  11. No that is fairly normal.. there is no more risk involved doing it this way compaired to how you were doing it before..
  12. O no doubt SP2 does offer protection for users who cant keep their stuff protected.. the firewall is something that is just down right pathetic: However, the software suffers from two major flaws, critics say: it does not block outbound traffic, and it can be switched off by another application, possibly even by a clever worm. That is one hell of a firewall you got there.. nice job ms..

  16. the difference is between (kB) kilobytes and (Kb) kilobits.. you connection is in Kilobits... but you download in bytes... very confusing but that is how they do it..
  17. Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer, a mechanism at a phone company's central location that links many customer DSL connections to a single high-speed ATM line. The distrubition setup is different.. but that doesnt make consumer DSL dedicated. Never say never.. the only reason that you didnt loose your phone in the huricane is because all of the wiring is underground.. Plus your in atlanta.. So the chance that you service or utilites went down are very remote compaired to those in florida. some like 85% of telephone wiring is above ground. meaning that it is more likely to be lost in bad weather. The other reason that you didnt loose you connection is that my guess is that you has some t1 or some other technology that had a garuentee on it about up time.
  18. Yes you should be able to do a system restore.. I have never removed sp2 so..
  19. you can try this.. "If you have a small Windows network at home, see if disabling the Windows Firewall service crashes the "Computer Browser" service within minutes and it will not stay running. This may affect your ability to browse your network. I found instead you should disable your firewall through local group policy: Start / Run / gpedit.msc Go to Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Network / Network Connections / Windows Firewall / Standard Profile and adjust "Windows Firewall: Protect all network connections" to "Disabled". This serves the purpose of disabling the firewall but allows the computer browser service to operate as usual. If you do this on a notebook, remember to install an additional firewall or reverse the setting when you travel!!" extremetech.com

Both are $160ish with the plextor at 230 The only thing that I dont know about is the sony's quality.. I had a friend who had one of the original sony cd-rw drives and it was so picky about media.. the sony does look like the faster drive.. but the hp has litescribe.. or what ever they call it..
  21. The only way you are going to dedicated dsl service is if you pay for it.. otherwise both services are the exact same.. think of it this way.. with dsl you are dialing in and then using the Telephone companies network of telco equipment to connect. With Cable you are using the television's network to get to the service.. so both are not really deticated at all.. in the end you are just connecting to one big pipe that everyone shares.. Now if you wanted a dedicated line you are talking about SDSL.. which you cant use voice on at all.. so regular dsl is in no way dedicated.. Nor is cable. here is a good little explaination:http://corp.bayarea.net/bayarea/dsltypes.shtml
  22. umm.. yeah you are going to have to remove sp2.. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;875350&Product=winxp follow that.. Windows firewall isnt a real firewall anyways.. It only scan inbound traffic.. not outbound.. which in some cases is the most important..
  23. I was wondering if anyone has and external? If so what model and brand.. I am looking at the hp dvd640e.. Any help would be awesome..
  24. 15000 free for something that is going to be about as fast as cable.. 9000 for an 8mb connection.. both times it is fairly reasonable that you could be with in those limits.. I depends on what you are doing on the internet.. I have Comcast cable and love it.. it is fast and they upgrade the speed once every 1-2 years. There are so many factors that can effect DSL service that most of the time people dont want to mess with it.. Line noise, distance to CO, and the fact that it isnt really a true always on connection.. You still need to dial up to get on the internet.. Most modems disconnect you from the service after a certain amount of inactivity. Although if you put a router on the line it is possible to keep the connection live..
  25. i need to see the error messge that you are getting..
