  1. Welcome bellskar This page should help you configure it how you want, but I warn you it's not as simple as on other WRT54G models. http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Linksys_WRT54G2 I would recommend the Tomato firmware but I'm afraid it isn't compatible with your model.
  2. I'm quite happy with my WRT54GL with Tomato firmware installed on it. You can get it for under 50$ if you shop around. It isn't a new model but I own 2 and I have been quite satisfied up to now.
  3. But sir! He started it! (points at Mudmanc4) Heh, I remember when that used to be a valid excuse
  4. Aaaargh, I am pissed, I just wrote a really long post and wanted to copy it before I pressed post and I missed the ctrl key and just replaced it with the letter "c" Well I don't feel like typing it again now, I might in a few hours when I have blown off my steam. I do suggest however that we start a different topic for global warming if some people still want to talk about the bottle filter.
  5. Yeah, I have seen that video too, pretty cool, although I agree he was a bit salesman-like. Roco, I doubt that we are talking about the same thing, I can't recall in the video the presenter saying it was carbon based. Might have missed it though.
  6. FIFA 09 has a 128MB vram minimum requirement, so I think that any video cart with 512MB vram costing at least 100$ should be future-proof enough, although for a home theater I tend to think that HDMI-out could be a good idea (I might do the switch myself, but I am as of yet unsure). The ram, etc. seems fine with the recommendations, but I would recommend installing a 64bit os in any case. If you want a quiet case, I am very happy with my antec p180, although it is pricey. The sonata III is based on the same acoustic technology and is somewhat cheaper, but it still costs over 100$ iirc.
  7. My family is going to china in the next few days and we are wondering what would be the cheapest/easiest way to have a cell phone over there to make local calls. A prepaid phone seems a good idea but apparently they only work in one country and we would like ot be able to use that phone when we are in the US also since our canadian phone plans are way expensive there. Also, if we could have a relatively far awat (1-year-ish) expiration date for the US minutes that would be cool. Is there such a phone/plan that could fit both our needs? Thanks in advance.
  8. Hey! Welcome to the forums and thanks for helping out with the tech advice. We also discuss plenty of random stuff on the forums and you're welcome to join in if you wish to do so.
  9. www.Anandtech.com www.fallacyfiles.org www.globalpost.com www.academicearth.com www.ted.com Well, I have others, but they are in french, so you wouldn't be very interested. I also didn't include webcomics, so I'l do a second list Webcomics: www.leastIcoulddo.com www.xkcd.com www.amazingsuperpowers.com www.channelate.com www.questionablecontent.net Oh, and for obvious reasons, I'm not including my porn
  10. There is nothing that shows up on the screen, so I can't get into the bios. There is no sign on the monitor that the computer was turned on. I havent tried using the jumpers to reset the bios, might do that next since I took the battery out.
  11. I have recieved an "old" computer from a friend that said that it suddenly stopped working, so it's mine now and I am trying to diagnose the problem to see where the fault is. When I switch the power on, the cpu fan starts, and I realized that the gpu fan didn't start, so I changed it for another one, which now works but is not screwed on the heatsink on the gpu. Now when I power the computer on, the cpu and gpu fans start but I get no post and no beep. I turned the computer on for a few minutes then turned it off and checked the heatskink temperature and it is not differentiable from that of the room, even with no fan on it (the fan is spinning but loose in the case. The first culprit I thought of would have been the video card that would have been fried, but wouldn't there have been a beep if that were the case. I would have liked to test the computer without a video card but the mobo doesn't have any video out, so I'm not too sure what to do. What do you think the culprit is? Things that might be relevant: -Mobo is Abit NF7-S -I only connected power switch from the front pannel, no usb are connected -My friend said he had recently added ram when it broke. I removed all but one stick of ram -I just noted that the northbridge's fan doesn't spin either
  12. By the 75 views and lack of answers, I assume that there is no such way or no well known way at least. I'l keep hoping since I'm not gonna do any of these purchases in the next two months.
  13. My roommate who owns the TV, amplifier and surround sound is moving out this summer, so I will need to be buying a TV and whatever is needed to replace the amp. I was wondering if it would be possible to use a computer with some kind of extra tuner-ish card as a hub to plug in my wii and ps2 so that I wouldn't need an extra amp. The plan right now would be to use a sound system such as the Logitech X-540 or something higher end, which I assume is cheaper than a standard surround sound system with a boxed amp. Of course, I would want my video games sounds to come out in surround. I plan on getting a 30 inch-ish HDTV if that is relevant. Is there a way to get what I want?
  14. It's not like Diablo 2 on minimum settings is a demanding game, and I think that my 8800 GT can handle sharing a little bit. Do you know of any drivers that would work? Apparently, it's not a problem to make it work in VMware workstation.
  15. Okay, I gave VirtualBox a try, and for the exception of a few non-whql compatible drivers, which I was able to ignore. So I installed XP as a guest (on an XP host, for now) and it installs ok, but somehow the vga adapter isn't recognized, and either automatically updating the driver or doing so through nvidia doesn't work, do you have insight on this? I gave the guest 64 mb video memory and enabled 3D emulation. I tried installing diablo 2 but the video test says my graphics adapter is incompatible and when I launch the game, the process launches and uses cpu but nothing changes on the screen. Also, is it possible to have the guest OS run on 16 bit color?
  16. I recently tried to install VMware workstation version 6.5.0 and the installation went well until one of the last steps where the program says it is "installing network components", at which point one of the svchost processes starts to use about 90% cpu time and doesn't stop as indicated by process explorer. The installation doesn't make progress either. I left my system like that for two hours and there was still no change. I finally killed the installation process, but svchost kept on using cpu time. I reboot and still the same. I couldn't uninstall VMware since it hadent really finished installing, so I had to go get a third party program to be able to reinstall over it and then cancel the installation, and after a reboot svchost was ok again. So I tried the installation again with no programs running in the background (I didn't turn off my AV, maybe I should have) and the same problem happenned. This time, I killed svchost and the installer sent a few errors, one WHQL related, but finished the installation. The svchost process restarts itself however and still takes all the cpu time. So I uninstall and try with version 6.5.1 of VMware from a torrent, with still the same result. This time however, uninstalling did not fix svchost and I had to use system restore. So now I'm not too sure what I should try, I really would like to use some kind of virtual machine, do you have any other programs to recommend or a way to install VMware properly?
  17. The video is nice, but there is the issue that the TV will be the only monitor I have so that might be a problem. Still, whenever I have the components available I'l give it a try.
  18. I plan on using a computer with a 7300 GT video card as a server one and I would like it to act a bit like an HTPC on a relatively old (circa 10 year old) cathodic TV which has RCA, composite and S-video in. I have tried to convert vga to s-video on the computer I use right now and somehow the image is extremely distorted, but when I use direct s-video to s-video from my laptop, it seems to work ok. So, my question is: What kind of maximum resolution can I expect by using s-video with an old tv? Would it be sufficient to play games that the video card can handle? Will the TV be automatically detected by windows when I boot? Okay, that's more than one question, but yeah... thanks for answering
  19. How much ram does vista recognize? To check, type dxdiag in the run command prompt. Have you enabled PAE? Try removing one stick of ram.
  20. There are too many maybes in there for it to be worth a try, but thx for the info.
  21. Anyone know if they are compatible in SLI? They have the same hardware in every respect, the only difference is that 9800 is compatible with triple SLI. Has anyone tried or heard of compatibility?
  22. If you have a router, it can probably be done through its configuration tool, although you might not be able to use it to limit the access of only one computer.
  23. I haven't seen "The Number 23", but from what I read, the premise is quite similar to what you are doing right now, taking an isolated case and searching the past for what could have predicted it. The same subplot about a 216 digit long number appears in Darren Aronofsky's movie Pi. A statistical analysis of all the numbers published in the media in the five years preceding September 11th would be interesting to determine its relevancy, but it would be extremely time consuming if possible at all.
  24. It's true that if you upgrade the mini up to the eee's specs, the eee is better, but I find it nice to have a cheaper option. If you want the larger hard drive and ram, I think you did the right choice.
  25. Too bad you already got it, the Dell Mini 9 might have interested you, at a much cheaper price http://www.anandtech.com/mobile/showdoc.aspx?i=3399 I might get one myself and give my current laptop to my sister. The main downside I find is the small hard drive, especially if I want to install Matlab (at least 510 mb), so I might want to upgrade to the 8 gb model. Do you guys think that XP or Linux takes less space on the hard drive, once all the programs are installed? 4 Gb is quite small, but then again I can remember my windows 95 pentium 2 which could not have a partition larger than 2 Gb
