Damn you, I'm in Montreal and I get an average of 39. But I don't really lag for anything internet-related, so I'm fine. Under 50 is fine by my standards.

:2funny: These are great, a great potential for loss of time. My favourite was for the mentalplex: "Some users unaccustomed to concentrated thought may experience side effects such as headaches, dizziness or flashes of brilliance."

I like the permanent defragmentation mode in diskeeper 2007 (defragments as soon as the cpu is not in use, and can be resumed really fast, so u don't need to schedule defrags). Btw, I learned recently that XP's defragmentation engine was a stripped down version of an early diskeeper version. But yeah, it doesn't perform as well.

Video Card hardware/driver crashes
Le_Murphant replied to Le_Murphant's topic in Networking and Hardware
Voltageman, tried your program, installed a driver from nvidia, and I havent found a problem yet, so thx. You rock until I find a problem (I have not tested it much yet). If you don't see me posting in this topic again, take it as a good sign -
Best type of video card for animation?
Le_Murphant replied to Le_Murphant's topic in General Discussion
Raptors are sweet, but I wouldn't put them in raid if I were you, for the performance boost doesn't seem huge. Well at least that's what this article says http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/03/12/cheap_raid_ravages_wd_raptor/ -
Best type of video card for animation?
Le_Murphant replied to Le_Murphant's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, was thinking of getting raid 0 on my next box, just for everyday use (but I'm still a speed freak),causeI don't really need to back up lots of stuff so its not the end of the world if one disk fails. -
Best type of video card for animation?
Le_Murphant replied to Le_Murphant's topic in General Discussion
Alright, so Raid is out, and personally, I'm an nvidia fan (although I feel like I got ripped off with a card that seems defective now, but whatever). About a mac, I think that she would want dual-screens, Is that option available on a mac? Ive never seen any, but I guess it exists if macs are good for that. I havent had a chance to see her in a few days, but I'l make sure I ask her what programs she will use next time I see her, to see if its worth it to go for a cheap workstation card. -
Video Card hardware/driver crashes
Le_Murphant replied to Le_Murphant's topic in Networking and Hardware
I havent tried another card, its the only one I have that's pci-e. And when I install a new one, I don't uninstall the older one, thought it was done automaticaly, and the uninstall option says "advanced users only" (and I don't consider myself an advanced user ) -
A friend of mine wants to build a new rig and is going to use it mainly for 3D animation (she wants to study in that field). She asked me (and thus I am sending the question back to you guys) what kind of hardware she should get. I'm pretty sure that the most essential part in there is a big hard drive and a good video card, but about the video card, I'm not too sure what I should recommend. I know that real workstation cards (such as the FireGL and Quattro series) go for $500 and up, but that's kind of expensive. I was wondering if a mid-range gamer card (such as the 7600 GT) would do, and if it would be worth it to put it in SLI mode, or if it was really recommended to pay the big buck and go for the professional card. Also, about the hard drive, would it be worth it to go for a RAID 0 or 0+1 configuration? I'l ask her exactly what programs she plans on using and post them when I know.

In December, I got a new rig for my family which included a Nvidia GeForce 7300 GS video card built by Asus. I installed vista on the machine, and I found that the video driver frequently crashes, then either recuperates after a few seconds or does not. I've tried about every driver available out there, from nvidia, from Asus and from custom sites, and there is not one that has not crashed more than once. Sometimes the screen freezes, sometimes the pixels get all messed up, sometimes the system slows down to a point where I have to wait 10 seconds to see my mouse move. It doesn't happen too often, but its still a prick. I was wondering if it could be a hardware problem, or if it had to be the driver. As I have stated before, I went through about 4 or 5 different drivers, so I'm starting to wonder if it could be the card that's defective. I might still be able to send it back under warranty. Give me some insight on this.

Hmm, ok, that's definitively in the browser. I am afraid to say that I don't know then If you find out what causes it, I'l be interested to know. Maybe someone else has an idea. Or ask for a friend that's good with computers to check yours out.

CA3LE, I use nod32 on Vista and it works fine, but it might not be your favorite. JH2688, are your popups with images or just text? If they are just text, it might be the messaging service from windows, which is an easy fix.

err, you probably have a print screen button on your keyboard, press it and copy it to a paint document. If you don't idk, I guess there are some programs out there that could help you.

Not all teenagers are stupid. Sadly, those which are the most are usually the most exuberant. I too, tho, would have thought that you were older, mainly due to the news you bring to TMN with your anchor status.

I'm 19 Argh, someone over 90 with a computer. Hope they don't have arthritis Well, you don't have to be 90 to have arthritis anyways.
-
Hmm, i'm surprised with all of that, your problem hasent stopped. Can you post a screenshot of a popup (if its not too explicit) so we can see if it is likely to be a spyware?
-
I agree that if its adult material, it is highly likely to be malware. Windows Defender + Spybot + Ad-Aware will have 99% chances to stop the problem. Don't reformat, that would be a loss of time. If you can't find those programs of have problems with them, post, we will help you. Edit: A question for everyone: Do you think it would be worth it scrapping Spybot and AdAware and keep Windows Defender only? Safety-wise and ressource-wise?

Do you only get pop-ups when you browse the internet? I had quite a problem with them a while ago, but spybot took care of them. It might help you too, cause IE7 shouldn't have popups I believe. http://www.spybot.info/en/mirrors/index.html

Is there a limit to the number of hours you can work when you are under 18? I used to work 30 hours per week when I was 17. But then again, I live in Canada, so idk.

err, PC anywhere is 200$, got anything cheaper? Radmin is already cheaper, but is there anything free out there, maybe open-source? Logmein was free... Edit: about remote assistance, I didn't know I could use it from one user to the other, I thought only microsoft could come in. I'l do a bit of research on that, do you guys have recommended sites?

Hello. I was wondering if you know of any backdoors (I'm not sure if its the right term) that I could install on a computer to be able to access it from another, not necessarily in a subtle manner, its ok if the other computer is asked for acceptance. I'm gonna be moving into an apartment and I don't want to have to come home every time my mom has a question about how to do something with the computer. Ive tried LogMeIn already, it was okay, but I'm wondering if you have anything else to suggest.

You got a sweet price on the ram imo. 2 GB goes around 200 cnd $ at tigerdirect. Too bad Newegg doesn't ship to Canada.

I'm not a WOW player, but I stilled enjoyed the video quite a bit. But I don't blame people for not voting porn. I myself watch pornography on the internet, but I would not consider it as a candidate in the two applications that are most important to me. If I had an unlimited number of votes on what applications I use, it would have been in there however. Well, pretty much every category above would have been in there. I guess I'm an internet freak

No problem, I'm glad it works well now.
