peepnklown Posted September 26, 2005 CID Share Posted September 26, 2005 (MS) HT enables multithreaded software to execute threads in parallel on a single CPU. Basically, it should boost performance to a wide range of applications (gaming, special effects applications, video editing, and digital media in general and scientific). MttFrog13 Posted September 26, 2005 Author CID Share Posted September 26, 2005 I think i've decided on this: Intel Pentium4 HT 3GHz Intel Graphics Media 900 512MB or 1GB of RAM 80GB HD DVD Burner 17" Flat Panel LCD I can either get 1GB of RAM with the regular ontel 3GHz processor, or the intel HT 3GHz processor with only 512MB of RAM, which one is better? I can get this for about $1,000 (my mom is putting in $700) but I might take a month or 2 till I buy it when I'm done moving to Norfolk and get a paycheck or two. I already got a job at $8.50/hour which is a sh*tload for a 15 year old with no bills (cant wait to buy the xbox 360).

resopalrabotnick Posted September 26, 2005 CID Share Posted September 26, 2005 you will want the gig of ram. look over all the vendors special offers before buying (dell gateway hp and the locals ads, as well as maybe tiger newegg etc. some are bound to have a good special, and you will want a bundle deal because you decided to buy your software. ghostmaster Posted September 26, 2005 CID Share Posted September 26, 2005 If your going to buy a new computer, dont buy one with a 500 series Pentium 4. (unless its the special version with EMT64) You'll need the 64 bit extensions in the future. I recommend a 630 P4 or better, but for what its worth, I recommend something with an athlon 64 and at least 1 Gig of ram. 512 will get you by for now, but you have to think about the future and 512 isnt gonna get you by with Vista. For what its worth, Sams club has really good deals online, and they have a very good warranty. Even covers power surges. removed link.. session expired.. cak46 Posted September 27, 2005 CID Share Posted September 27, 2005 You can check to see if the software you will be running is hyperthreading or not. The software programs have to be written to take advantage of this technology. Check with the vendors of your software. As far as cpu and memory, more is better but if you select a lesser processor, buy a machine which will take the faster processor and allow you to upgrade with more memory as well if you find down the road that you need more processing speed and memory space. Can you take the word off your old machine and install it on the new one you want to buy? If you are in school, you can get a student edition of MSword (office) for pretty cheap. Eligibility: http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/prodinfo/students/doyouqualify.mspx Pricing: http://www.microsoft.com/office/word/howtobuy/default.mspx You could also buy an older version, say 2002 for much less: http://www.nextag.com/microsoft-office-2002/search-html About half way down the list is word 2002 only. Check out ebay for deals on Office as well. This is a site I use for where I work and this article seems to say the cost is going down sharply in the near future on Office XP suite for students: http://www.techsoup.org/news/news_article.cfm?newsid=760&cg=searchterms&sg=student%20AND%20version

MttFrog13 Posted October 2, 2005 Author CID Share Posted October 2, 2005 I'm running programs like The Sims 2, Sim City 4, Photoshop CS2, and i will be using Microsoft Word and Powerpoint. Are these hyperthreading, and should I even get HT if I'm only using these programs and browsers like FF, and AOL. Should i get HT anyway since maybe, in the future, most programs will utilize HT?
