it is because of failed hardware.. http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=175&p_created=1084205858&p_sid=*2T_CTLh&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9NTkmcF9wcm9kcz0xLDIwLDAmcF9jYXRzPSZwX3B2PTIuMjA7My51MCZwX2N2PSZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPWFuc3dlcnMuc2VhcmNoX25sJnBfc2NmX2xhbmc9MSZwX3BHz2U9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PXBvd2VyIGxpZ2h0&p_li=&p_topview=1 that should take care of this issue.. This is why you upgrade firmware via ethernet connections only!!!!

try and keep the wire runs below 300 ft.. otherwise you start to loose signal strength.. 1000megabits(gigabyte ethernet) should run around 12800Kbps that is using 1000/0.0078125 As long as you have a PCI nic you should not have a bottle neck.. PCI runs a 133MBps.. gigabyte ethernet is 125MBps

ahh yes.. dsl with a router..you need to put the modem into bridge mode.. read this http://www.netopia.com/support/technotes/hardware/CQG_020.html then read this for the setup of the router http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2210&p_created=1110937569&p_sid=*2T_CTLh&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MSZwX3Byb2RzPTAmcF9jYXRzPSZwX3B2PSZwX2N2PSZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPWFuc3dlcnMuc2VhcmNoX25sJnBfc2NmX2xhbmc9MSZwX3BHz2U9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PWNlbnR1cnl0ZWw*&p_li=&p_topview=1 I would keep the routing function on just incase you ever need an extra ip address..

http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Gigafast/EE400-R/ABC.htm Take a look at that.. then do that and forward it to your ip of the computer you want to use the program.. just make sure you have the right IP address.. you might want to go static if you dont want to have to redo this step every time.. start-run-cmd- ipconfig /all You might have to click virtual server..

What is wrong with my wireless router?
Swimmer replied to gotmilk's topic in Networking and Hardware
Ok the first problem I see with this is the word Kitchen.. This infers microwave in my mind. Microwaves are huge no-nos in the world of wireless networks. You are dropping more to the router because my guess would be it is farther than the other computer is from the kitchen. My suggestion, this may work may not, would be to try channel 11 and 1 just to see if you can get around the microwave. Also do you have a 2.4 ghz wireless phone in this kitchen? -
Most SOHO products dont offer more than 4 ports on the router. I am not aware of any router out there with more than a 4 or 5 port switch. WIth the switch you are removing alot as far as wiring the other computer. you can run one wire instead of 8-10 to different locations in the house.

it is under user management.. I dont have a 2000 based machine infront of me but i dont know that it is an option as far as the live of the password..

never knew that.. good point.. thanks for that info!

This might be linked to the fact that MS had problems with a security update site that would download a trojan that would hijack your computer.. It was a while ago and I never really heard much about it.. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=1093&e=2&u=/pcworld/120379

sounds like your computer might have been hijacked.. the MS paint lauch code might have been changed to ping a server and host torrents.. but that is highly unlikey in the short amount of time you were on the site.. You could try a windows restore to before the site and see what happens...

give this a try.. some of the users here rave about it.. http://www.download.com/Sygate-Personal-Firewall-Pro/3000-10435_4-10238422.html?tag=lst-0-10 I my self use Trendmicro's Internet Security Suite... I have used nortan and zonealarm on Comcast.. Never had a problem..

NAT is not a true firewall... all that it does is block incomming requests that the router doesnt know where to route.. so it will block some popups.. Hackers can still get though it.. as soon as you forward a port.. NAT is no longer a "firewall"
-
It might be the fact that the computer came pre installed with windows 2000.. and compaq doesnt supply OEM copies of the os so all of the files are on a protected partition.. changing the boot.ini should take care of this..

Did some research on this 007 spy stuff.. here is what i came up with.. http://www.spywareguide.com/product_show.php?id=1137 take a look at that..

I would power cycle the modem.. That would be unplug it for 10 min and then plug it back in.. I am almost positive that you should be getting the 4mbps upgrade no questions asked... You might have not got the new update for the modem..

Is Comcast and Vonage Compatable?
Swimmer replied to CowanMark75's topic in XFINITY (Comcast Cable Communications)
Ok they are not giving a 6 meg connection it is 6 megabits.. big difference.. Second try setting your call type to normal.. that should allow the user to have a 128kb/s connection and still not have dropped calls.. it does take about an hour for the request to be processed at the vonage center... Remember if you are surfing around the internet and calling at the same time the bandwidth isnt going to be there.. -
LE is limitied Edition.. basically it is the same core as the 5700 standard but with few rendering pipelines, slow clock speed, and slow memory... It is going to be quite slower than the standard 5700.. LE = SE
-
a wireless router or running an ethernet cable to your apt.. The other thing that could be happening is that the new line isnt registered with the phone company.. that is a special line because the other one was worn... I would let the teleco do their thing and just keep bothering them.. Do you have cable internet access out there?
-
Alright some of the problem could be the fact that Comcast just bought out Adelphia.. meaning that tons of users in that area were just added to thoses servers.. That was back on april 8th.. So give comcast some time to get their speeds back up and you should be happy.. If you want to hit them where it hurts tracert to comcast.net and look for anything over 100ms.. that is the standard for their service..

Help! I am in Iraq and stuck with this problem
Swimmer replied to kmack's topic in Networking and Hardware
could be using a germany satelite? or that was the closest US military installation.. isnt there an airbase in germany? -
Help! I am in Iraq and stuck with this problem
Swimmer replied to kmack's topic in Networking and Hardware
yeah but that doesnt mean that they technology will work in a feakin desert.... My guess is that they are limiting the bandwidth to the solders.. and using most of it for communications and other mission critical stuff.. plus they are only checking email.. you dont need a t1 to do that. -

Swimmer replied to kmack's topic in Networking and Hardware
I doubt it is a hub.. probally a switch.. of some type.. You are on satelite.. the slowest form of broadband.. Since you are in Iraq my guess is that weather and other solar activites are interfering with the transmission speeds of the satelites.. So what you see is what you are going to get.. I dont know enought about what the military has as far as internet to help ya very much.. -
I would guess 98.. maybe 2000.. on a 30 gig hard drive.. Sounds like he just need to reinstall WPM.. Or he has a serious spyware issue..

As far as i know you can not use both the USB and the lan connection at the same time... You there is no real difference between the Lan and USB connection.. because the speeds that this modem is used for is less than the 12Mbps speed of usb 1.1.. So you could connect it to you computer then run a cat5 cross over cable to the other pc... This means that you are going to have to have one pc on to have the other one work... A router takes out the need for the other pc to be on.. Wired is fast.. 100Mbps.. which you will never see on your connection.. However an 802.11g is 54Mbps.. this is still fast enough for you to share the connection with out seeing a huge speed loss... You are going to have to configure it correctly so that there isnt a gap but that isnt that big of a deal.. I would say if you are confortable i would run the ethernet cables.. how ever if you dont want to run the cables but want the router go with a linksys or dlink router... The only plus for the ethernet is the extra speed and the more advanced features such as streaming video over the network..
