  1. ok. shut off all modems, routers pcs and anything else. check all cables for proper pluggedinedness. then power everything back up. read the 2 links in my sig. give us the info.
  2. i don't know. or do you steal from your neighbores wireless?
  3. what i find intersting is how the speeds with adelphia, especially the upload, are so much higher than the advertised speed.
  4. you should call the local cops and ask for the number of the local field office, or go through the operator.
  5. i agree with you 100% you put together high end kit, which is the only way to save money compared to oem.
  6. [me=resopalrabotnick]chuckles[/me] sorry, too used to interpreting the english language here. i thought you meant along the lines of has chosen cable as provider. how much you pay for that? my adelphia is 55.95. the uptime is better than the dsl i used to have, but often the link goes dead when there's rain, causing one of the many power outages nearby and cutting off a part of the link... plus all the traffic goes through the miami office, which causes infrequent slowdowns, i guess the routing up there gets overloaded.
  7. like i said, if you want something with non-mainstream (meaning newest graphics cards, for example) building is probably not a bad idea, if you shop around to get the bundles of parts and maybe wait a few weeks to get a rebate on a certain part. but if all you want is an allround box that runs and brings licenses for the os and maybe some other stuff, then you can't beat for example dells packages. take their configs and put them together at newegg or tiger, add the software and see. 400 or so (depending on current offer) for a celeron with a monitor and winxp home and maybe an ms works? even the winxp alone will cost you 80 to 100.
  8. 320/128? is that cable or some crappy assed prtc dsl?
  9. be worried. very worried. first of all, take a look out the windows. do you see any black helicopters? or is that traffic spotter patrol plane/helicopter circling the block a little too obviously? now look out into the street. is there a delivery van, like a florist or carpet dealer type thing parked there? with noone approaching/leaving it for some time? is there an inordinate number of plain looking cars traveling down your street? does the bum across the street (if any) seem to glance at your place more than any other between sips from the bottle? has the gang that hangs out at the corner changed? pick up your phone. is there sometimes a slight delay between picking it up and the dial tone starting? call someone. NOT ANYONE YOU KNOW! don't want to drag your friends into this. call two pizza places at random, then one of the telco's service numbers. if you notice a slight delay (that is just a bit longer than usual) between the last number being dialed and the line ringing, it may be tapped. try sending a fax to see if the line quality is good or if it is degraded. that's another telltale. if you want to be sure, go out in your car, and when you see a cop, run a red light. if you don't want to risk that much of a ticket, speed. if the cop doesn't pull you over it means he knows that 'they' are following you and has orders not to interfere with their investigation. then again, if they think they have enough on you, a routine traffic stop like that is the perfect excuse to bring you in. the only good news is that they probably won't bring in a swat or other special ops team on your place. that would just attract too much attention. if you do have to go out, try to stay in public places, don't give them an opportunity to bag you without witnesses. be wary of traffic, because if they need to create an incident to whisk you away in an ambulance just having a car hit you will be easy to arrange. then they will have pletny of time to send a team in to take your place apart and collect any evidence. don't bother inquiring at your isp or telco, the 'national security letters' that are used to force them to open records to them also include lifelong gag orders. for your sake i hope there was really no illegal or stolen material on your comp and that you haven't been purchasing things that could be combined to build a device. the good news is that i may be overreacting a bit, and that it was merely a hacker that spoofed their ip, but then they might think you have something to do with said hacker. just wait and see is basically all you can do. pay attention to your surroundings and don't trust anybody. ANYBODY. least of all some forum troll yanking your crank.
  10. it's a beefed up flashlight. something similar that dazzles you with bright green light and pretty much causes you to shut down temporarily due to sensory overload has been around for years and it's not as big and heavy. this sounds longer range and wider effect though. and sorry, fanboys, nothing at all to do with the star trek raygun of choice.
  11. gringo from pr, could work out my spanish, but everyone here (in pr) is an american, so why bother. (astounding to me is the number of non english speaking americans, but that's another subject for the will acknoledging being part of the us automatically erase all my cultural heritage discussion. maybe the other americans with their own cultural heritage could help out here) anyhow, got adelphia, advertised as you probably know 3/256, my modem is capped at 4400/480. and i pretty much get 440 up 3.2 down here, faster down from ms and the like.
  12. well, it's faster'n dialup ainit? and they promised to fix it by dec. 22nd. did the mention what year? call them, tell them how you feel, better yet, don't tell them how you feel, tell them how disappointed you are about the speeds, cry 'em a river. maybe you will get a nice x-mas present in form of a credit
  13. if he had cable he wouldn't have the trouble. he's on wb, bouncing his packets off the moon.
  14. nah, for that it is like i described earlier. but it sounds like there is something fishy with your wireless. look up the ip of your landlords comp on his system or the routers setup page and see if you can ping it when your internet link goes down. if you can, you know the wireless part is ok and there's something borked in the router (that also being your modem however i doubt that it has a problem since the landlord can still surf during your downtimes) so i would expect something with interference on the wireless.
  15. speed/1 pc = 1mb with just one pc running. if more than one pc is using net then of course they share. read the links in my sig for tweakage.
  16. if i want special kit in it i build, if i want a cheap box w/ all the software etc. i buy. those bundles are unbeatable compared to selfbuilding.
  17. try using the toys. both. there might be a settng in them to make you happy or change the setting you're looking for.
  18. thats what i tried to explain to him. 4 wires inside for the bus, yeah. but just 2 outside, the whole point being isdn on pots infrastructure. like dsl. which they offer w/o additional wires.
  19. frag. missed the os. durr. ok, you need to rightclick your network neighborhood icon, activate the file sharig, reboot, and then you can rightclick and share folders.
  20. changing the channel would have to be done on the modem. it sounds like a modem/router/wireless access point. btw, does the building have central a/c? (ducting makes great way to lay cable) to share, right click on a folder, select sharing and seurity. that will let you run a wizard to set it up.
