I would give Verizon a call on this one.. it sounds like gateway might be releasing its ip and then renewing.. Not really sure on this one.

I am not sure which firewall runs on the lowest amount of ram at this time. However, you should be able to take the NIC out of the other computer with little or no problem. just makes sure you look at the card and get the model number and manufacture so that you can get the driver for the 98se machine.

I am personally a huge fan of some of the LCD. I love my widescreen on my dell laptop and would think about getting a bigger one but they are still way out of my price range.. Maybe after i graduate college.

if your connection requires you to use a specific values for the IP address, DNS, and Subnet then you kinda just messed everything up.. If you were playing around with the windows below you need to call your ISP before you can connect back straight into the modem.. You are going to need the values that go in those boxes..

do an ipconfig /all and see when the lease expires.. It will be listed under the connected adaptor. start->run->cmd->ipconfig /all

Have you heard about vista and IE7? The betas are downloadable to the IT/Corp people in the Beta section. that is my guess why the servers are running slow..

try power cycling the modem, restarting the computer.. my guess is that the modem isnt detecting the switch..

That works.. however.. it isnt bootable.. all you are doing is accessing a computer with it already installed.

I know that there are a hell of alot of member wanting to use windows vista but either dont want to mess with their hard drives or dont know where to get the system files. So here is the challenge. Linux offers Live cds. Basically what you can do is try a distro of Linux on CD before installing it on your hard drive. So everything is booted using the cd rom drive and the computer's memory. The Challenge: Create a bootable Vista cd. I know that it is possible to make a XP/2k3 boot cd from slashdot. http://slashdot.org/articles/04/02/15/0251249.shtml?tid=185&tid=190&tid=201 Take a look at that. Let me know if you have any questions. You are going to have to use a DVD burner to complete this project i am thinking.

As far as how much system resources each program takes? I know for a fact that Nortan is the worst of all of them. What I have read so far is that McAfee is slow and does take up some resources. But Nortan is just horrid and really bloated. Take it for what it is worth.

right i set that on the DI-524 with the subnet as 255.255.255.192. so i assigned the dhcp to issue between .2-.63 I guess .63 is the tansfir ip. Now i just need to know how to configure the other 2 routers. a Netgear WGR101 and a Dlink 614+

If you have a linksys wired router you can set a QoS rule for his connection.. Basically doing what you did just with out him knowing it.

most dsl companies use PPoE connections. Which means it makes it a little bit more difficult to network them using routers, but no impossible. Hince why alot of the dsl modems have routers built into them. If you have any question on how to network this type of connection drop a not in the help setion under networking.

It makes me think that the QoS might not be set correctly.. The BEFSR41 has QoS managment based on what port of the router you are on.. Your brother might have a higher setting meaning that he gets the bandwidth priority. Try lowering his and raising yours. you can also set limits per port on the router. So setting a 4mb limit on your port and 512k on his should be ok.. that means that you will get 2.5 and he will get 512k.. check this for configuration details in the user guide at linksys.com or the one provided in the box.

Even if you have NAT that isnt going to protect you 100%. Nat works by responding to extrenal request that were called by internal computer. So if you have a piece of spyware that sends a request.. you have just defeated NAT.. So NAT doesnt scan outgoing traffic to see if was originated by a program or spyware. This is also how the Microsoft firewall works.. which is why it is flawed so much.. It only scans incoming traffic for threats.. So you are going to want to pic up some type of software hardware to protect your computer.

Ok.. 3 routers.. the default subnet is 255.255.255.0. So i change it to 255.255.255.192 to get 4 subnets. Now how do i configure the routers to use each subnet?
