oistz Posted August 17, 2006 CID Share Posted August 17, 2006 Hello I've been reading a lot of forums here for 2 years already; however, this is my first time to register and post a question. Well my internet seems to get good speeds at night ranging from 900-1.3 Mbps, but usually it keeps on changing speeds whenever i test it. I've been testing my bandwidth with a lot of sites namely speakeasy.net, 2wire.com including my favorite testmy.net however their speeds always vary. Usually during the day I get a slow speed. My question is could anyone help me tweak my pc so that I could get a better speed. My advertised speed is 512Kbps, but as I said it reaches up to 1Mbps because my isp isn't capped. These are my specs OS: Windows XP Professional ISP: Mydestiny internet (Philippines)--- cable Router: Linksys Befs41 v1 Here's my speed results: ::::::::::.. I called my provider and they said I had good signals, but i doubt it because a few months a go I've been getting speeds of 1Mbps during the whole day. dlewis23 Posted August 17, 2006 CID Share Posted August 17, 2006 welcome to the forum oistz. you can try tweaking your connection, use tcp optmazer to start. you can get it here http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-11975 , move the slider to 512kbps, check "optimal settings: check "PPPoE" and make sure the network adapter is the correct one, apply and restart. also try a little bit bigger test file clear your cache before you do teh test. http://www.testmy.net/tools/test/d_load.php?&st=st&tt=1&ta=1&top=000&out_src=3MB
oistz Posted August 17, 2006 Author CID Share Posted August 17, 2006 Thanks for posting dlewis23, uhm what does PPPoE do? and won't my speed be limited to 512 kbps when I move the slider to this speed in tcp optimizer? I tried testing my speed again tonight and just as I expected it was faster compared to this afternoon speed results: :::.. dlewis23 Posted August 17, 2006 CID Share Posted August 17, 2006 ostz, since its cable its shared so at nice more people are using the internet so it gets slowed down, there is really no way to stop taht from happning. I said to do the slider at 512kbps because because that is what your adverstised speed is, but you can do it at a higher # i would try 1mbps and go from there,
tommie gorman Posted August 17, 2006 CID Share Posted August 17, 2006 Remember, before you tweak always clean. To make sure the computer is clean. daman4469 Posted August 18, 2006 CID Share Posted August 18, 2006 PPPoE stands for Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet....it simply means you are, using a dedicated connection to another Ethernet network beyond your router.. As with any Ethernet network (especially cable internet using PPPoE), bandwidth and resources are shared. As traffic increases, bandwidth decreases, and vice-versa...hence your faster speeds at night...small increases are possible, but on a PPPoE connection, what you get at night (as far as bandwidth is concerned) is about the best you will get. oistz Posted August 19, 2006 Author CID Share Posted August 19, 2006 What is RWIN cause TPC analyzer gave me these results RWIN seems to be set to a very small number. If you're on a broadband connection, consider using a larger value. For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS. Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS: 511104 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8 ) 255552 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4) 127776 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2) 63888 (MSS x 44) Will changing these values make my connection faster? if yes how do I change them? should I use cablenut? cholla Posted August 19, 2006 CID Share Posted August 19, 2006 oistz ;Welcome to the forum .It sounds like you have been a guest for a while now.I'm suprised you haven't read more about RWIN here. You need to get CableNut.This will let you make RWIN settings easily.Probably to start with there is a analyzer that will give you the settings to use. Your RWIN is too small for your connection. Some people prefer TCP Optimizer instead of CableNut some like both. I will go into this again though the TCPIP Analyzer at speedguide is good to check the RWIN in XP.It's suggestions for the RWIN value it detects are incorrect. It detects the DefaultReceiveWindow this is based on AFD parameters not MSS value in XP. If you decide to get CableNut I or someone will look up the link for the online analyzer.Testmy also has some .ccs files for CableNut by VanBuren if you know your connection & there is the correct file for it. oistz Posted August 20, 2006 Author CID Share Posted August 20, 2006 Thanks for your advice cholla. I already got cablenut, but I don't know what settings to put. Last time I remember, I used this calculator from http://www.j79zlr.com/cablenutXP2k.php ,but I think it didn't help so could you, VanBuren or anyone help me make a personal setting for cablenut? thanks in advance

I also did the same when I tested my speed on the desktop.

ktest Posted October 23, 2006 CID Share Posted October 23, 2006 I have the same ISP and I had the tech come over and check why SNR is below 30dB. Signal never is somewhere 26-29dB but never reaches 30dB. I read that signal should be at least 30. Could this be our problem? --------------------- Downstream Value Frequency 729000000 Hz Signal To Noise Ratio 26.8 dB Power Level -4.7 dBmV The Downstream Power Level reading is a snapshot taken at the time this page was requested.
