the countries governments are expected to buy them, just as (iirc) the governor of MA was looking into buying one for each of the states students. as to the question, do they need a laptop to learn with, it depends. if there will be digital versions of textbooks available for them at no cost, then it is indeed a good investment. let's say the life expectancy of the thing is 4 years. take a textbook at 10 dollars. each year, an average student needs what, 8 or 9 textbooks? that means the laptop can reduce the cost of learning materials by 75 percent over its lifetime. not bad at all.

just wait. they are re-evaluating. that means the next version will scan the disk for hashes from p2p networks and delete the files that sony bmg has rights to. it will collect the ip's of comps connected to your comp that are dl'ing these files from you. they will come after you and them. thieves beware! edit: and it will turn any comps it comes in contact with into a botnet to ddos p2p nets and sites.

well, just blocking the icmp traffic usually means that there is no reply to the ping or other command, thereby leaving it uncertain wether or not the address exists. in this case it is blocking but at the same time giving info that it exists, it just doesn't want you cluttering it.

ok, all things aside, has anyone considered the fact that these 100 buck laptops are going to be a major financilal problem for the poor countries? they have to blow what little hard currency they have to pay it to some us companies for a laptop that looks like something that got rejected from the my first sony design contest. great. just bloody great.

hm. the ip you are pinging is behind a router and the router is blocking your icmp commands, but telling you it's doing so unlike a home router that will not reply at all because it's trying to hide it, this one is just set to keep clutter off the net behind it.

as for the bandwidth question, there is a speed test on the vonage site. if i try to run that from PR, it doesn't run at all or gives me a result in the low double digit kbps range. does anyone that has vonage know if that thing is hosted on the same servers/network as the voip service, or is it sitting at some 3rd party hoster? if it is hosted on the same net, it tells me that there is no freaking way i could use it.

hm. try dl'ing cablenut, and use one of van burens settings for it, select which one by comparing the list with your advertised speed.

a slightly illegal form of tweaking is getting an appointment with the manager of your local cable provider and getting his balls in a vicegrip. then you tweak them until he gives you higher speeds. however, if he doesn't have a sense of humor he might try pressing charges against you for assault or so.
