assist me to get rid of these baddies on people's PC's is that legal or illegal? I wouldn't want to get in trouble to where someone thinks I'm trying to sell these free programs. I just feel that my services and knowledge with certain freeware applications can be helpful to solving people's computer problems. If there are any other things I'm missing to protect myself legally please do comment. Thanks, Nick
  24. I would have to reinstall the firmware in order to find that info out. I might try it tomorrow and see what it says in the upper right corner of the screen. I don't recall what it said in that corner the last time I flashed it.
