No, and I can understand why MS would suggest it. Instead of doing all of them at once, why not disable each device one at a time, rebooting after each to see if the error recurs after the individual disable. Also, come to think of it, have you looked in device mgr. to see if any are marked yellow or red? Also, check the box to unhide the hidden devices. I would not disable the hidden devices unless ms explicitly mentions them and leave you nic for last. My next suggestion was going to have you remove (delete) each device from the list one at a time, rebooting after each and then let windows re-install it to see it was that device driver causing the problem, but actually theirs is kind of a better idea than what I was going to suggest Edit:At this point. Since the software changes, scans, etc. have done no good, next up is hardware (possibly faulty) or hardware driver as indicated by some of the errors. Start with checking in device mgr. to see if any device is yellow or red tagged (if you haven't done that yet).

did it fix the problem? The nvidia is most likely for video card.

Won't burn out....Your pc will just not POST (boot) at all. If you buy a 266 mhz, it could be compat. with your old ram and most likely your memory will run at the 133 mhz speed not the 266. Might want to consider replacing your old chip as well.

Yup, makes sense. it must store them somewhere else until the system doesn't need them anymore and when you stop using it the copy goes away. contextual coherancy is quite a mouthful! Johnny Carsons Yacht? That cool. My brother is into woodworking (fine furniture) so I've heard the terminology (burl) and kinda know what it means. I couldn't saw a straight line with a miter box! I'm a bit punchy myself.......... programming takes alot out of me for some reason. Guess I'll sign off for the night, sounds like a plan.......... BTW: did you do the full blown shellext disable yet that the ms dude wanted you to do?

:haha: Most you would have to do is re-install your operating system, which isn't fun but if you haven't done it before, might be a new experience as well. Probably one you'd rather not have, though..... Hijackthis also backs up entries that you delete. Good luck, err on the side of caution at the beginning and if you have problems just post 'em!

Yeah, I'm an IT department of 1 for about 100 users and 5 server, with 4 locations. Do pretty much everything form networking, setting up new servers, and programming right to dropping new cable for installations. Never know what I'll be doin' from day to day.... I kinda like that aspect of it. I wokr some on my cars, but only go so far. Latest thing I did was a master brake cylinder on my POS '83 Ford F250. Do you do alot of this too? For the pic problem, try to browse to a different picture in a different folder and select it to show on your desktop. I believe that XP will use the folder of the current picture being shown as what it lists in the display options.

Thats got to be a pain. Its funny, at work we got rid of a domain (email) that was compromised and because of the rejections of emails from our server (the majority of which were spam emails in the first place, we got listed as a spammer by spam cop! Sometimes you just can't win............. Been working on a front end for an Access database so times pretty tight, but how's it going with Microsoft? Did they respond yet?

Might want to re-run your ad-aware, spybot, etc. now that it seems pretty stable. Is your XP updated? Microsoft also has a malicious program removal tool you might want to check out. http://support.microsoft.com/?id=890830 Registry editing is kind of an art. Download hijackthis, unzip into a directory, then run it. Now, just do a google search on each of the program files eg:win.exe yourself. Familiarize yourself with the good programs, dump the obviously bad, and post here the ones that you are unsure of, if you wish.

Sounds good. Hmmmms in plain sight? where else should they be??? :haha: Gotta sign off.. Have a good evening!

If you remember the file name, do a seach for it on your HD. Could be hiding somewhere.......?

Browse to the c:windowsWebwallpaper directory and see if its there.
-
I do not believe that you can delete from there. It may have changed the directory that its looking in for your desktop pics. If you remember where you stored the original picture file, browse to it and see if its there. I would not think that it would have been physically removed from your Hard drive.

Phew.......... Did you look to see if they are available to re-enable? Should be in there......

Disable, don't delete. Let me look a bit closer at the program..... hold on a sec.... EDIT: After selecting a few of them, let the Ctrl key go, then click on "File" menu then click "disable selected items". For heavens sake, DON'T hit the delete key again, please..................

Hi Stormy :haha: I mean cak46. Good to see you back. I'll also be on for awhile. :haha: The storm fizzled to nothingness around 10:00pm................ I would guess that sp2 might be disallowing the scripting change....... Looks like he wants you to send him copies of the logs we've been looking at (good idea) and wants you to disable all non-Microsoft software, processes, etc. Interesting tool. Gonna hold on to that one..... Ran it on my 98se machine and looks harmless... of course I didn't disable all the non-microsoft stuff either..... Back up your registry before you do it, just in case.... BTW, to select the ones to disable, click on the first one that you want to disable, THEN hold the Ctrl key while you click each one of the others that you want to disable. He was a bit vague on that instruction. Sounds ok to me, but it's not my machine..... I don't know what will happen on reboot with only ms related software, is what I'm saying I guess. BTW: If he does thrash your system and your not online for a coupla days, at least we have his email address so we can spam him to D :haha:

What program is notifying you of the attempted change?

Say what? Check out www.wunderground.com. 'nuff said here......... *********************** 69 Rat. Back on line but for a short time. Had to haul home some work today. If you could, don't run TUT until we've seen if the scripting will help us after changing the registry entry. Try it again, if you would. I'm hoping it's not a Service pack 2 issue. Will be checking periodically to see whats happening. Hope your sale went well........ Gotta love Ebay

I'm going to have to sign off in a few minutes. Big Thunderstorm coming my way, and no trustworthy surge suppressor......
-
Is there any way to disable the TUT temporarily? Could be blocking the changes, maybe? Don't know anything about TUT..............
-
Yeah, if they are there, that is why your scripting is not working. No need to download the script host SW. You can go ahead and delete it so that when you reboot, scripting will be running. Hopefully we'll get a bit more info. on the errors in the system/app logs or even with an application popup message.

Definitly sounds like it's caused by the way you sit at the desk. Hopefully the adjustments will help. Good reason to go buy one of those leather desk chairs I read about, though. I usually sit sideways to mine. Makes it easier to use the mouse but my hand goes numb on occasion because of the angle (Not OSHA recommended). Sometimes the numbness travels to my brain as well. :haha:

Sounds good. BTW: Headache is just subsiding now....... Had to have been the computer chair, not the beers last night for me, anyways. :haha:

There will always be an Administrator Account on your machine. This account has special properties and full absolute control of your machine is done thru this account. Your id, Martine, is a member of the Administrators Group, which is different than using the Administrator Id. You would only have to supply the password if you use the Administrator Id. Hackers, etc. can access your system with trojans and obtain Administrative access with that account, in some instances. Always a good idea to add a password to that account. (This is not related to the problem at hand, just a good idea) We might get a bit more information from the error if scripting is running. Check your registry for the following entries. If they are there, go ahead and delete them. We can always rewrite them later. Always make a backup of your registry prior to editing it. Do a restore point before deleting the entries, if they are there. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/guide/sas_sbp_lhak.mspx If the entries weren't there, go here and download the windows script install at this link then install it. I Wonder what disabled or removed it? http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=C717D943-7E4B-4622-86EB-95A22B832CAA&displaylang=en EDIT: To add the password, if you want to, Go to Start>controlPanel>users and Passwords and add it there. You will need to do this thru safe mode and you may have to log in as Administrator to do it.
