Sorry about that.  First it was trying to connect to the old server... then the username was missing on the new server... then it had so many failed attempts it locked out all the mirrors.

Everything should be working normally now.

In the transfer I forgot about that reference to the IP... also forgot that it has a special username.  Oops.  Only able to notice once I turned off the other server.  Even then, it only happened if you had selected express.  I didn't see the error myself at first because I wasn't selecting express.

I just upgraded the home server, I forgot about the reference to the old IP on the mirrors.  I'm trying to understand why it wasn't throwing an error for everyone, it should have.  I was able to test normal on all mirrors.  It's twisting my brain into knots because it should have given everyone that error. AHHH!  I'll have to look deeper.

At any rate, it's fixed.  Thank you for the report and sorry for the inconvenience.

Pgoodwin1 got a reaction from CA3LE in Error message if tested with Southeast server
when I'm on the DC server/TestMy.net Home page, and hit the Test My Internet button, I get a blank Safari page with only this message: "Could not connect: Host 'XX.XX.XX.XX' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL server" Note - I X'd out the real IP address.

It doesn't give me this error on the Dallas server. Also, if I go to the server select page and choose the DC server! it will run a Combined test if I choose the "Combined" link in the text/link box right below the Test My Internet button. However, when the test completes, if I hit the ReTest button, I get the same error.

On the Dallas server, I don't get this error message doing any of the above. Also, I've never had this error before today.

it exhibits this behavior on both the iMac running OS 10.9.5 and Safari 7.1 and my iPad 2 running iOS 7.1.2

I've tried resetting Safari - no help. Rebooted the computer - no change

Other info: if I run individual Download and Upload tests on the DC server, there are no issues.

Also, I've made no changes to either the iMac or iPad hardware or software. I don't know exactly how long ago this problem started. I noticed it today, but I haven't run Combined tests for a while. I've been running (almost exclusively) separate download and upload tests with fixed sizes on both the Dallas and DC servers the past few weeks

Pgoodwin1 reacted to CA3LE in Hello from a newbie and question re streaming while testing
    Welcome to TestMy.net bretherton!

So if I understand correctly you're having a hard time streaming all that porn. Streaming porn while testing definitely affects your results.

    Just messing with you dude.

But yeah, any transfer during the test will affect results. Your result will be your speed minus the transfer you having going on. If you add both together, stop the transfer and retest you'll get a result that matches. That's actually one way to test the accuracy of speed tests. TMN lines up in that test.

It happens to me all the time. I run a test and it's slower than normal. Sometimes down to 1 Mbps and sometimes only a few Mbps off my max. But it makes me think something's wrong, even if it's only a little because my connection normally runs on a flat curve (not much fluctuation). If it's severely affected it's usually because I have usenet going. Other times I've found transfers minimized that I slipped my mind. Various reasons but every time it makes sense and I go, "Oh yeah." ---

Funniest time it happened, kinda unrelated... I'm on my iMac which unless I'm purposely limiting my connection (for development) it always performs over 100 Mbps. Sometimes as high as 125 Mbps. Anyways. I run a test and I'm getting < 1Mbps. I run a multithread and my results are slightly higher. Then, I look at my bandwidth in Activity Monitor to make sure nothing else is going on... zilch. like 84 bytes in and out. I'm really confused. I run Mercury speed tests to Google [w/larger test images], Wordpress [w/extra large test images], Amazon (large images), Cloudfront, Tumblr [w/larger test images], National Geographic... a bunch of locations that have been testing really well for me... same thing. I'm running super slow... maximum I saw was about 2 Mbps. As I lean back in my chair to think I see my iPhone on the desk, with the effen cord plugged in. I was testing with it weeks earlier and I set the networking priority to use the iPhone's connection first. I had multiple streaming connections going while I plugged my phone in and nothing was disturbed so it never occurred to me that I was running off my Verizon connection. Which runs like crap in my office. I literally smacked myself in the forehead, I look closer at my TMN results, "Verizon Wireless" - damn it! I just wasn't paying attention. I unplug it, retest on Mercury to googleusercontent -- 121 Mbps. Mystery solved.

First thing you need to do if you want to improve your speed is stop wasting your time with all the other tests. TMN has far more capability that any other speed test online. It's a true test and each different type offered has purpose and value to understanding your bandwidth. Most importantly the results here are not adjusted. TMN is a neutral unbiased opinion and now with Mercury you can literally test MY net because it's can be customized to test from the sites you normally use. Every test result is processed exactly the same without bias.

I don't know how the other guys do it. I pretty much just focus on building and don't pay attention to the other tests. Sure, I look at them.. they're my competition but every time I update myself on what's out there it makes me laugh. Are they serious?! Results so far from reality it's a joke. Sometimes they'll jive but NOT when you need them to. Not when there's an actual issue. And then providers will force clients to use these inaccurate tests. Ookla themselves admits in their own wiki, "The fastest 10% and slowest 30% of your results are discarded" [related post] -- so when you feel those issues and but test at full speed, that could be part of the reason. Why anyone would use a test that removes that data is beyond comprehension. ...why > 100X more people would use it over TMN ... I don't know. I guess people don't like when someone holds a mirror up to their face and shows them they've been walking around all day with a booger hanging out of their nose.

With any test, if you remove part of the data it nullifies the result.

"Hello Mr. Bretherton. I have your EKG. You see these two lines? Okay, anything that was above this line and below that line... we're just going to ignore. Your heart may have stopped somewhere in there, not sure because we discarded that data. ... ... aaannnyways ... ...Everything checks out, have a good day!"

I don't know about you but I'd find a new Doctor.

Support the little guy and please spread the word if you like TestMy.net, this is 100% word-of-mouth.

after spending time confirming my pc:cable:router:modem were all running at 1gig
    and my lan port drivers were up to date, it occurred to me to tweek win7/64 a bit;
    https://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php
i ran this utility, set it to Optimal settings, it changed two dozen registry entries.
after a reboot i was testing within 5% of my 100/10 last mile speed.

since a lot of people are getting >50m free speed upgrades at comcast and twc,
hopefully others will find this thread and see the value of registry optimization.
it's a shame that tool developer didn't keep updating it for win8 and beyond.

I don't have any detailed knowledge about it. I too read up on it a little when I was researching gigabit Ethernet switches, where some of them supported Jumbo Frames and some didn't. I ordered one that supported it. I can't remember for sure if all my other equipment supported it though, and I can't remember if Time Warner actually uses them. Sorry I wasn't of any help.

also, the TIP graphs show the variation has gone way down. it used to be consistently 30-50%. it's now consistently less than 10%, and many of the tests are 1-3%. i wish i knew what they did to fix it.

Thanks dude, that seems to have helped… at least for the Internet speed and the odd laggy behavior.  It feels much better...

I'm still seeing degraded HDD performance however, so there must have been more than one issue going on here.

Big dip and still slower and took far longer than I would expect.  Not all seesaw like before.  It feels noticeably better but still not 100%.

I talked to her about it and she said that right after she dropped it she could tell that it was immediately slower.  I'm telling her to make sure she has backups because who knows how much longer it will last.  Soon as she's comfortable she'll be upgrading it to SSD.  I think it will last till then with only degraded performance.

So does safe mode in OSX actually realign settings or something?  The only other thing I did while it was in safe mode was remove a couple .plist files from those folders.  For adobe crap and a couple of other well know programs… nothing fishy.  Besides that I just rebooted and seems to have helped quite a bit.

Thanks for the recommendations.  You rule!

Try shutting down, then restarting in safe mode. Hold shift key down when you hear the startup chime. This cleans out some stuff.

If you can, boot from another HDD with a clean install OS and see if that makes a difference.

You can look in the main root directory Library and see if there are any odd looking files in the LaunchAgents and LaunchDaemons folder. Not the Library in the System folder, but the Library folder at the top level of the int HDD.

Ask sietec, he regularly pulls up to 900+ Mbps here. He's our speed all star around here but there are many more examples.

There are many factors that affect results here. Just keep trying to best your own speed... don't always expect to get 100% of ISP claims. Routing across the net needs work and depending on the servers and networks you connect to your results will be varied. TestMy.net tests are harder to ace too.

Having said that... TMN offers testing in many different ways. Single thread, multithread and to popular CDN services like Google PageSpeed and Cloudflare networks. To get a complete picture you need to try them all. Each test type provides different insight. Usually multithread is a good way to max out your line but that only tells part of the story. For some, multithread is slower. Really depends on the connection type and client machine.

I have something new I'd like to share with you.... but you have to wait a little longer. It puts the control of testing TOTALLY in the consumers hands. You can test from virtually any source, file type and file size on the Internet. The test looks and behaves just as you've come to expect from TestMy.net. Looks exactly the same except you can test against any almost any web server on the net. It's really easy too, input a url... that's it. I've seen up to 500 Mbps results with it so far. I'm going to open it up to allow even larger test sizes to help people with 1000+ Mbps connections pull longer tests... which allows the connection to fully ramp up and will yield higher accuracy.

I've tested hundreds of servers. From Google, Apple, Amazon, Facebook... nearly every server I've tried it on works perfectly and the results are verified by network interface readings. This update is already live and actually has been built into TMN's code for at least two years..... maybe up to 4-5 years, I really don't remember. I just forgot about it until I recently found a reference to it in the code. "Wait a minute..." --- searching for the variable I noticed turned up tons of results across my entire structure, deeply engrained into the program. It instantly worked and was highly accurate so I've build a database driven input system around it. I imagine that we can build a list of hundreds of thousands of test servers in short time. You can find the servers that work best for you and compare the results to my preferred test servers/methods.

I really want to just share it with you now. But I need to put the finishing touches on it and I'm driving through Pennsylvania heading to CT and NY. I should be able to sit back at my console and finish up on Sunday the 7th... releasing on Monday Sept 8th. Open beta available to all.

Giving you full control over where you test will give you a more realistic representation of your real speed. Using servers like Google, Amazon.. etc you can once and for all show your provider, "These are my speeds to very standard services. If you can't deliver my promised speed to these ultra powerful servers I'll find someone who will! Look, other people are able to pull faster speeds, why can't I..."

I think you guys will dig it. I hope that it helps people understand their bandwidth better and puts pressure on the ISPs to deliver what they claim... across the board not just to limited locales like is often the case today.

I aim to start revolution. But I always need your help spreading the word. Tell your friends! This site 100% relies on word-of-mouth.

I'll update this topic when it's released. Coincidently happens to be right about the time you get home.

Pgoodwin1 reacted to CA3LE in Does the test send personal data?
    Hi Paris,
Depends on what you mean.  Some people say "uses data" and are talking about their data plan or allocated bandwidth.  In that sense, yes it uses your data.  If you go to https://testmy.net/myresults below the graph you'll see the amount transfered for the displayed query.  So you could for instance enter "30" days [click update], if you have more than one page of results change the "number of results/page" below the graph.  Whatever shows on the graph is what will be calculated.  I'm attaching an example.  See, I transferred ~6GB in the last 30 days in speed tests.  One thing to consider is that tests leading up to the final result aren't calculated only the final result is.  If you're on a limited data plan I first recommend getting a client side application for monitoring data.  Manual test size selection on the download test and upload test can also help better manage low allowances.   I don't think that's what you meant... are you asking if it's transferring anything real from your computer?  In that case, absolutely not.  All of the data transferred when you test at TestMy.net is computer generated on the fly, totally random and is designed to NOT remain in any memory after the test is complete.   I hope this helps.  Happy Testing! - Damon - TestMy.net

I run 802.11 b/g/n/ac in my house.  Sometimes my laptop for instance will feel laggy on my AC network, I run a speed test and it's obvious even before the results page that something's wrong.  I switch to my N network, retest and pull my full speed.

A couple of times I've reset my router and issue resolved but the last time it was due to improper router placement.  ... I knew it would be an issue but I put it there anyways.  I wanted to see how much of an issue.

We recently rearranged our bedroom and the bed was to go on the wall where I have my modem and router.  I put them in our bedroom because it's the best placement in our home, right on a central interior wall.  After moving things around we put the router under the bed... things appeared to run fine at first but then devices connected to ac wifi weren't running right.  I went in the bedroom and pulled the bed away from the wall and didn't touch anything else.  Went back to my laptop and hit 'retest' ... immediately apparent that was the issue.

I just used 4 medium 3M strips (I love those) and stuck it to the wall about a foot above the ground.  Works better than ever.  Hidden off to the side of the bed behind a (wooden) nightstand.

My N network seemed almost totally unaffected by comparison.  So I want to give you the heads up that if you have more than one wifi network running... try switching the network.  If one runs much better than the other it might be a clue.  They run on different frequencies and can be affected by different factors.  When AC is running at < 1 Mbps and N is running at > 100 Mbps it's a pretty major clue that it's wifi interference.  Realize that it doesn't always have to affect both ranges.  ... I was also only a few feet from the router with only 1 wall between.  Most likely the cause in this case, the metal bed frame and metal in the box spring created a partial faraday cage around the router.

Here's an interesting story where TestMy.net results were used as evidence.  A Colorado man used his TestMy.net logs to prove that the statements he made on various review sites were in fact true.

He had contacted me before the news story to make sure that his results would stay in the database.  For anyone else who has this concern, I do everything in my power to make sure that nothing is deleted.  My personal logs for instance go back to the first day TMN started logging results.  There's also the option to save a CSV file (go to your results  and use the 'Export' link under the graph).

I've talked to him in txt msg right after his story aired, it was completely coincidence that this guy lives in Colorado too... and then the story happened to play on my favorite local news channel.  Small world.  Because there may or may not be a pending case I can't say any details.  But I can say this, I think it's going to work out for him.

Actually, I just looked at Russ' site just now and it says,
"** Peak Internet and I have resolved our disputes and the lawsuit has been dismissed. **"

    (awesome)

I think that Peak Internet has made a huge mistake and probably regrets the hell they put him through.  Other ISPs and businesses in general should pay attention to this story.  Customers ARE entitled to their opinion and should be allowed to share it with other potential customers... especially when they have proof to back it up.  Big props to Russell Petrick for standing up for consumer rights and getting his story out.

The 42 Mbps you got looks like what might be about the max throughput for the iPhone 5s. That's about what I get on the 5s using WiFi thru my AirPort Extreme Base Station 802.11n. The AEBS is hooked to a 100 Mbps router and then the 100 Mbps cable modem. When I'm getting about 42 on the iPhone with Wifi, my Ethernet wired connected iMac gets about 52-54 Mbps, the max of my plan.....I only get that consistently from about midnight to 8 AM. When I run the iMac with WiFi running and Ethernet disconnected, I get the same numbers as with it wired. So I think the 42 Mbps number is about max for that phone. Amazing that you can get that on a phone connection. With my AT&T LTE, I'm getting about 11 Mbps avg on the iPhone.
That's about 3-4x faster than my IPhone 4 was on AT&T. If I remember right, it usually came in at about 3 Mbps.
