    Hello

    Thanks opusten! Welcome to TestMy.net
  2. Sorry you haven't got a response on this yet. I personally haven't had a problem like that but maybe if you provide a little bit more details about the crash I can help. Are you on a laptop? You could possibly have something in the room that's interfering. I personally have little drop zones in my house... mostly because of the amount of various electronics I have. But some areas, within a two foot radius will drop my speeds by 40Mbps, move over a little and BAM, full speed. So that's something to look into. Good luck, and if you find the culprit please post your solution so that any future visitors may find help. -CA3LE
  3. Your ISP is most likely saying that your speed is 256 Kbps, Kbps not kB/s. You're getting 216 Kbps which is pretty good considering the distance between you and the server. And when you're getting 35 kB/s you're actually getting more than your advertised speed (about 280 Kbps, see the speed conversion tool). ISPs usually sell their plans based on line speeds in Kbps, Mbps or Gbps. Not by file transfer speeds of kB/s MB/s and GB/s. Both are listed in the results here because different people have different terms that are familiar to them... I try to accomodate all types of users. merged double post
  4. Yeah, companies always get away with stuff in the fine print. The best we can really do is try to educate people on their practices and recommend ISPs with better practices. I just hope that the information here has and will continue to help make the internet a better (faster) place.
  5. Well, are you experiencing slow downloads to most servers? If yes, I would raise a stink. Maybe run a scheduled test and see what times you're slowing down. These problems are usually associated with peak traffic hours. After you've tested you can give your stats link to Shaw. We don't have that problem here. Firstly, I'm a linux guy myself. Secondly, I program with compatibility on the forefront of my mind. I try and make sure that my users don't require anything special to run the tests here. Any OS with the vanilla browser will work properly here. Another thing that this site does is show the difference between browsers (other speed tests don't seem to notice). Third... I extensively test my programs in literally EVERY browser. There are a couple of known browser issues... the PS3 browser (piece of crap) simply doesn't work and Opera (another PoS) doesn't perform well, I personally can only pull 20Mbps out of it on my 50Mbps line (Mac Version). The methods that are employed here enable this test to benchmark browsers as well as your internet. Short comings of browsers like opera become very apparent when you test here. Over the years I've seen the balance of power shift from IE to Firefox to Chrome back to Firefox... etc. Depends on the build really. If you run tests back to back using different browsers you'll see what I mean. No problem, that's what we're here for. Please tell your friends about the site. This is 100% word of mouth. - Damon Another good example. Thanks Nick -D
  6. Definitely a great example. Thanks tdawn
  7. The test method here is completely different. Some factors that may slow down your performance when testing here (that aren't always detected by other speed tests) include... Incorrect MTU and/or Rwin settings and slow hard drive performance. Another factor that effects all speedtests is the route to the server. If there is congestion along the route then you'll see slower speeds than you might expect. We run our dedicated servers through one of the most powerful and well peered providers in the country... so if there is congestion the clients host is usually to blame (Shaw in this example). Speedtest.net's servers are usually so close to you that route is rarely a factor... but I personally believe that people are only lying to themselves when they test off such close servers. It defeats the purpose of this type of test.... do you want to know what your speed is to your neighbors house or do you want to know what your speed is to a normal, more realistic location. If you have a minute read this. Pay attention to the final paragraph. You're only as fast as the weakest link between you and the test server. I have done everything on my end to ensure the best possible testing environment now it's really up to the ISP's to get their customers routed through better providers and bigger, more adequate pipelines along the way. Speedtest.net isn't wrong by the way... I just think that they test people under unrealistic circumstances. 10. that's a pretty nice download.... here's my last.
  11. I can do that... I also need to add the go to bottom shortcut at the top that tdawnaz was asking for.

    Hi

    Sure is - Welcome back.
  13. I do have my server tuned but I'm always open if you know of a better way. I'll hit ya up in PM.
  14. First, thank you and welcome to the site. Unfortunately I was unaware of that problem for a while. But yes, I've fixed that. And yes, we've been on gigabit for about 6 to 8 months now. Much better
  15. Thanks... that modem is definitely doing the job.
  16. Here's my setup And here's my network setup... I mounted on the wall like that because I kept getting bad wireless reception... works great mounted like that though.
  17. I'm going to be buying a 27" iMac instead... My resolutions now are 1920x1200 and 1920x1080 ... the resolution on the 27" mac displays is something that people have to see in person it fully understand. 2560x1440 is 3.69 million pixels... my 27 inch is 2.07 million pixels and my 25 inch is 2.3 million pixels. 78% and 60% more pixels respectively, in the same amount of space. I got a 120GB Patriot Inferno 285 MB/s -- you can raid them like normal drives but dude, one of these will out perform raid0 raptors... raiding them is over kill. Unless your compiling mad amounts of video. I actually got a different Patriot drive 128GB one that performed very well but died on me. Patriot had a VERY smooth and friendly RMA process and they ended giving me a superior drive over the original... so yeah, I can recommend Patriot for sure. This new drive hasn't given me any issues, runs at 128 degrees and smokes everything I throw at it. ... and yeah, I could hear the old hard drive. My computer's on my desk. It was quiet but I wanted silent. ... but even if SSD's sounded like a kazoo I still would probably favor them for the speed.... alright, maybe not if they sounded like a kazoo, that would be pretty annoying.
  18. yeah, that's odd. You usually expect it to be the other way around. Higher download, lower upload.
  19. I've been putting ghost armor on my devices for a while now. But a couple of days ago I wanted to get my phone redone. Bestbuy no longer partners with Ghost Armor so I had to find them in the mall. But they honored my replacement warrantee and they told me about their new matte finish. $5 more but I'm glad I did it, you could barely tell anything was on the phone before. Now it's nearly impossible to see the armor. By the way, this phone is like 6 months old and I've dropped it from 3-4 feet about 10 times. Not a scratch and it's still running like it's brand new. The guy who reinstalled my armor told me that they're coming out with a carbon fiber finish soon, sounds cool.
  20. I too favor silence over performance... I'd rather that I can't hear it and it run a little hotter. Another reason why I love SSD, FINALLY I don't have to hear the damn hard drive... although, it can make it hard to tell if the computer is doing it's job or not...... then, because of the speed of SSD 1ms later I know that it's doing it's job. ... Seriously, if you guys don't already have Solid State drives do yourself a favor and get one. It's the most drastic upgrade you can do for your computer. My computer cold boots in 10-15 seconds. ... Photoshop CS5 loads in >2 seconds and most other programs load in >1 second. And I didn't even tell you guys the funny part.... (haha) my main computer is just a Mac Mini 2.53GHz with 4GB ram and everything is instant! GET SOLID STATE! --- I'll post some pics of my setup later on, it's pretty crazy. It's just a mac mini but I have 25" and 27" monitors... and I still don't have enough desktop space for the stuff I do -- My network setup looks pretty crazy too, I have everything mounted on the wall in plain view, it trips people out.
  21. I converted your attachment to jpg by the way, don't trip out and think that my server has a mind of it's own. Nice temp under load... That's not cheating, that's genius! Damn dude, you've been folding@home and top ranked on our folding team for years. Thanks man, who knows, maybe YOUR computer will find the cure for cancer.
  22. Well, testing from singapore will lower your results for sure. Our server is in Texas. Over that distance there are a number of factors that come into play. The distance itself is a hit because it takes longer to get from point A to point B. ... But the results that you see are an accurate representation of the speeds that you get to the US. If most of the websites that you visit are based in the US there is a way to speed up your connection by tweaking some settings... MTU and RWIN. Try tweaking your setting with SpeedGuide's TCP Optimizer. Download the most recent version (3.0.6) >> TCPOptimizer-3-0-6.zip You can also try the Vanburen Cablenut Tweak... It's an older tweak but I've heard allot of good feedback on that. Basically you need to optimize your connection for long distance... You could probably max your connection out on servers near you... though that doesn't really tell you much if most of the sites you visit are outside of Singapore. I hate to refer people to my competition but you can try speedtest.net if you want to check your connection on a server closer to you. Years ago I used to offer donated mirrors here but I did away with them because there was no way for me to control the quality of the service on them. I'm currently working on a better world-wide testing solution.... probably still about 1000+ programming hours before version 1 of that's completed though..... too bad I only have ten fingers.... maybe I could learn to type with my toes at the same time, now that's an idea! - CA3LE
  23. Very nice, you know your cooling scheme is doing the job right when your idling near room temperature . Cases look like they have nice ventilation too. And that radiator is SICK, next PC I build will definitely have one of those... the way you have that set up I'm sure that the benefit of that isn't just for the CPU, I'm sure it drops your whole under the hood temp, huh? I don't know dude, you had a pretty sweet setup last I heard. ... Haven't used that one yet. I usually rock speedfan on my windows machines. I'll have to check that out some time.
  24. Well, I assume that it's a 100Mbps switch right? Why do you need the switch? Is it because your router only has 4 ethernet ports? That shouldn't slow you down by much. Although transfer from computer to computer within your home network will be 10X slower than if you have a Gigabit switch. ... For troubleshooting purposes First I'd recommend hooking the cable modem directly to your best computer... bypass the router and switch and see what speeds you get. If you get better speeds then work the problem out by adding things one at a time... Second, add the router.... If you see your speeds drop after that then you know that it's either a misconfiguration of your router (in which case reset the router to factory specs) OR it could be as simple as a bad ethernet cable, either going from the modem to the router or the router to the computer Now, add the switch... If your speeds are comprable to what you were seeing with a direct connection to the modem then add the switch... if your speeds drop after that then it could be a bad ethernet cable from your router to the switch or just a plain old bad switch. Basically eliminate the variables... then add them back one at a time. That usually uncovers the culprit. Good Luck... When you find a solution please update this thread so that future visitors may find the help that they need. A 100Mbps switch should't drop your connection to 10% -- but personally I would upgrade to a Gigabit switch, or at least run 3 computers off the Gigabit router, hook the switch to the 4th plug and run the remaining two off the 100Mbps switch... maybe to the computers (or roommates ) that you don't care about that much. - CA3LE ... where are you located by the way?
