the number, 10 or 100, is the speed. 10mbps and 100mbps respectively. duplex, half and full, is the way the devices communicate on the link. hald duplex means it's like a cb radio. push to talk, no talking while listening, no listening while talking. full duplex is both devices on the link being able to listen while talking.

Dsl service with no local phone service?
resopalrabotnick replied to richcornucopia's topic in General Discussion
usually you will need to have phone service to get dsl. just the basic local package will do. the reason is that the dsl is modulated onto the phone line and most telcos aren't flexible enough to allow use of their line for dsl without a real phone hooked up. but it never hurts to call your local telco ad ask what their policy is. edit and having a backup landline for 911 or when vonage don't work, hsi is down is not a bad idea either. that way you can have a backup dialup as well. -
My connection is obscenely slow and erratic. Please help.

you can look in the control panel at his network properties to get the ip. also contact the isp to get access to the router so you can try channelhopping. -
you have a dns entry for your domain in the public dns's. it points to godaddy's page. youi need to change the entry to your ip. contact godaddy to have them do it/allow you to do it.
-
then you need to look at your hosters site and see how you configure a domain you got from them to point to a specific ip. then you set up your webserver at that ip.

Can't stop Windows messenger from starting please help!
resopalrabotnick replied to alitalia's topic in General Help
hm, windows messenger appears in ie in the tools/manage add-ons. you might be able to disable it there. -
first of all do you want to see the domain from insiode your net or do you want to have anyone from the web looking up your domain to be pointed to your comp instead of the godaddy blurb?
-

a bit is a one or a zero, while a byte is an eight bit block. one bit can have the value 1 or 0, one byte can have the values 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, .., 253, 254, 255. the speedtest is in kilobits, it is also displayed in kilobytes underneath. i'm sure your bandwidthmonitor displays it in kilobytes. and since one byte is eight bits you multiply the bytes by eight. (or divide to go the other way. the notation is kb for kilobits and kB for kilobytes. the kilo sounds like the metric multiplier of 1000, but it is in fact 1024, since we are dealing with binary values. just don't even ask, that's just the way it is. a mega is not 1000 * 1000 but rather 1024 * 1024. giga is the same times 1024. tera again. and so forth. (sneakily your hd manufacturer will advertise with gigabytes in multiples of 1000 while formatting it of course gives it multiples of 1024. hence it looks to be smaller than advertised.) so, basically, you are slightly over your cap.
