ok so your harddrive is sata but your dvd drive is ata 100. i can look for one of those...just a moment ok sorry if i missed this but what video card do you have again? i seem to remember a ATI i just dont remember the model

in teh end i stand by my post here im buying an 8600 gt 256mb ddr3 graphics card for an old emachines up upgrading along with a new psu and a gig of ram. i doubt this card also would get the big performance that he wants. i'd go with a 9800 or a gtx 250 or 260. for one tower im getting a gtx260 if you have an unlimited budget i'd make sure your tower could hold the card and get a gtx 285! especially with the setup you have

definately bf2 for me bf2142 looks cool but when i play it the guns are horrible and the gameplay just overall sucks.... and proof of the guns accuracy....i was litterally right up next to a guy who had his back to me and i unloaded a full magazine with my assault rifle or whatever you want to call it and my pistol...and none of them hit him. i might add that i was aiming down the scope or sights or whatever....

i dont think you first power supply completely failed, i think it was just one rail. and it caused some problems getting power...i dont know about powersupply issues though so im just guessing, mudman will know most likely. i doubt it had anything to do with converting movies, i think it was just that the powersupply decided it was time to go and your computer was just pulling power from it when it decided to stop. and it may have been have you checked to see if it flipped a breaker? it may be that your system took more than what the powersupply could handle and it blew causing the house lights to flicker. its happened before. mudman will clear up anything i got wrong as im hoping anyways.

woah woah woah. find exactly what is burning first. if its the psu its like a 40 dollar fix....if its the motherboard it'll be around 80. if everything smells burned....well we will get to that later
-
yeah that would work for a while. i wouldnt keep it in there though. hopefully you are luckier than i am and have a computer shop somewhere closer than 40 miles away.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817189005 here's a 500 watt...a little more amps per rail than the one you have. or you could just buy a new one like you have, it seems like a nice one...myself im paranoid cause i bought a cheap 25 dollar power supply from Hipro...i've never heard of them..but for a few years it seems to be doing fine on daily usage at least 10 hours a day.
-
Hey man im glad to hear that. this is why we love being here. tons of helpful people so...i can give you some links to newegg.com for powersupplies...how much power do you need?
-
exactly. which is why i said not to do it unless you HAD to. i dont want to send a money order to him for enough to buy a new cpu
-
i wouldnt do this unless i had to..but you wondered about your cpu still being cold...umm if your cpu gets hot without the heatsink on it then im almost guaranteeing you its good. but i wouldnt do that unless i had to...i'd be able to turn off the system very quickly. hmm...so are your case fans plugged into the motherboard or the powersupply...cause if they are plugged into the powersupply and not the motherboard it could be your mobo....and im asking again to make sure...does the harddrive light come on? and does it sound like everythings trying to boot up...like the drive is spinning and all that?
-
yeah even though its newer my 7950 could blow it away in dx 9 on most games. thanks for clearing that up. i thought it could but wasnt sure. yeah try lowest settings possible, no AA or anything. see if that helps. but i would still go with a new card especially on that sytem its a good build
-
sounds like 2 things to me...(without reading most of the posts, i appologize) either your power supply is like mudman said, or your motherboard, but im thinking its not your motherboard because the fans and lights still work..it sounds more like a powersupply issue....one time i let my pc go into standby mode and it completely killed the computers power supply. your powersupply isnt modular....edit...oh wait...mudman already posted hmm...well maybe you can try to get a new power supply? hell since you tried removing and replacing the batter, try to do the same with the cmos jumpers. take the jumper pin and put it back...maybe you can get lucky..im reading up on this on the net from another forum with alot of people having this problem and someone on there said it worked for them edit. i may have missed this but did you ever say if there were any bios beep codes?
-
it seems as though he should, but then again some 8500 cards i've personally used wouldnt even run older games with a setup that would normally run it maxed out. it may just be a driver conflict or something...maybe he's trying to use dx10? those cards cant handle it...and saying that part i dont really know right off the top of my head if those cards can utilize dx10...just a thought
-
ok i missed this post. it may be your pci slot if nothing else. and even if yoru cpu isnt working it should get the bios anyway correct?
-
do you get any bios beeps? and you are right if it was the card we'd know usually first off. maybe the vga (or DVI) cord on the monitor blew? it could just be a wire, but without more info which we will get, it just takes time, or it could be something bigger. i think the people here can figure anything out so just post up any info you think is good. like did you get bios beep codes when you powered on or anything like that
-
have you tried another video card just to make sure?
-
depending on budget from what i've learned pci express x16 2.0 cards can work in normal 1.0 slots so i'd go for a 9800GT 512mb or if you can spend more the geforce gtx 260 or 285
-
i own bf vietnam, bf2 and bf2 special forces expansion along with bf2142...i personally think bf2142 was HORRIBLE. the guns suck and the vehicles are dumb. but bf2 was sweet.
-
damn man should be a salesman...i'd buy it
-
very nice psu, not sure how i missed that. and how big of a performance hit? i knew there would be one but cant seem to find a decent explanation of how big it will be. i mean if its too big why would i upgrade that far?
-
ok as far as upgrading my amd system i'd need a new powersupply bigger than my 500 watt.. so here is what i thought for my upgrade on that... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817152031 powersupply http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130370 graphics card This card will work on a pci express x16 10 slot even though its made for a 2.0 slot RIGHT???? that would make my price for the upgrading on my current system at around 260 bucks...not bad. and i'll probably keep my 2 gigs of ram and not upgrade as well as keeping my 2.8ghz dual core cpu. and as far as my new build i want to do im still looking and deciding parts.
-
sorry, i meant its around 300 max for a pci express x16 card...well any video card that will run in a pci express x16 1.0 slot. and around 2500 max for a new build. and no as much as i like amd more..im going with intel on this next build
-
anything under 300. would like under 250 if possible lets say...i would like the geforce 295 but jeeeez too much for a card almost 600!!! my 7950GT was top of the line when i bought it and it was only 300 i was thinking of the geforce 260. but not sure. also so it is true that pcie 2.0 is fine to put into a pcie x16 (not 2.0) slot??? edit woops, sorry. fixed the price range
-
ok wow sorry to triple post or double post or whatever it is now...but i just read that pcie 2.0 cards are compatible with normal pcie ??? if so then what is a budget gaming card for cod 5 and so on that is way better than my 7950GT
