compuworm Posted September 12, 2005 CID Share Posted September 12, 2005 OK, you are exactly where I was. Inconsistent downloads speed tests and no reason why. Your Cable Modem setting are right-on. This is a software and/or reg problem. I found an item in my programs that was trying to make a connection with a sever and this was affecting my download rates. My download status bar on testmy.net would normally hang around 18% then hang again at 45% and this cave inconsistent download speed rates as is happening to you. 1. Did you look over the Error logs in the Event Viewer? This definitely told me I had a program misbehaving. Once this program was eliminated, cleaned the Reg, and rebooted I never again had a problem with hanging download tests on Testmy.net. 2.The suspect program was attempting to make contact repeatedly with a sever and this was the source of my problems. My ISP is comcast and I am suppose to get 4000kbps down and 384 up but if you look at my download test results I get nearly 7000 down and 372 up which is damn good. 3. So long story short this is a software issue look again for some program you might not be aware of that might be trying to connect to a remote sever while you are online. You might not be getting any error logs because the program is not committing any.
Dittoz Posted September 12, 2005 Author CID Share Posted September 12, 2005 I looked again. Still can't find anything that might be doing what you're describing. I'll keep looking, but I'm hoping its a problem with the cable lines. After all, the comcast tech said the problem was before it even gets to my modem. compuworm Posted September 12, 2005 CID Share Posted September 12, 2005 I assumed based on your earlier posts comcast has already replaced your cable line? They did replace mine but I still had the download hangs.
Dittoz Posted September 12, 2005 Author CID Share Posted September 12, 2005 Nope she said they were coming out on Tuesday to do that. I'm hoping that's the problem. I'm just ready to start getting what I've been paying for.
compuworm Posted September 12, 2005 CID Share Posted September 12, 2005 Well, are you still having the download test hangs around 18 % or otherwise? How many times does this happen or does it happen with every test? Damn I forgot something, are u using a router? Went back and see u dont use a router. Did you uninstall the NIC drivers and reboot.
