    I might do a trail offer on Charter cable for 3 months. They have recently upgraded their line here so I might be faster than dial up..

    I've received a few virus laden e-mails lately. So I've done some research and asked a few questions. Here's an answer I received:

    "The virus-laden emails are almost certainly coming from someone else's system, not yours. This type of infection, which exclusively infests Windows systems, uses a technique known as "spoofing," by which the virus or worm randomly selects an email address it finds on an infected computer. The virus/worm uses this address as the "From" address when it performs its mass-mailing routine rather than using the real email address of the user of the infected system. If your address happens to be the one randomly chosen, then anyone receiving one of these emails sees your email address as the apparent sender. In addition, if any messages bounce back (either because the address is no longer valid or the mail server finds the virus and rejects the message), you get hit with the bounce rather than the actual (unknowing) sender, even though the messages didn't come from your system and may be from addresses you've never heard of.

    Here's an example; Jane is using a computer infected with a Windows email virus or worm. Jane is either not using an antivirus program or does not have current virus definitions. When the virus/worm activates and runs, it randomly searches the Windows address book and finds the email address of Bill. The worm inserts Bill's email address into the "From" portion of an infected message, which it then sends to Janet. Janet then contacts Bill and complains that he sent her an infected message. When Bill scans his computer, the virus checker does not find anything, because his computer is not infected.

    There's really nothing you can do since the emails aren't coming from you. All you can do is notify all your friends and colleagues who have Windows systems and who would know your email address and get them to update their antivirus protection."

    Latency is everything.

    Actually satellite is capable of more, but with sharing and overcrowding it slows it, may not what the topic was about at the beginning, but would be noticeably faster.

    If you watched a 7700 operate for a while you wouldn't be obsessed with latency.... ;)

    Latency ONLY affects satellite performance when changing from one data stream to another. Other than that it's just a second or so loss in real time and would not be noticeable by the average user. What we DW users see is the break in data streams and latency to instruct the NOC server to complete the connection of our data.

    Right, but light speed at this point has not much affect on satellite connections. Actually latency is just the lag from one site to the other. Once the data stream is smooth and unbroken a real time second late won't mean much. In our case larger packets and unbroken data streams can render satellite much faster than cable. Some of my upload tests capped at 600 were a good example. Uncapped, who knows how fast satellite could be

    The downside is for example, if Sparky was trying to get an E-Bay page open and my unbroken data stream wouldn't let him in than he's unhappy.

    Signal strength down to a point, say 50 and above, really doesn't affect speed. I did the below test on a rainy day with an uncapped business account (expensive) with a new modem. Signal about 65.

    The installer should install a grounding block (about 1 inch square) at the antenna. The 2 cables from the modem go through it with connections on each side. The block has a screw clamp for a 10 or 12 gauge copper wire. That copper wire should be attached to a ground rod or an underground metal pipe. The idea is to give static electricity a path to earth so it doesn't interfere with the transmitter and modem.

    Not all telephone exchanges have local isp numbers, so any call to an internet provider generates long distance charges. It's cheaper to lease a pair of wires to the next exchange with a local call isp. So when AOL provided a local modem in the next exchange I leased a pair of wires to that exchange. At that time it was called "foreign exchange". Not cheap... :evil:

    We just had an attempt to tax ISP's like Direcway in Nevada. Come to find out it was lobbied by Charter cable because Charter has to add a franchise fee on their billing. They use poles and underground utilities for cables so that's where the tax comes in. We beat it though.. :haha:
