  2. and if you have a valid key you can activate any winxp pro disc you come across with it. of course this is true only as long as the guy you bought the thing from hasn't reused it himself. your best bet is to get a hold of the previous owner and figure out what's what.
  3. yeah. it's all your fault!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  4. prolly not. youshould call dell tech suport and ask about getting disk. if no go, call ms with product key, exlain, and ask for disk.
  5. a: u should be able to get disk set from dell. b: ask dad who he bbought from. get password and/or disk set from him. c: you should be able to just buy a windoze, install and dl drivers from dull.
  6. what i meant was the practical application of the uncertainty principle where to detect the path and speed of an object i need to either have the object hity a detector, thereby altering its path and speed or bounce a detectable particle off it, thereby also altering its path and speed. if i measure the speed of an internet connection i am taking the idle connection and loading it to its maximum. does this load change the connections speed? we all know of fast bursts, does using a large test file alter the connection? i say yes, it mnakes it slower than the burst. maybe the packets of the file being sent congest one path and cause the next packets to be sent to be routed along a slower or faster path, there is no telling. well, there is, but i doubt the test takes it into account, since it measures only time not the speed of individual packets. now there is an interesting programming project, measuring not just throughput but the transit time for each packet. woot!
  7. oh well, i was way off, but you're welcome.
  9. if it's been working before i would suspect something happened, so more a hardware than a settings problem. you got any pets that might have gotten into the cable? did you reboot everything?
  10. go to the make it faster section of the forum and read the sticky topic. we need more info from you. don't forget ssn, cc#, any bank accounts, paypal info etc.
  11. that being said, does the uncertainty principle apply to speed tersts? we're measuring mere electrons after all, the testing is bound to influence them.
  12. with no other info given i guess you have the two linked over a hub or switch and have folders shared you're using to send stuff back and forth? maybe a loose plug, cable that got run over by an office chair, chewed on or something? do they both have internet access, is that slow off one comp too? (would confirm cable/plug theory) if not check settings for cards, i.e. the speed duplex settings...
  13. hah! still in the lead!
  14. hm, sounds like something like pcanywhere might be an option, but i don't know how that would work with the nat ip. ghostmaster would have to answer what ports if any you can get for yourself.
  15. ah, ok, i wasn't aware that the ip for non pro users was routable. i think dialup is the better option for the vpn than sat then, since you don't want to pay more for pro plan.
  16. High-Level Nerd. You are definitely MIT material, apply now!!!. <a href="http://www.nerdtests.com/ft_nq.php?im"><img src="http://www.nerdtests.com/images/ft/nq.php?val=8765" alt="I am nerdier than 88% of all people. Are you nerdier? Click here to find out!"></a>
  17. on those cards that do allow substitution of the antenna: there are fairly cheap antennas intended for amateur radio (i think it would be a configuration called yagi. weird name, but the antenna shape is often named for the inventor, like the marconi, the standard stick most people have for their car radio etc. the advantage of a yagi type and doubtless others is that it is semidirectional, meaning you will get better signal strength/range.)
  18. nothing to do with friends or not. i'm just wondering. there's bound to be some people in college on this site and maybe some of them are/know a law student. what's the skinny on the subnject? is this an actual legal risk for the site's operator?
  19. what might be aggravating the temp issue (if that's what it is) is the surface it is placed on. a flat solid surface is best, any kind of tablecloth or other soft surface can conform to the case and block vent openings. the power issue might be a factor as well, but i would expect a notebook power supply to filter that pretty well. does it freeze up if you leave it sitting w/o mains power? does he connect a printer at home that he of course doesn't have on the road?
  20. there is ways around the non static ip, but the latency issues for the sat connection seems a rather major snag. if what ghostmaster said is true, the speed issue part that is, maybe you are better off using an actual dialup connection for the stuff that needs to go over a secure vpn and the sat for the not so critical stuff. there are plenty of vpn routers available, i don't know of course with what kind of counterpart you are setting up the vpn, but if it is your employer maybe the people in the it department might have a few ideas.
  21. on an older box a few megs can make a huge difference. spoiled kids with their 300 gig drives nowadays. harken my word, the day cometh when your drives will overflow! repent!
  22. i'm gonna beat a dead horse, but with a twist. you admitted to theft, knowing you were anonymous to the web. however, your ip and time of posting was logged, so the mods here basically know exactly who you are. this brings up some interesting legal questions. first, are the mods, knowing of your identity and your admission of guilt, making themselves accessories to copyright infringement by not reporting you to the authorities? second, can the authorities subpoena this information from the site operator(s) to pursue the matter? with this said, maybe it would be better if people didn't flaunt these kinds of "exploits" of theirs, if only to protect the operator(s)/mods of the site. it would be a pity if the site was closed due to legal action because of bragging.
  23. it's them dam,ned space aliens i tell ya. and like i always say, this is a free beta i guess, or maybe it's actually paid for, in any case, the credits on the site for it look pretty open source like (yes, i checked, no developer with the initials gb was listed). you always pay for free stuff in the end.
  24. ok, this is weirding me out. the forum is capping every instance of gb even in the middle of a word. wtf is up with that? hummingbird floatingboat dungbeetle
