well, there you go. if there is no cap on the line, you might try cablenut. not sure what settings to use, but experioment around with it, you might be able to get even more out of the line.

and there we have the answer. it appears that the 2400+ is a burst at the beginning of the download, with the speed declining towards the 800 after a time, averaging out to a value that matches your test result. now, that news server you're dling from, would that happen to be run by your isp? in that case it would explain why you run into the speedwall for external connections but unthrottled for connections inside your isp's network. (transferring data costs the isp money, so if you dl from external sites they have to pay. so they might not be capping the modem, but the connection...) but that's all just guesstimation. call their tech support and find out exactly what the deal is. either way it looks like some tweaking is in order for your connection, since you don't even reach the 8 down.

honestly, i can see why people like wearing kilts. they're manly as all heck, and you get to carry a purse for all the stuff you want to lug around, only you call it a sporran. i would consider a man-purse, but i just haven't seen any practical designs that are big enough to seem useful. i miss my military uniform. all those big pockets to keep stuff in.

the puerto rico telephone company also runs a dsl plan at 64k. just for the sheer hell of it i called tech support and asked them if that wasn't the same speed as isdn, and why in hell do they use the dsl equipment to go at dsl speeds? the reply was a question. 'what's isdn?' <sigh>

no, he's not talking about kB, i think he means kbps. it sounds like he has his filters incorrectly set up in the house, and needs to get in touch with his isp/telco as to how he needs to set up dsl filters, explain to them how the lines are etc. if needed bring in a tech to figure it out. the problem with residential phone hookups is that inside the house you get the most screwed up rigs (wiring layout wise) that can make it difficult to figure out where to place the dsl filters. if he doesn't have dsl i misread his post completely and you can happily disregard all of the above. have a nice day.

the n90 looks about the size of a brick, is probably heavy too. (don't feel like looking up the stats again) and the reviews about it say that it has comparatively good cam features. compared to other cam phones. that's like saying saddam isn't such a bad guy, compared to hitler and osama. the hiss and noise noticable in the 3rd pic (and i'm pointing out that because there is a lot of area in that pic that is /not/ screen) is of course slightly more noticable due to the fact that you have a very dark object you're taking a pic of. but on a normal pic in daylight it will still be there, just not as noticable because the actual subject of the pic is more prominent. that is why in every serious test of digicams one should always snap a pic in darkness or near darkness, just to see how 'noisy' the sensor is. and i still say for 400 bucks you could have gotten a decent cellphone and a decent cam. not some hybrid that does both but neither really well.

i would also go with intel on the dual core, if you can make use of the dual core's advantages. but i would not go with the pentium d, i would go with the hyperthreading enabled dual core extreme edition. (which under ideal circumstances will run like a 4 processor system, even better for multitasking. but, if you just want raw power on a single thread for gaming or somesuch, then one of the cheaper amds is probably a good choice. it's not dependant on the brand, it's really dependant on what you wanna do with it. think cars. if you need something to cart the kids around, go suv or minivan, if you just want to go fast go sportscar. you'll end up spending more or less the same but get totally different capabilities.

especially if you have encryption like wpa running. on my mn-700 the activation of wpa drops the speed to below that required to call itself Wi-Fi. i lose about half my connections speed wireless compared to when it's docked. but at least it's a more secure connection than that wep crap.
