longhornguy09 Posted May 19, 2005 CID Share Posted May 19, 2005 Hey yall I have absolutely horrible upstream speeds of only 600Kbps and 2Mbps down and im using roadrunner and they say they dont "Guarantee" upstream speeds so I was wondering if there is a way I can get past this. I have been reading the posts and I keep seeing referances to "tweaking" and Ill read on it more but can I do whatever that is and improve my upstream data? Thanks for yalls help. longhornguy09 :::.. Your other post indicates that you should be getting 350k U/L....and 2M D/L.... your test shows 372k U/L...and 5M D/L.....I fail to see the problem... Both are above your caps.... Aggr3 Posted May 20, 2005 CID Share Posted May 20, 2005 Well then help me understand here, my upload stats say my connection is 372 Kbps and speed is 45 kb/s. Why dont I get 372 speeds when im running a server and my friend tells me my speed is in the 45 range whats the difference in the two? Well unfortunately ...all ISP's advertise their speeds in Kbps....Kilo BITS per second.... kb/s...or KBs....refers to Kilo BYTES per second.. It takes 8 bits...to make a BYTE most internet sites are running 8 bit words...unless it's a 16 bit secure site...or 32 bit encrypted... Does this help explain it any.. dlewis23 Posted May 20, 2005 CID Share Posted May 20, 2005 longhornguy09 to put it simple the 372kbps is what your connected at the 45kb/s is the max speed that you can upload at. Yes its a stupid way of doing it i agree, and the ISP's need to start advertising true speeds instead of connected at speeds.

FallowEarth Posted May 21, 2005 CID Share Posted May 21, 2005 It takes 8 bits...to make a BYTE Just to expand a bit (no pun intended): A bit is a 1 or a 0. A byte is 8 bits. K = kilo = 1000x, M = mega = 1,000,000x ...metric prefixes....
