  1. just thought my stats may help ? Line Attenuation downstream 45 up 31 db Noise Margin down 15 db up 23 db con.rate down 2656 kbps con.rate up 448 kbps I am 3 miles off the exchange/Hub ( congested ) this should give me 2.6-3.3 Mbps , I get around 2Mbps, dropping to 1.7Mbps at peak times and loose about 10%-15% running a TMN speed test ,
  2. probably , but they ain't far behind most other UK providers, the UK has the slowest ADSL broad band in Europe , some good info here . http://www.dslzoneuk.net/ ,
  3. Hi MikeSel^ and welcome , Now that is a difficult one, as Talk Talk will fall back onto the small print " Broadband up to 8Meg " the word UP being the operative word !!!! but indeed you have poor speed there , the UK average for up to 8Meg is around 2.5 -3.5 Mb, there are many factors involved in getting reasonable speeds , Exchange , line length , line condition, filters, in house extension sockets , etc. who were you with b4 ? and were they faster ? the only way out of The contract seems to be to make a pest of youself , till they are glad to see you go , don't move on to Pipex , was good once but now owned by Tiscali and speeds dropping fast for me , best I get is 1800 Kbps, and never saw more than 2400Kbps at best on my UP to 8 meg ADSL give Justinlay's good advice a try first , BTW I use TCP Optimizer , easy enough to use and makes a back up of previous settings, Regards Roco ...UK
  4. FTTC BT is thinking on it ,but don't hold you breath , and fiber.O) is right , a stable 3mb , I wish even 2Mb would be good ,
  5. :2funny:He believed the plan allowed him to use the phone to connect with his computer, using it as a modem to download a lot of data, high-definition movies and other bandwidth-hungry applications., I guess he didn't read the small print , I think he got of lightly . so what does he want with his apeal ? all for free?
  6. Nah, I am frightend that the print wont be clear unless I hit the keys good and hard BTW, 7 years on , since I declared computers will never catch on , I still type
  7. My Logitech mouse lasts about a month , but I use rechargable AA 2,300Ma X2, and like Tommie I wore the letters of the the matching keyboard , I peck at it like a drunken woodpecker with a hang over
  8. Have a look on here http://www.theeldergeek.com/paging_file.htm it makes sense to me , page 2 is especially interesting ? I have 2 hard drives , and page file is on the second , I also keep my "C" small with a partition of 20Gb, the other side of the partion (60GB ) is for storage the second hard drive is also partitioned , again for storage ,Copies of important stuff , ( really important stuff also gets on a second computer that doesn't go on line ,) and onto DVD disk , I page file onto the final partion , along with my ASR backups and my drivers store , A reg.hack that is supposed to speed things up is , " DisablePagingExecutive " set it to "1", , and to change back set "0" the default , It made very little difference on my computer , and the usual disclaimer applies BTW I run Xp pro , and it does page file even with 1Gb of DDR, never seen one that doesn't just my thoughts ,
  9. Downtime ?? , well the only thing in Pipex's defence , never had downtime in 2 years , and that would bother me more than low speed , still another month or so to make up my mind on that , thanks Just for your imput ,
  10. thanks Fiber O on that , all the line wiring from the pole is new , internal I did myself , computeris hard wired in without wire 3 the ring line , my speeds are dropping since Tiscali took over Pipex , especialy at peak times , I have followed all the guides over on DSLzone UK , but I had found them all by trial and error way back in time , yes , Be is talking 4-5 Mbps , the down side is I am about 3 miles from the exchange ,which ain't helping any , still if I get 4 Mb with Be , I will be happy enough , so longs at it keeps going I shall wait till after Christmas , b4 changing , I am looking at their light user package adsl 8, as adsl+2 would be wasted on my line lenght ,
  11. OK , all I can get from the modem card is noise margin UP +22.0dB DOWN 15.1 dB attenuation UP +31.0 dB Down +45.9 dB I am sync, at 3 Mbps , your test on Be looks good , are they in london ? , they are talking about 4-5 Mbps for my line , and that would be OK for me ,
  12. Hi Fiber O , I am using a PCI card dsl modem , I will come back shortly on that ,
  13. nice speed Fiber O , I just installed sky adsl for a friend , only the 2Mb service , but it runs well , and came free with her Telly vicious contract , and their help line was good , LOL her phone line went through the company switchboard , , yeah I did ask b4 she started did she have her own phone line , after the second router arrived I figured out the problem , I shall be of to "Be There" in January , as the speed ain't that inportant , but I have a download cap with Pipex (2Gb a month ) and I am getting close to that some months ...........
  14. British broadband "among slowest in Europe" 10:31AM, Monday 1st October 2007 The UK has one of the slowest average broadband speeds in Europe, according to a new report. The study shows that Britain has an average connection speed of 2.6Mb/sec, placing it below countries such as Slovakia, Hungary, Poland and Holland. In fact the UK comes in a miserable ninth in the table of 16 European countries studied by the Information Technology Innovation Foundation (ITIF). Finland came out top in the ITIF study, with an average connection speed of 21.7Mb/sec - over eight times the UK's average speed. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- my test results at 18.18 GMT :::.. testmy.net test results ..::: Download Connection is:: 483 Kbps about 0.48 Mbps (tested with 579 kB) Download Speed is:: 59 kB/s Upload Connection is:: 188 Kbps about 0.2 Mbps (tested with 386 kB) Upload Speed is:: 23 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net (Main) Test Time:: 2007/11/29 - 11:03am D-Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-765ZQVNTA U-Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-YQ1UPS5CA User Agent:: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; Maxthon) [!] ------------------------------------------------------------ DSL.zone UK test , 29 Nov 2007, 18:05 Pipex 8128.plan 1913 Kbps down ----------------------------------------------------------- both test taken just mins.apart , I have been getting slow speeds across the pond for some time now ,
  15. Well , a year on , and I am still stuck on 1.9Mbps down 320 Kbps up , , the UK average has now risen to 4Mbps down , I am still with my ISP Pip ex , on the 8Mb plan Pip ex has been taken over by Tiscali , and my speeds are dropping down to 1.4 Mbps , so in the new year I will be moving on , the only reason I have stayed is for my e-mail address as I use it for business ,I get a lot of work that way , lol where has the year and one month gone ? I guess time goes quick when your having fun , and TMN forum has been fun for me , thanks for that Guys , I have been here nearly 2 years , some G/F's haven't lasted that Long Regards all Roco ....UK
  16. Whaaa.? dont get em anything , you are looking at a life time debt there (yeah I am single again ) the upside is I don't get anymore socks or car polish for Christmas ,
  17. Great link Reso..................., and humbling in the first part , but the porn bit in the second half , kinda makes me sad , well for me, never being a voyeur or spectator back up in the stands , are guys that short of a F**k that they need to septate ? instead of getting a real life , , if so they must be sad W*nkers ,( Brit saying ) BTW ,sorry for the spelling mistakes , I think I need stronger glasses and the hair on the palm of my hands is beginning to bother me ,
  18. P A T R I O T I S M only applies if you a are standing on favorable ground , just a dumb ass Brit view ,

    zune

well the first thing I did was to google "Zune " it looks good to me , but not at $239 USD in the UK + home pack at $173 USD , but I am also interested in any comments/experience ,
  20. Thanks Bro , just a few pics , BTW, that I didn't take
  21. Thanks Reso.... you're timing is impeccable , today was Britains remembrance Day on the 11th hour of the 11th month , ever since 1945 , and a sombre day here in the UK , and a moving service , http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7089225.stm, a vid link top right on the page , BTW, a reminder of our Queens long life , and another hint that Prince Charles the heir apparent may get bypassed , and Prince William may be our next king ,?
  22. , Yeah we have some odd old laws still on the books in the UK , but some are still usefull and serve a need , "Shoot a Welshman with a crossbow within the city of Chester after sunset" is a good point , it always has been a good sport in England ,and is a welshman doing in Chester anyway , Driving a steam engine while under the influence , is still valid , as we do have some still on the road , and they weigh 20 tons +, the 1 ton car does enough damaged , think of 20 + tons with a drunken driver ? The Bicycle lights comments are wrong , it does not have to be a filament bulb , acetylene lights are legal , but the Flashing LED lights are not ,as they do not show a continuous light , to make them legal another law would have to be passed to determine the flash rate , (Fire a cannon close to a dwelling house (Met Police Act 1839) OK this one works well , the definition of a cannon includes fireworks , as they are a machine capable of discharging a projectile , and modern ASBO's ( anti social behavior orders ) are reaching a street social status in the UK, among the we have whole families including grandparents proudly smiling for the national press photogaphers , when a good slap of old fashion justice would serve them better ,
  23. Thanks Reso for that link , and I agree Fiberoptic , but the sad fact is they are not being apreciated back in the UK , the view is that we should not be involved , we are a small nation and can't afford the loss of life, or the base line, the money to support this , we have been on the sharp end of 2 world wars , and both cost us dearly , now fallen from a super power to about 20 th in the world ratings, yeah, Brit troops are famous for being able to take the punishment , but they are unfortunatly getting little suport back home . my view, we should have kept out of all this , but once started we have got to see it through ,
  24. Just a tip for XP pro users , "automatic System Recovery works faultles , but as ninjageek said to have a partitioned hard drive is a must , even better still a second hard drive ,and of course you need the original XP disk ,
  25. just a thought, if you have made a shinny mark on the small black securing screws, a dab with a black CD marker pen may conceal it ,
