Whoa Vista needs a lot of space! Running raid on hardware raid I needed to dedicate a single drive to the OS. So I have an old SCSI drive (86GB) that I implemented into my disk array and Vista is almost reeady to install. My problem..mobo needs adjustment to allow SCSI and VISTAS' gobbling of resources to run on SATA drives or PATA drives. I will work it out.

I was just reading this from InformationWeek.com:

3) You're stuck with Vista

There is no easy way to turn back the clock and return the PC now running Vista Beta 2 to the box's earlier operating system. You're stuck, sort of.

"Once you install Windows Vista Beta 2 you cannot roll back to the previous operating system installation -- you will either have to acquire and install the final released edition of Windows Vista or reinstall a previous edition of Windows," says Microsoft.

It then gives some advice all should heed: "Before installing Windows Vista Beta 2 on any computer, please remember to back up all your files."

One way to avoid a total re-install of, say, Windows XP, would be to back up the PC to an external drive using a disk imaging program such as Symantec's Norton Ghost before trying Vista. With that done, you could ditch Beta 2 by simply reimaging the PC's hard disk from the external drive.

4) You're stuck with Vista, deux

Ominous words from Microsoft: "You may not be able to upgrade your installation of Windows Vista Beta 2 to the final, commercially available edition of Windows Vista."

Naturally, you'll need the final version of Vista -- what, you thought Microsoft was giving this away? -- but you may also have to do what's called a "clean" install. In other words, the installation of the final Vista may be possible only by wiping out all that's on the hard drive of the PC.

Note the "may" in the caution. We suggest you take that to mean "will."

Its really going to be that hard to bring XP back if say I don't like it or say I don't want to purchase the final version after this beta expires?

That's why you should install Vista on a separate partition/hard drive. If you don't like it, you'll always have the option to format. :)

Autorun does not work when installing on Windows Vista from DVD.

Workaround: Insert the Start DVD. The DVD begins the installation.

Close the Autorun Installation window. Navigate to the DVD drive

that contains the Start DVD (for example, E:). Right-click and

then select Run as Administrator.

Built-in administrator account is disabled in Windows Vista Beta 2.

Built-in administrator account is disabled by default in

Windows Vista Beta 2. To enable administrator access, you must

explicitly enable the Built-in Administrator account.

Workaround: After Windows is installed, use the

net command to enable administrator access:

net user administrator /active:yes

& & & & &

Use the Local Users and Groups MMC console

to change the properties

of the account.

1. Open the MMC console.

2. Select "Local Users and Groups".

3. Right-click the administrator account, and then select Properties.

  The Administrator Properties window appears.

4. In the General tab, clear the "Account is Disabled" option.

Note: If you are upgrading from Windows XP, and if the Built-in

Administrator account is the only active local administrator account,

the Built-in Administrator account remains enabled and in

Admin Approval Mode.

# Installation limitations

There are two installation scenarios for Windows Vista Beta 2 (and RC1):

  1. You can do a clean installation. This process will overwrite any data that you have on your hard disk or on your installation partition. The overwritten data will be lost and unrecoverable.

  2. You can upgrade an existing installation of Windows XP.

No other installation scenarios are supported. Upgrading to this beta from any other edition of Windows requires a clean installation, as described in option 1. In addition, once you install Windows Vista Beta 2 (or RC1) you cannot roll back to the previous operating system installation
