  1. Yes, I'll be the Devil's Advocate... heheh I am the 1 soul that voted against it. (Well, I was when I started typing this...lol) Here's why... New Test :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 15304 Kbps about 15.3 Mbps (tested with 12160 KB) Download Speed is:: 1868 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Test Time:: Thu Mar 10 14:42:25 CST 2005 Bottom Line:: 273X faster than 56K 1MB download in 0.55 sec Diagnosis: Looks Great : 10.01 % faster than the average for host (35.111) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-PBFWNOSX8 No Progress Bar :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 24142 Kbps about 24.1 Mbps (tested with 12160 KB) Download Speed is:: 2947 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Test Time:: Thu Mar 10 14:43:32 CST 2005 Bottom Line:: 431X faster than 56K 1MB download in 0.35 sec Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 73.38 % faster than the average for host (35.111) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-X4K3HU0RV May only slow down this old arse computer... I'll try from a different machine in the office in a bit here...
  2. I'll check it out and see what I average... I don't use hardly any of my bandwidth honestly... I could probably donate 20 GB or so at least.... I'll PM ya and let you know what I come up with...
  3. Yes, I'd definately say you're running great on this server... Seems to be pretty accurate as compared to 'real life' transfers I see on my ftp server at the office .... As far as my location, I'm "right next door" to Texas.. .I'm in Baton Rouge, La.... Here's the traceroutes to the servers from my office.... Testmy.net Tracing route to testmy.net [67.19.36.6] over a maximum of 30 hops:
  4. At that rate, I Hope your new host isn't too tight with the bandwidth. ** ATTN Power Users!! Might I suggest to everyone that uses these tests frequently, make some sort of donation to CA3LE.... It's the least we can do for the work he and the mods have been putting into this site....
  5. Na, I don't think it's cached... try this Wendy.... do the test again.. except time it with the second hand of a watch while it's doing it.... see if it really is taking the same amount of time where it says "Bottom Line:: 70X faster than 56K 1MB download in 2.13 sec"..... If the actual time you measure is longer than what's stated, my suspicion is that the proxy is getting benchmarked rather than you and the results are coming back to you.... If it is accurate then the proxy is d/loading the pages and compressing them... then the time it takes for you to d/load the extremely compressed file is what your speed is being calculated from... (i.e. - what it thinks your time is for a 1 meg file is actually the time for like a 100k compressed file, or what have you...) Needless to say now, if a someone is using a service like that then all bets are off with the speed tests.... Most important thing is that the connection is adequate for your style of use.
  6. I was doing some tests from my office computer against this server, and the 2 mirrors... here are the results... Testmy.net :::.. 7. Fiber if it is in the roads then y cant they run it to my house? My guess would be cost. Doesn't seem like it would cost extra to do, but from what I've read fiber installations can take anywhere from a few hours to all day and then some.... Multiply that by the number of customers and it begins to be a big deal as far as man-hours.... Short and quick answer for Bellsouth?? stop at the pole and use the existing copper wires (not quite as good as fiber, but certainly capable of 100 megabit connections)....
  8. Actually, they did just upgrade a half a megabit within the last few weeks... Previously my scores were in the 2.5 Mbps range.. now they're consistantly @ 3 Mbps and sometimes better. The upstream didn't move any though... That was then.... 27 Jan 2005 Download 2559 kB/Sec. 12160-KB 6250114936314 Odysseus_____ bellsouth.net This is now.... :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 3106 Kbps about 3.1 Mbps (tested with 2992 KB) Download Speed is:: 379 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Test Time:: Wed Mar 9 23:51:04 CST 2005 Bottom Line:: 55X faster than 56K 1MB download in 2.7 sec Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 67.89 % faster than the average for host (bellsouth.net) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-EYA1XDO4T Anyway, Yes.. they should upgrade, as the competition is offering better packages for the same or less money. But if you've been with Bellsouth for any amount of time, you know they don't rush anything at all... Also, I don't know where you're located, but there's rumor that Bellsouth will be upgrading to 6 Mbps DSL and possibly a 12 Mbit package sometime this year perhaps. Bellsouth also has plans in the works for their FTTP (Fiber To The Premesis) project.... Reason they don't upgrade any faster (besides the obvious factors) is that Bellsouth's Internet provider market right now is people that are getting the lower DSL connections to replace dialup. I mean, DSL lite is what... $15 a month? People are eating it up.... there's probably 10 of those customers to every 1 Xtreme subscriber..... (Well, maybe not 10.. but you get my drift)
  9. I wouldn't be too worried about those temps. The Prescott cores from Intel are known to run a bit hotter than previous models... As far as the fanspeeds, check to make sure your configuration is set properly... for instance, on some of those software packages, the fanspeed is determined by a multiplier in the settings (MBM5 is like this I believe).... If that setting is wrong, the fanspeeds will be way off...
  10. Crap, I didn't even realize it was an upload... should I pwn that score right quick?
  11. Ok.. .something to make you go "hmmm..." Suppose they email you warning you of your approaching the limit... but you're already so close to the limit that by the time you get the email, you've gone over it... Man, I feel for those customer service reps.... gonna have some loooong days....
  12. Yep.. Sounds to me like someone dropped and broke the sample vial during the sample prep stage, or else they screwed it up some other way.... I've seen it happen in labs all the time (I don't work in medical labs, but I frequently service instruments in chemical labs and the same thing happens alot)... --- Or --- They're a secret society of blood-thirsty vampires and they want to take the rest of the vintage stuff you provided a sample of... Muuuaaahahahahahahahah!! or not....
  13. Most of these tweaks were already done to this machine at one time or another... but thanks nonetheless... Other users may benefit from these.
  14. http://www.proxyconn.com/partner_tech.asp What makes Proxyconn's technology unique? The Proxyconn Internet Accelerator utilizes the client-server approach to achieve up to 6x acceleration ratios for web content and email. Proxyconn Acceleration Server compresses web pages, images, animations, documents and HTTP headers, applying a vast array of mostly proprietary compression algorithms. Each data type is compressed using the compression scheme, optimal for this data type. For example, HTML pages can be compressed to less than 2% of the original size. This is 50:1 compression ratio. Already compressed JPEG and GIF images can be further compressed by up to 12x ! Caching on both the client and the server prevents unnecessary re-transmissions, while ensuring that only fresh and correct data is delivered to the end user. That sorta explains it....
  15. The hardest part of my job is getting out of bed in the morning to go to work.... The rest of it isn't so bad.... Awesome avatar btw AWG... you make that?
  16. I was on a LOS (Line Of Sight) wireless connection at my old office... it was supposed to be a 1 meg full duplex connection, which in most cases we actually got better than that... but the problem was the latency between when you actually clicked a link, and when it started load.... sometimes you had to wait a few seconds... Once it started going though, it wasn't all that bad... The company was called BroadBand IP
  17. Congrats on the upgrade..... The GB/day thing is kinda annoying, but over the course of everyday surfing and whatnot you'll be ok I'm sure.... Question though, when you reach your limit, does it just cut off? I mean, what happens if you're in the middle of a huge transfer and you're not able to resume it?
  18. I used to use www.2thumbswap.com ... but I haven't been there in a long time so I dunno.. For my new phone (Motorola V551) I bought the datacables and Bluetooth dongle for it... this way I can make my own MP3 ringers and transfer them to the phone.... If your phone supports MP3 ringtones, that's the best way to do it IMO....
  19. Point well made... But if I was going to spend mad cash like that I guess I'd just buy the NTG Datacenter next door to my office... that way I could recover the cost of that connection through business.... Their subscription is probably in the neighborhood of $500,000 a month or more..... ...From the www.ntg.com website.... Connectivity The NTG data network has diverse fiber feeds allowing for bandwidth capacity on demand. Current bandwidth subscription includes multiple DS-3 connections to Internet backbones for connectivity, and multiple OC-3 and OC-48 connections to ILEC and CLEC networks. I know for a fact there's 4 DS-3's... dunno how many OC-3 and OC-48 connections they have.... F00kin SWEET!!
  20. Been in that server room a long time now... I guess we're not gonna get those test results...
  21. lol... well, I was considering that too, but the boss probably wouldn't be to appreciative of it...
  22. Yeah, I'm just contemplating taking off early, driving home from the office, and checking up on this thread when I get there....
  23. Some benchmarks would be a cool thing to post....
