  1. Funny how "old" and "iPhone" do not constitute an oxymoron... For the case, I love my Antec P180 and although the motherboard is not inverted, the PSU is isolated from the mobo and thus the whole case stays cool. I agree that thermal-wise, it's probably not as good as that Lian-Li one, but it comes with half the price tag. I must warn you that although it is mainly aluminum, it is quite heavy, so you won't want to move it around too much. It is also quite large and has more drives than you need, but it's quiet and it's relatively discreet.
  2. I had it half fixed by reverting to an older version but there was still some trouble. I'l try uninstalling quicktime since I don't use it anyways; I only need the browser plugins.
  3. Funny how I thought pretty much the opposite In unrelated thoughts, Bird Fan, I listened to your quoted song this morning, and the intro is indeed the best part. Still, 10 000 days remains the best album imho edit: I just read that the "RrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrEAL fucking high on drugs" quote is also from Bill Hicks
  4. I got a new Ipod so I had to update Itunes for it to work because generation 7 ipods only work with itunes 7.4 or more. So I downloaded the most recent version from apple's website and tried installing, which seemed to go fine. Then I tried to start it and the window didn't appear. My computer seems to have loaded the program since it shows up in task manager (as well as Itunes helper) but there is no window and it won't play music if I try to open a file with it. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail. Itunes was working before I updated. Any suggestions how to fix that?
  5. I liked the first part, but that's probably mainly because it agrees with my ideas and values. Going into the second and third parts, I started hooking off because that was really conspiracy theory work and the subjectivity of the first part was outright gone. It really made me think of this: http://xkcd.com/258/ Now, that doesn't mean that I support the policies that were attacked, only that I do not believe all of these conspiracies. That doesn't mean that they are not true, but I think that the movie doesn't prove them to be true, thus further, impartial investigation would be required to have me convinced. Cognitive dissonance goes both ways.
  6. I might be repeating myself (acually, i am) but I do not understand computers. I read coknuck's comment, checked my ram (it was fine), thought i could try with a vga output instead of dvi, turned my monitor around (it was displaying "media disconnected" at that point, I see that my monitor's power cord isn't entirely fitted in but power is still being transmitted because the display is lit, I plug it in completely, check that the vga is plugged into the monitor (dvi is still plugged into the computer, that is running), return the monitor and TA DA! It's running. Now it can't be power output since there was already a message on the screen and I didn't touch the dvi plug, so I really don't know what the problem was. Most important thing is: it's fixed, and partially thanks to you guys. So yeah, thank you!
  7. When there is no POST, there is no bios, there is nothing that pops up on the screen, no noise other than the fans, so memtest is not an option.
  8. So I RMAed the board and received it today. Asus actually didnt charge me anything and gave me a brand new board (yay them). I assembled everything back together to find out... no POST, again! So now I'm in the dark. I think I took every possible precaution while assembling everything, the mobo was on an antistatic bag, was wearing an antistatic shirt and I grounded myself every 2 minutes. But still, there is the same problem, the fans go on but nothing, no beep, no HD activity, that's it. Is there anything I can do to try to find out where the problem is? Could it be with the cpu? The ram? A bad connection? I tried clearing the cmos and replugging everything, to no avail. Any suggestions on this before I go mad?
  9. I got the one mudmanc4 recommended after all, mainly because of its longer warranty than the refurbished one and the fact that the refurbished one had pretty low customer ratings too. I know, it's a bad reason, but I was really on the line about this and I had to pick one. The AMD one was also very slightly lighter too. I also bought a 8800GT today, I don't think I have ever spent so much money in one day! Still, I believe that I got good deals thanks to boxing day.
  10. I see that the second one is not refurbished, do you think that makes a difference?
  11. Yay! Boxing day in Canada! I found those two models that seem interesting, but I have to rush because they will be gone tomorrow. The first one seems particularly nice, although it is a bit heavier than the acer one i was previously looking at. Any comments? http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0665000FS10097096&catid=24193&logon=&langid=EN http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0926INGFS10096059&catid=20354&logon=&langid=EN
  12. Okay, thanks, I'l probably backup the documents I want and wipe the whole thing then reinstall it with Sata 0. The important thing is that I can access my documents now, not everything is backed up.
  13. So if I change my mobo for a different one, will I still be able to boot windows from my original hard drive? Or will I have to retrieve the files through a new install and using my old hard drive as an external hard drive? Or are none of these possible?
  14. I do it periodically to but I guess I didn't do it often enough this time. or maybe it's the fact that the computer was running.
  15. I did ground myself beforehand, but maybe it wasent enough and still got zapped... I assume that a SB can't really be replaced can it? Do you think that I can try to RMA it with a certain fee?
  16. I like messing with stuff. Sometimes, it's not a good idea. I was looking at how much I could overclock my E6600. I was able to boot at 3100 Mhz with a P5N-E sli mobo and Zalman cpu cooler. Then, I wanted to check the temperature of the southbridge so I opened the case and lightly touched it to see if it needed heatsink. Then, windows froze and I havent been able to POST since. I've tried erasing the cmos but to no avail. Is my mobo fried? How could lightly touching the surface of the southbridge have done so? It wasent even that hot... Still, I'l know next time.
  17. Mbps to kB/s is x1000/8 The reason is that M (mega) is 1000 times larger than k (kilo) and B (which is a byte) is 8 times larger than b (which is a bit) That would make a 3000 kB/s max download and 375 kB/s max upload. mb/s are the same as Mbps, but not the same as MB/s or MBps, the difference is the capital b. The "p" stands for "per", thus it is the same as a backslash.
  18. Seems sweet... but newegg won't ship to Canada and I can't find that model at a canadian e-tailor. Still, I'l keep it in mind if I don't find anything else. Edit: I found this: http://www.tddirect.ca/products/121931/Acer/LX_TH10Z_018/ The description doesn't state which OS it comes with but I read elsewhere that it was vista buisness. I could give it a try and if it's to slow or doesn't work with some programs, i'l go back to xp. So right now I think that's my best option. Keep sending other deals if you find them though.
  19. The laptop I own right now is a heavyweight (over 8 lbs without the power adapter) and I'm using it more and more to bring around with me, especially to school, to the point where it has become a problem; thus, I am shopping for a new, lighter one, something sub-4.5 lbs. I have a tower PC so for my power needs (multi-tasking, gaming, compiling big stuff) I'm fine, I'm really looking for something on the go that does not need at all to be powerful because I will be using it mostly for programming and writing lab reports. I could even live with 512 MB ram. Ideally it should have XP installed but I guess that Vista is ok, I know it just won't run on 512 MB ram. I'd want at least 60 GB hard drive and I don't really care about the processor, though I've always been more of an Intel person. I'd like a screen size around 13 inch or so, I would seldom use more than one window at a time anyways. Battery life is not important for I am pretty much always plugged in; as long as there is at least 1 hour charge, I'm fine. There needs to be a wireless connection, but I don't need it to be wireless-n compatible or anything. I would like to pay under 800$ for it because I won't be using it that much really, only a few times a week. I had been looking at an Everex (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=Suggested&Description=34-280) system but I read reviews that said that sometimes it wouldn't boot. My friend recommended a Dell XPS version but that's above my budget. Do you guys have any other suggestions? Ideally, I'd like to be able to have it shipped to Canada, but if there's a great deal that can't, I can have it shipped to the US and pick it up.
  20. so there's really nothing other than ram and GPU that you can upgrade on an oem machine?
  21. I know that it's a good overclocker but I doubt that the mobo can overclock anything. Note that I'm not trying to find if it's worth it, only if it is feasable, cause I could end up having a spare pentium dual core and nothing to do with it What if I changed the mobo? Do you think that I could get a mobo that could fit in the system and overclock to decent speeds for under 50$?
  22. I was wondering if it would be possible to upgrade an old pentium 4 to a Pentium Dual-Core on an HP machine. I'd have to check the version of his processor to make sure that it's an 800 mhz FSB, but I was wondering if the fact that he has an oem board would be a problem to the upgrade/would limit it's performance gain.
  23. Shug, I disagree with your approach that one should not use BT because of the fear that one might get an illegal torrent by mistake. If a site posts a torrent as legal I don't think that you can be morally blamed from downloading it even if it is illegal as long as to the best of your knowledge it is legal. Now it is true that you might get sued, but with Guantanamo you don't even need a reason to get imprisoned (okay, it's not an argument, but I wanted to stick it in there ), so for me legality is not an argument. I assume that with many free torrents there are links to donate if you like the program/media, which encourages freeware.
  24. Back on topic: Google got me this: http://newteevee.com/2007/03/03/ten-sites-for-free-and-legal-torrents/ legaltorrents.com is renovating its website right now though
