HO-LY--COW! Finally... geeze man, where have you been? I'm sorry to hear about the divorce. I understand, people get busy... lots of the original members of this site still visit frequently but have too many things going on to post here as often as they once did. Some have started and finished college then gone on to work in their respective fields. So many brilliant minds... I couldn't expect that they'd answer questions on my site for their whole lives. ... Uh, yeah.. between all your Cablenut guides and related articles you posted... you have to have at least a million reads on your topics. The only topics more popular here that I know about are Off Topic threads. Glad to see you're still visiting. I hope that you decide to participate again, you have ALLOT of fans out there ya know. - Damon

Welcome to the site. I personally have the SB 6120... and am very happy with it. Motorola has always made great cable modems. Although, so does Linksys. I've had Linkage modems and routers that given me many years of trouble free operation. Having said that, knowing how good the Motorola is by first hand experience, if I were you the choice would be clear. Just look at my speeds with cox, https://testmy.net/stats/?&t=u&d=05162011&x=60&m=2&l=10&q=CA3LE with that modem. Relize that any inconsistancy in my speed can be explained by the fact that I run this site and run the tests here under extraordinary circumstances during development. If I were testing normally all my scores would be 50+ / 5+ ... if anyone knows how to benchmark and severly overload things win data... it's me. The Motorola Surfboard 6120 has stood up perfectly to all that I've thrown at it.

I just calculated the total amount of time that the world has spent on TestMy.net. These numbers are based on Google Analytics data... Last month over 2 YEARS of time was collectively spent here. Total amount of time spent on the site that I have on record is 107 YEARS. The analytics data covers less than half of the sites history so one could safely assume that our visitors have spent over 200 YEARS of time here. Couple centuries of speed tests

Wow, I didn't realize that Stanford was getting GPU's in the mix... cool. Maybe I should start folding again... The Mac client doesn't look like it has all that extra stuff however. Very minimal options. I also think that most people won't know what to do on Mac once it's installed. There is no dialog after the install. Just for reference for any Mac users who might read this, because this is installed as a service access to the options for Folding@Home on Mac can be found under System Preferences... not Applications. I guess I'll have to get off the computer one of these days to see how it works

One thing you have to also realize is that your in Arizona. The problems started more or less when it started to heat up, right? The problem with Arizona is something that hardly anyone even knows about. As you know, things expand when they are heated up. This is also true for Coax. As the coax expands it becomes longer... cable providers have to compensate for this with higher signal levels. No where is this more true than in Phoenix, AZ. Especially if your home is fed by an Arial cable... arial feeds are far more susceptible because they're not only out in the open but have gravity pulling on them as well. If that expansion is calculated over a long enough distance it equates to -dBmV. When I worked for them we saw a huge increase in service calls in the Summer and the preceding couple of months. ALSO, this is a Solar Maximum year... which can and will disrupt communications. Another phenomenon that many people don't realize. I was a tech during the last solar Max and the techs I worked with were reminiscing about when they last had problems with the Sun and communications 11 years earlier. When it does play a roll and when it does there isn't anything communications companies can do. I'm not at all saying that your problem is caused by the Solar Cycle... BUT it could be a couple of things they even Cox hasn't realized. ... Think HEAT... So, thinking "heat"... where is the D-Mark (demarcation point is where the cable is fed to your home and split off)... does it happen to be on the side of your home that has direct sunlight? It could be over heating during the hot part of the day the splitter causing it to drop signal. This can also explain why Cox may not see an issue if they get there in the morning or evening. Just a couple of ideas form my experience. To tell you the truth though, it could be a ton of things. Even if you don't have arial cables it could still go back to that... just because your house isn't fed by an Arial doesn't mean that your main feed stays underground... 100Ft down the street it could turn into an arial feed. That modem is bad ass by the way. If a tech comes into your house and talks crap about the Motorola SB6120 eXtreme... kick them out of your house. He probably has a Terayon or something. ..then call Cox and tell them you want a real tech... and SPECIFICALLY ASK FOR A COX TECH... tell them, "I don't want a contractor, this is your last chance to get this right." - Cox has in house techs that have WAY more knowledge of the system and WAY more expensive tools... one meter that I had was worth $16,000 ~ there is NO cable sub-contractor willing to spend $16K on a meter. But that will allow the Cox tech to really inspect your drop. --- You'll know if it's a Cox tech because they'll be driving a real Cox truck and will be wearing a real Cox shirt... you obviously need a higher level of support. I hope that Cox has already been sending real techs to your house... If not, that's another thing to think of. Damn, this was a long post... sorry. I just know how much trouble you've been having and want to help. - CA3LE

Why Do My Results Differ From Speedtest.net / Ookla Speed Tests?
CA3LE replied to CA3LE's topic in General Discussion
Thanks, Yeah, who cares about what your line is capable of. Don't people already know that when they order their service. I didn't originally build this site to be used by anyone except myself... it was part of my 'toolbox'. A way for me to ensure that when I left a customers house they were getting what they paid for. ... I wouldn't build or use a tool didn't serve it's purpose. (that goes for any tool) I'm not a cable installer anymore but I'm my own biggest user of the service. Many of the features the site now has came from my own need for that service. My point is... this site is a tool, not a novelty. I'm happy and humbled that so many people have chosen my site over the years. Thanks to all the TMN supporters. - Damon -
Steps, Sequence, and Router settings - Apple Airport
CA3LE replied to mvbmac's topic in General Discussion
Welcome to the site! First, the order that you reboot those items really doesn't matter. However, it will get back online fastest if you turn everything off... turn the router on first, then the modem. This way the cable modem can get the Mac address off the router quicker to then register with your ISP. When when it really comes down to it, it will eventually come online no matter the order. Just a little quicker in that order. I have no experience with the Apple Airport Extreme settings. BUT, if you post me screenshots I can offer up advice on what settings I would enable. In case you don't already know how to take a quick screenshot in OSX, this is a way to take snapshots of small sections of your display... Hold Apple+[shift]+4 -- crosshairs will come up, drag and select what you want a snapshot of. After release of the mouse your image will be saved to your desktop. -
What exactly does the failure message say? Can you copy and paste the text. Because I'm able to run a SmarTest myself just fine.... so I need the error number to see why you'd be getting an error. Thanks for your support. - Damon

Why Do My Results Differ From Speedtest.net / Ookla Speed Tests?
CA3LE replied to CA3LE's topic in General Discussion
Good point... but you failed to factor in that I run this site and I'm purposely trying to break things as I develop. That score is no doubt inaccurate... but it was scored that way durring trials... most likely that score wasn't even logged by the public site that you all see Here's what I scored on a combined test a few seconds ago... on the public end ... I also have scores that are only a few kB/s in the database --- never trust my scores out of the database, unless I post a single score... It's part of my development process. And for comparison here's what I just got on a test moments later at speedtest.net, closest server. (15 minutes later) And my server is like 1400 miles away from me. -

Very nice testimonial... your charts clearly display where the problem happened. Looks to me like... about April 13th... Funny thing is, your upload sped up at the same time your download decreased. https://testmy.net/stats/?&t=u&x=60&l=250&q=tdawnaz -

Why Do My Results Differ From Speedtest.net / Ookla Speed Tests?

Thanks for the testimonial -
The most common question that people ask us is why their results here differ from speedtest.net. I want to explain something that may help you understand why this is. According to the Ookla Wiki [updated link] the following is true about your tests taken at speedtest.net... The fastest 10% and slowest 30% of your results are DISCARDED The remaining data is averaged together to determine the final result Throwing away the fastest 10% and slowest 30% of the results in my opinion does not make for an accurate test. Isn't THAT the data that you're here to see? Also note this isn't only true for speedtest.net. Ookla is huge, most of the speed tests online run their software. Source: wiki.ookla.com Multithreading makes your connection look better Ookla speed tests are also multithreaded. Meaning that they open more than one connection to the host and combine the speeds. This often can mask congestion issues. For instance, imagine that you have a pipe along your route that's limiting you to 10 Mbps. If you open more than one connection through that pipe you'll be able to achieve a faster speed... but testing that way will not clue you in that there is actually a problem along the route. Remember, you shouldn't have to multithread your connection to pull your full speed. Multithreaded speed tests, like the majority out there, are designed to benefit the Internet provider not the consumer. They often display your maximum throughput not your throughput over the course of an entire upload or download. Omitting the worst portion of your test resulting in inflated scores that may make you feel warm and fuzzy but aren't going to help you see and resolve connection issues. Multithreading can show that you're able to max out your connection by combining the speed of concurrent connections but a great connection can max out without having to multithread. So, if you have to multithread your connection to get your full speed, you should be asking why that is. With TestMy.net it's instantly apparent if there is a congested route. Your speed here reflects the actual loading time of data within your browser... not the combined efforts of multiple threads being altered (dropping the top 10% and bottom 30% of the results) and added together, all through a plugin that isn't suited for the task. :: EDIT :: If you'd like to multithread with TMN, I offer that as well. Try the multithread speed test. TMN's multithread test gives you the option to select from an array of servers. Allowing you to test across multiple routes, to more than one server at a time. TestMy.net is the only Internet speed test with this ability. So THAT'S why your results differ. -- TestMy.net is a harder test to ace and a lot less forgiving than other speed tests. But isn't that what a benchmark should be? :: EDIT :: Another thing to consider is if you're running windows, particularly if it's older than Windows 7 you may need to tune your TCP stack to see your full speeds. Windows doesn't always come out of the box optimized for fast connections. Flash based speed tests fail to detect this problem. To make this change for free I recommend TCP Optimizer. This makes changing those settings very easy and nearly fool proof. Just open it, slide the bar over to your speed that you're supposed to have, check "modify all adapters" ...apply the settings and reboot. You should have faster speeds after your re-test if that was the problem. Here's an outside source talking about exactly this issue, I'll hunt down more examples. >> Download Speed Test - Something fishy? A few related topics :: Accuracy.. Personally, I think I'm going to wait for when they have Bluray burners --- I fell in love with the display on the 27" ... I will get one, I just want to wait for the next MAJOR release.

I've been building like crazy and I wanted to let everyone in on a few new things... First, download tests will have a much different feel. I have added an extra technique to the test. I've found that by adding this step to the process results are not only much more consistant, the tests also require less data to achieve accurate results. Just don't be alarmed if it feels different than you may be used to. Second, the results page... updated to display percentages. Some extra funny results quotes have also been added. (I feel like that's a tradition at this point, lol) Third, holy cow... major fix. I have remapped the score database, you should no longer see any queries that take longer than a second or two at the most.... most queries are instant. This was a major fix in a design flaw that only became apparent when the database became super large. Fourth, the Scheduled test is now called the Auto or Automatic Test and updates have been made over there as well. I've been running it for days and have been getting great data out of it. Many more things I haven't mentioned but that's good for now. n'joy! - CA3LE

I noticed today that Apple released new iMac's. Most interestingly they now come with a Thunderbolt port. You can read about this new technology on Apple's site, Thunderbolt. Wow, Dual Channel 10Gbps! Apple introduced us to USB and Firewire... I'm sure that this will become a standard in time. The new iMac also has Solid State hard drive options which is nice... but it's a $500 upgrade, and get this... if you want the 1GB SATA drive that they were going to install for free AND the SSD it's $100 more. I'm sure that's justified with an install of parts that make the iMac capable of running two internal drives... Personally I would buy it stock and swap it myself and save the money... Boy, it must be pretty nice to just be lazy and get a new iMac with 3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, 16GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM, 2TB Serial ATA Drive + 256GB Solid State Drive, AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5 all preinstalled... $3,649.00 later... turn the power button on and it's so fast that it takes you to the future!
