  1. disable it. turn off the comp, stick a pen in it, and turn it back on. the motor should fry after several minutes of nonrotation and you can then remove the pen. no more noise. if however, you're going to nitpick and say that that will lead to the untimely demise of your ps due to eventual overheating, i can't actually deny that. if the prospect of releasing the magical blue smoke from your box bothers you, you can either replace the whole ps or, if you feel you are capable of some mechanical work, open up the ps, yank the old fan, replace it with an appropriate model and keep what you have. if you open up the ps, make sure that you have it unplugged, are grounded with a resistor in series to avoid a cross the body shock should a discharging capacitor zap you and use insulated electrician type tools. if you can't protect yourself that way, just shell out the 40 bucks for a decent replacement power supply or replace the whole case for one of those blinking/flashy/lasercut gamer boxes.
  2. what kills me is that he finally gets tyhe t1 he's been dreaming of and gets owned by his isp. then, instead of getting on the horn and getting it fixed (which at 510 a month he is entitled to, i'd say) he just whines about it. then again it could also be a problem with the siemens gateway from his other thread, that that isn't configured properly for his router or vice versa.
  3. ok. sketch out what devices will be connected how. if i understand correctly you want to plug the gateway into the router. if it is a router with a wireless component, why would you do that? use the wireless part of the router. if you want to set up the gateway as a bridge between the wireless part of the router and itself to create a wired lan segment away from the router, you need to configure the router to use its wireless and then the gateway to act as the other net segments bridge to the wireless router. however you say you are using the wireless adaptrer for the xbox, that sounds like you need the router with active wireless and then run configure the xbox adapter to log onto the routers wireless. but if none of that matches your intentions, please list what is connecting to what how. meaning modem-router-wireless-gateway-rest of net or whatever you want.
  4. static ip's are irrelevant. describe from what to what device you want to set up the link. www.siemens.com. should be a manpage there.
  5. easy. go to the manufacturers websites and look at the data sheets for all the components. they should list the power consumption. don't forget when shopping for an adequate power supply that for example a 400 watt ps can't supply 400 watts on the 12v side. the number given is always a total of all the voltages combined.
  6. bah. humbug. but it is my sons first real christmas. sigh. maybe buy a grinch costume and tell him it's halloween?
  7. from the quick look i took at the xbox site your friend might be able to connect to you if you can't connect to him.
  8. well, any plugging of ps/2 devices (wether in the correct port or not) should be avoided at all costs when running the comp. it doesn't have to, but it can do harm. from just frying the port to worse symptoms. as for ram being loose, yes, even if you haven't touched it. fixed a neighbors comp a while ago that would not start at times. turns out one of his ram sticks had ever so slightly uinseated itself, it was barely noticable when i reseated them, and that was causing the error. best bet is to take the ram sticks out and reinstall them. take the normal precautions for esd.

  10. hm, he hasn't replied in a while. seems he's busy playing.
  11. pull power from modem and router, if installed, then power down pc, reboot. power up modem, router, retest. if still slow, read the 2 links in my sig and post all requested info.
  12. shut off any port filtering functions on the modem? edit. don't know if you can turn off the router part of the modem to make it assign only one external ip, making it essentially a dumb modem, not the modem/router combo it now is?
  13. try putting your xbox in your modems dmz.
  14. like i posted, my capped speeds are significantly higher than advertised, that's why i'm asking, to see if more people have that.
  15. you need to look at the configuration page of the modem. depends on manufacturer, passwords to see it may differ from isp to isp.
  16. clarification, i meant not just what your speeds are but what the modem is set to deliver by the isp. i guess there is enough capacity on the lines here atm that they are leaving it set higher than advertised, which is nice especially on the ul.
  17. 3/256 cap is 4.4/480 i usually test around 3.2/440 dling from ms i get faster down.

  19. some providers cap your modem at faster than advertised speed. read the 2 links in my sig and post all info, some tweaking might give you a gain. but don't count on it.
  20. i am guessing that the wireless router has multiple ethrnet ports and will suffice for both your wired access and the wireless access needs. if that is the case, you need only replace the dlink with the netgear in your current setup, the includsed setup guide (probably available online on their site if needed) should provide a concise list of simple steps to get it up and running. if you so choose you can probably configure the netgear to act not like a router but merely as a wireless access point. this should also be explained in the documentation. in that case you would jack the netgear into one of the lan ports of the dlink and it would act only as a link to the wireless devices. imo that can only lead to problems, as having the dlink routing for the netgear is not neccessary. (you see i am too lazy to look up the manuals myself. if you're reakky stuck, holler. if not me i'm sure someone ele here has that exact router and will be able to walk you through easiily.)
  21. what do a thanksgiving dinner and sex have in common? you start with some breast, get some thigh, and then it's time for the stuffing!
  22. you take a look at your bill, figure out how much they are docking you for surfing the web. then you go to their website and compare that amount to their offers and see if there is a match. tyhe speed that that offer claims to reach is your advertised speed.
