  1. I recently switched from AVG to Avast. I like both. Avast has detected and removed even spyware, at the same time as Microsoft Anti-Spyware. Avast has a wide range of on-demand detection for numerous applications. The only drawback I found so-far is that I have to initiate a full system scan manually where as AVG automatically ran at 8 AM every morning.
  2. Great! And you got another 100k or so on upstream, I can only wish for that speed. And thank VanBuren for the speed-boost.
  3. The speed tests all match up quite well. I would give the upload some time before getting too concerned about not hitting your 2mbps cap. I found VanBuren's Verizon Fios DHCP 5000 - 2000 cable nut file, it can't hurt to try that one. It is attached below. Let us know if it helps.
  4. Just tried it and got these results: TCP/Web100 Network Diagnostic Tool v5.3.3d click START to begin Checking for Middleboxes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Done running 10s outbound test (client to server) . . . . . 1.02Mb/s running 10s inbound test (server to client) . . . . . . 4.09Mb/s Your PC is connected to a Cable/DSL modem Let me find a different NDT server to try. edit: try this link for alternate servers: http://e2epi.internet2.edu/ndt/ndt-server-list.html it seems the ones at the BOTTOM work, the top ones time out......
  5. Very nice, especially upload is on fire. Try a Speak Easy test and also try this NDT test. Just curious.
  6. I can't say for sure, duffman, but I would venture to guess that the video will be allotted dedicated bandwidth separate from your internet connection, although on the same line. So my best guess is No, I don't believe it will have an affect on internet speeds.
  7. I was pulling these stats out of my head. We run approx 8-10 (on average) standard definition video channels on one 6MHz (actually 5.36057) 256 QAM channel. Some channels can be compressed more than others, but 38mbps / 10 = ~3.8 mbps on average per single video stream. Now we can carry 2 high def channels per 256 QAM carrier (feasibly at this time) so that = 38 mbps / 2 = ~16 mbps per video stream. You got me on my bad math on the high def part. Thats how we get 250 channels (and nothing on) on a 110 channel system. Keep in mind that the majority of most cablecos spectrum is still analog (1 video stream per 6MHZ channel).
  8. I have never installed my own fans either. Looking at the specs, the first one's noise level is 21dB and the second 20dB, both in quiet mode. The quiet mode means lower RPM/air flow, but adding 2 fans will have to help. They both look good to me. Let us know the results of your cooling upgrade when complete. Good luck.
  9. Welcome to the forum, Amdkillsintel. Don't listen to these guys, they mean well. Just aim for the future and pray for broadband. And, btw, I am sorry.
  10. As I look back, I see you said that you are getting Bell TV soon (I should have opened my eyes). I am not sure of the advantages of VDSL vs ADSL, etc. I believe it offers higher speeds, but at shorter distances. Need the speed for video. A standard digital cable video stream is around 3-4 mbps. High definition is just under 10mbps, I believe. So to get a consistent quality picture thru the phone line, you need a higher data rate.
  11. Sure looks like an IPTV set-up to me. Well, a quick Google search and I see the answer to my own question: http://www.microsoft.com/tv/content/press/BellCanadaPR.mspx How do you like it so far? Any problems?
  12. Is Bell offering IPTV? I didn't think anyone got that off the ground yet.
  13. BTW, use IE to open that site. I had the same issue until I tried IE. Firefox just comes up blank like nothing is there....
  14. Suse Linux Live CD ran with no problems on my first try. This has a pretty nice GUI. Not sure if I would use this version so much, I used the Fedora Core 2 a while back to run an FTP server. The server side helped me learn the command line interface, permissions, etc. If I am only going to browse, etc., I will stick with Windows. But, something different to experiment with.
  15. At 100%, my processor is at approx 117
  16. Thanks, php. Looks like the fix is updating to SP2. I will try updating in safe made tomorrow, getting a little late now. If I start it, I know I'll be up until 3AM and regret it at work tomorrow.
  17. Still working on it (between entertaining my 2 year old). Here is a snapshot of the blue death screen, in case it helps: (sorry, it is a photo of the monitor, little blurry)
  18. Thanks,Organ_Shifter, that stopped the screen o' death long enough to get the info. Now I need to figure out what the H it means. 0x0000008E (then dozens more in parenthesis) edit: looks like a memory problem; I ran MSofts memory test the other day, and it passed repeatedly, hmm. I will troubleshoot memory modules later. I may try a whole different single stick. I'll report back; Thanks.
  19. Thanks for the advice and info everyone. I am going to give these tips a shot a little bit later after the kid is in bed. I am alone with my 2 yr old, and obviously he won't let me sit at the computer for more than 3 minutes.
  20. Glad to see it helped. If you're near your cap, I would just leave it as is.
  21. Hey everyone- By brother brought me his problem PC to look at. Windows XP (notsure if SP2, can't get there yet) It is AMD Athlon 950MHz - 256MB RAM. When I fire it up, everything loads up fine, it will sit for a couple of minutes, then there's a quick blue death screen flash and it shuts down. The other odd part, once it comes up, if I try to open anything, that instantly kills it. The blue screen is much too quick to read. It will run in safe mode, and I have ran multiple AV's and spyware scanners in safe mode, only 1 scumware prog found and fixed. The hard drive chugs along pretty good after boot before the blue screen. One more note, I ran the MicroSoft memory test (bootable disk downloaded from them) and that passed. My main question, does WinXP log the blue screens o' death? If so, where do I find that, maybe it will shed some light. Any ideas will be appreciated. edit: It is running SP 1, I'm sure I won't be able to update without it dying on me.
  22. Welcome to the Forum Are you running any tweaks? I am one of the few that does not gain from tweaking my PC. When I try tweaking, the same thing happens to me, and I have tried many different settings. If this is the case, try uninstalling the tweaks, and rebooting. If you're NOT running any tweaks, follow this thread and try it: http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-2097.0 Run the 'Tracert and Ping Program' in line #4 and post the results back here. Good luck-

  24. I don't understand why we aren't fighting harder for the production of alternative fuels with the petroleum based fuel prices being out of control. (not to mention pollution) If the US would legalize hemp, we could mass produce a large quantity of our own clean bio-fuels. Read the article below. If I was heating my home with fuel oil, I would most certainly consider this system. Any thoughts out there? http://www.theomahachannel.com/news/4873083/detail.html Link to system web site: http://www.azurebiodiesel.com/ Looks pretty simple
