  1. How's it going everyone? Just wanted to check in and say what's up to all of you in the testmy.net community. I also had a couple questions about setting up quality of service on a router that has tomato firmware on it. I check out a couple of blogs and had no luck using other people's settings. I really think it has to do with comcast and their power boost technology. I'm paying for the 16/2 connection which I was told recently by a tech that it was upgraded to 17/2.2. Meanwhile my download and upload speeds aren't even close to what I'm paying for. And my speed test from each site varies so much so that I'm stumped on what to put in for my upload and download values in the general inbound and outbound connection page. If anyone has successfully been able to get tomato qos to work with comcast please share some directions and screenshots as well if it's not too much trouble. Also, just to give you an idea of what's on my network I want all of these things to maintain low pings at all times if possible...2xbox 360s, a ps3, skype video/voice chat, (now for the PC games) dungeon runners, hellgate London, and exteel, windows live mail and of course web browsing. These are all the things that I would like to maintain low pings with if possible. I don't do any type of torrenting or anything so I don't need to set up rules for bittorrent. I also think I should set the xboxes up by mac addresses rather than by ports since the second one uses alternate ports sometimes the traffic doesn't get classified correctly. I've heard l7 filters can slow the router down and I've tested the l7 filter for the xboxes and only half of the traffic would get classified. The only way it seems to get classified correctly is by mac address. Should I classify the ps3 by ports or by mac address? Please inform me if there is a better way to classify the consoles to properly router traffic on my network. I really appreciate all the help I can get. Also, what is a truly accurate way to determine speeds to put in for inbound and outbound limits? Again each speed test on each site is so drastically different so which should I go with? The last thing I would like to know is I have a wrt300N linksys router version 1. I would like to flash ddrwt on this router now that there finally is a stable v24 version for this model of a router. When I flash I can get into the router settings after the flash through the router interface but I get no internet access no matter what I do. Then I reload the linksys firmware on the router and I get internet access again. If there is anyway to get internet access while ddwrt is loaded on the router please let me know. I know this post has lots of question that probably are scattered all over the place and I'm sorry for that. Thanks again!
  2. Tested out using a static ip and I got online fine but upnp does in fact stop working when connected to a static ip I assigned. My guess is that since I assigned an address outside of the router's dhcp range it doesn't even know the address has been manually assigned or handed out thus the reason upnp doesn't work with internal static ip address. Tell me what you think of this theory.
  3. Thanks for clearing up the fact that I should use my advertised speeds and not actual line speeds because otherwise I would still be scratching my head lol.
  4. I would use port forwarding but I have two xbox 360s that connect and there are no alternate ports that I can use for my second xbox. If I use port forwarding I can have one box with an open nat and one with intermediate or strict. This is where the upnp service comes in handy for me because it somehow picks alternate ports for the second box and then it gets to have an open nat like the first xbox. I've tried writing down those alternate ports to see if I used the same ports and same tcp and udp settings without upnp and it doesn't work with upnp off for some reason. So my other issue is that I did some research on linksys routers and upnp and it turns out upnp function in these routers is not reliable. So I went with the ddwrt firmware because it is more reliable and responsive. Take for example my ip address changes on my xbox from one day to then next...with ddwrt the router will respond quicker than linksys's firmare normally would. With linksys it would still have the ports open to the old ip address and then my network needs reset. So I got to thinking...if I set an internal static ip to each of my xboxes and it could work in conjunction with upnp I would be golden. I could set one to dmz but it would be lazy and that would leave a hole in my network.
  5. Is this even a useful feature? When I turn it on in my router and they ask me what my speed is for upload and download...should I use the slower upload and download speed results I get from this site or should I use speedtest.net or speakeasy which say my speed is faster? What is an optimal way to use this feature so nothing in my network takes up too much bandwith? Thanks
  6. Hey guys, I'd like to start by saying I have comcast and they use dynamic ip addresses. Now my question is, can I set my local computers and game consoles to a static ip address outside of my router's address pool? If so, what are the benefits and drawbacks to configuring each machine in my network this way. Also, I am using ddwrt firmware on my router. Can I use the upnp function for static addresses like you can with dynamic ones? Also, if this works with no drawbacks other than manually going in and applying each address in...will my computers get bumped offline for dhcp renew and release? Any info would be a great help. Thanks
  7. The computer I'm tweaking is on a wireless connection as well. I thought you should know that before I tweak. Sorry for not sharing sooner. Are my transfer rates sufficient for a wireless connection? Thanks again.
  8. What is the difference between the first .ccs file and the second if you don't mind me asking. Also, my transfer rate is definitely more stable than it was before it goes from 1400 KB to 700KB now. Is that stable enough or should I in fact keep trying different .ccs files? Obviously I will try your files first if you tell me these transfer rates aren't good enough. Also, a couple other questions if you don't mind. Should I block internet ping requests? I have two routers segmenting my network so there is no congestion. I was thinking to put one wired PC and one wireless PC on laptop b. And one wired xbox and one wireless xbox on router a. Router a will be closer to the modem and that is why the game systems would be on that router. But then I was thinking that I could keep the router a so that it could respond to ping and router b so that it cannot respond to ping. Any insight into a segmented network would be nice as it's hard for me to find info on this topic on the web. I know there is a lot of unrelated topics here please forgive me. I seek knowledge!!!
  9. Thanks, I appreciate it man. My transfer rates are more stable after using these settings. Thanks again!
  10. Still waiting for the cablenut settings. LOL thanks guys.
  11. Thanks for all the help. If this was your computer and your situation...which chill mat would you pick based on cost and efficiency? Thanks again.

  13. It's a hp pavilion dv9230us. http://www.amazon.com/Pavilion-DV9230US-Entertainment-Processor-SuperMulti/dp/B000M7T7VE
  14. The reason this happened was because I was doing scans on my system in safe mode. I made the mistake of running four programs at once with the laptop on a glass table. I normally turn a mini fan on in case it gets too hot. This time I forgot to turn the fan on and that is when it powered down. When I have many programs running like this it gets really warm. Also, when I am gaming it gets pretty warm. I'm just trying like heck to find a laptop cooler that will work right with my huge laptop.
  15. Hey all! I have a laptop with a 19 inch screen that gets so warm that it powers off. So, I guess I'm in the market for a chill mat...anyone have any recommendations for a laptop that big? Anyone that has any advice to share it would be appreciated!
  16. Thanks man, I will have to check it out tonight.
  17. Anyone know of a free/quality video converter? Something that can convert flv to avi files. Thanks for the help.
  18. Any such thing? How do you know what is legit or not? How do you check? And if so, I would like to know of some legal torrent sites.
  19. I have a huge DVD library and I would like to backup my DVDs onto my pc so that I may put the actual cases in storage. If this is legal (which I think it is because I own them obviously)...is there any freeware that is capable of taking a DVD and encoding it directly with divx? If there is a quick and easy method please give me insight. Thanks.
  20. Can anyone let me download a cablenut file for the new comcast blast package of 16/2? I really appreciate it!
