Hey I'm looking for the cheapest hosting companies within the united states.
Preferably on the eastern coast, for low ping times, just wondering if y'all knew of one.

you should determine what type of usage your going to do with your webhost. what i mean is that, you should know what you type of OS you wnat your server running like linux or windows. if you will only use it for storage, then i think it won't matter.

you should also check out the hostgator.com i have been using it and so far they are cheap and have one of the best customer support. you can reach them via email, phone or live chat.

All the advice given you here has been excellent.  Once you determine exactly what you need I would also suggest you checkout

http://5dollarhosting.com/  I have purchased a Reseller account and I can tell for my needs they fit like a glove and they're very reasonably priced.  If all you need is a place for 1 site $5 a month - no kidding and it'll run great. The SimplePlan® has all the things you'd expect - but a price you wouldn't!
(This is a copy/paste from their main page)
 500MB disk storage
 25 GB monthly bandwidth
 Unlimited email addresses & forwarders
 2 WebMail programs
 FREE Web site builder tool!
 MailScanner enhanced mail protection
 MySQL, PHP, Ruby on Rails
 cPanel enhanced interface
 24/7 support - always
 10-year history of quality
 Excellent Reseller program available
 Still just $5/month!*
Double the resources + Fantastico! scripts for just $9/month*!

* When purchased as an annual package

I do use Google Apps for email / groupware  Google Apps - ROCKS!!!!

Hope this helps,
