ojo80 Posted July 22, 2005 CID Share Posted July 22, 2005 Hello all, I was wondering if you guys could tell me your opinion on which is the best antivirus and the best firewall? Also, on my current firewall, there was a port scan attempt, does any one know what that means?
FallowEarth Posted July 22, 2005 CID Share Posted July 22, 2005 Hello all, I was wondering if you guys could tell me your opinion on which is the best antivirus and the best firewall? Also, on my current firewall, there was a port scan attempt, does any one know what that means? It means somebody was targetting you, usually. ppl scan your ports to see which ones you have open so that they may probe and possibly attack you if you are vulnerable. If you have a firewall, they'll usually pass you by, so i wouldn't worry too much. port scanning is bad news though, if you get it anymore, i would contact your ISP to let them know. I don't think it's legal, or at least it is frowned upon. Have you made any enemies on the Internet?? lol. The general consensus seems to be: good free firewalls: ZoneAlarm, Sygate, Outpost good free antivirus: AVG, avast Each serves the same purpose though, its boils down to preference. ojo80 Posted July 22, 2005 Author CID Share Posted July 22, 2005 no enemy's online, my firewall blocked the port so there was no problem. I currently have Panda Titanium antivirus, got it when i got my computer from the shop, they gave it to me for free, seems pretty good, has the firewall in it. Just incase, I wanted to change it in the future, have you guys heard of that antivirus.

organ_shifter Posted July 23, 2005 CID Share Posted July 23, 2005 Hello all, I was wondering if you guys could tell me your opinion on which is the best antivirus and the best firewall? Also, on my current firewall, there was a port scan attempt, does any one know what that means? If you are looking for a free solution, always remember that you get what you pay for (in this case, what you don't pay for). If you want hardcore protection that blows all contenders away, I recommend Kaspersky Internet Security 2006. It offers the best protection against viruses, leads the field in detection, and has a feature rich firewall built right in. It's also very easy on the resources. Dark_Matter Posted July 23, 2005 CID Share Posted July 23, 2005 For Windows I'd say ZoneAlarm Pro for the firewall, and Norton Anti Virus. Norton in my opinion does not do alot of things well, but they do have steller AV IMO. As for your port scan you shouldn't always be alarmed sometimes if you are on certain websites that require certain ports to be open for a transaction or service to be fullfilled the server may port scan you to see if you are good to go so to speak. I'm not saying to ignore it , but get familiar with all the ports, and services that go with those ports so you can judge when it's an intrusion attempt, and when it's not. The intergrated firewall works great. That's the one I was talking about.

pitbull481 Posted July 24, 2005 CID Share Posted July 24, 2005 The intergrated firewall works great. That's the one I was talking about. EDIT: Running two different programs (one for anti-virus, one for firewall) has to be resource heavy. Even if both programs are light on the system, together they become a hog. ok thank again. had to download the KIS. i had the KAV which didnt have firewall. pitbull481 Posted July 24, 2005 CID Share Posted July 24, 2005 How much is Kaspersky Internet Security 2006 gonna be (not beta)?
organ_shifter Posted July 24, 2005 CID Share Posted July 24, 2005 How much is Kaspersky Internet Security 2006 gonna be (not beta)? Around $50.00. That's what I'm guessing. Kaspersky Personal Security Suite costs $49.95, and it contains anti-virus & anti-hacker (firewall). Two different programs that install together. KIS2006 is built on different technology and includes far more protection features in one neat package. It may cost more, or they might release a KIS2006/KAV2006 Professional Edition which would be more for sure.

VampireXxX Posted July 25, 2005 CID Share Posted July 25, 2005 I never use Kapersky before but when i d/l the beta version, i like it. Unlike McAfee and NAV that take a lot of resource, it doesn't. Thanks for the info organ_shifter
MttFrog13 Posted July 25, 2005 CID Share Posted July 25, 2005 I see what yall think are the best free ones, but what are the best ones to pay for, i wouldn't feel safe unless i am gonna pay somebody something.
MttFrog13 Posted July 25, 2005 CID Share Posted July 25, 2005 I vote for Sygate and NAV. Wouldn't recommend McAfee though...messed up my puter :angry5: Yeah i tried mcaffee one time, it came with a free trial, and it froze my co,mp up, and slowed it down so much to the point where i couldnt use it so i had to uninstal it. VampireXxX Posted July 25, 2005 CID Share Posted July 25, 2005 I pay my Sygate & NAV and i satisfied with both of them. Usually before i register, i try them first.I'm thinking to switch my NAV to Kapersky if they release the full version.
monsnet2k8 Posted July 25, 2005 CID Share Posted July 25, 2005 I uninstalled NIS along with NORTON SYSTEM WORKS without any trouble and all of it is nowhere to be found on my compuer..... I installed Kaspersky AV and personal firewall and let me just say that when i believed that i had a virus clean computer with NAV guess again i didn't.....
