  1. Which desktop did ya go with?
  2. This REALLY helped me out TONS!! http://www.howtoforge.com/the-perfect-desktop-ubuntu-8.10-p3 I am still working on that page. But you should get to the place you need to be.
  3. I got mine up and running. Tried several. Love mandriva 2008. Right now I am digging the gnome desktop MUCH better. Time will tell. Just faster and I really dont want and need all that cube and exploding windows stuff. Seems like kde is iffy. I just find stuff so much easier gnome.
  4. Yea I did take a look at that one ghost. After the fight I had With ubuntu and simply mephis (think that was the name??) Mandriva just loaded so fast, so easy updates are simple, Think I will just stay with this one. From a old windows user this IMHO is about the best one to start out with. Learn it and stuff. I gotta long row to hoe. Lots to learn. Lots to read. Thankful I have Nortons ghost 14 that will back up linux no problem. I pretty much know xp, I am not a fan of vista, and the new windows heading our way, Just think its time to switch. Time to get on with my geek self and learn something new. Just my 2 cents. But thanks for the imput.
  5. Well myself after deciding to get back into linux. I have decided after reading to avoid kde 4 for now. In time maybe. I also tried a few, ubuntu, hates my cd burner and older versons with kde 3.5 I want refuse to install. I then remberd Someone talked of Madvriva. So I went and foud the verson that had the last verson of kde 3.5 with it. Its mandriva 2008. Its forsure the one That I am gonna stay with. Has a windows feel, super easy, has a kde 3.5 I wanted. Installed in no time, I downloaded, burned and installed in about 30 mn. Super easy, Super Fast Seems stable, and all my drivers work. May wanna take a look at it.
  6. Thank you for making my point. Its cool, more and more new users are making the switch. The days of Just that type of attitude from the hardcore linux geeks will hopefully be a thing of the past, The days of linux being just on a geeks computer are coming to a end. I myself will continue to help when and however I can, I will Keep it super simple. And enjoy flaming the old school linux user. Its something to do when boredom sets in. Things change, In time, this to will change.
  7. Because your in linux mode and thinking linux. When someone asks a question. Explain it like you would to your 80 year old grandmother. Explain it like you would a windows issue with a new user. Open...Point..........click.........do this. If they need to download from a repoistory, and can find it there, Explain or give them a link to what the heck a repository is. Explain Linux is for safe surfing.........windows is for playing with files. Many a time when helping a new window user. I had to stop. And point, click, open my self just to rember how to do it the easy way, Most the time its just second nature. When speaking linux to new users your speaking a forien language brand new to them. Your a smart guy lewis, you know your stuff. Now you just gotta get to the point of "dumbing" down the responce.
  8. Well I have decided to go with CentoOS. I like the kde3 verson. Hate the 4 verson. Rember, Linux.......Use it for surfing, Downloading any files and messing with them, Xp Generally speaking Linux geeks tend to Pi@# me off when offering help. They wanna give a half a$# response using terms a new user probally does not understand, And hope google provides the rest and fills in the blanks. I HATE THAT. I have Flamed more than a few for that kinda garbage. Point and click step by step. Lets not frustrate a already frustrated new user. OK?? Lets not make it tougher by making them play hide and go seek with google. While The linux geeks may think they are being super geeks, The only thing they are showing me is there a complete clueless DumbA#*. Either help or shut up. I really suggest pokeing around kubuntu forums. No matter what flavor of Linux you go with. Brand New users tend to give that one a shot first. You may get Lots of useful info from there. I have centosOS down and gonna burn and see how it goes. It would be the same to me as telling a brand new windows user how to deal with a ziped file from the net. A linux geek would respond.........download winrar......there ya go... Download the file save to desktop. Download and Install winrar...WHen winrar is done. Right click on the file you just downloaded and pick the term"extract here". Make sure to scan the file with a antivirus before openiing. If you need any more help, Just ask. Thats how you help a new user.
  9. Myself LIke Kubuntu. I can tell ya Someone once said and I firmly believe it. Pick one and stick with it. Give it plenty of time. There is a learning curve. Now if you really want something as close to windows xp as you can get, Mandrake. I also suggest is joining the forum of the flavor of lynux you go with. Lynux is fun to mess around with. Learn and all that good stuff. Just keep a copy of windows on your computer for the important stuff. Oh if you wanna back up lynux, Ghost 14 from nortons works real well. I would take say two bulids your are considering. Then hit there forums and see who is having trouble with what then kinda go with your gut. I thought about jumping up to kubuntu 8.10 but not real sure I am to crazy about kde 4. Because you can not get the earlier verson with 8.10 I will just stay with 8.04 and with the vista nightmare, Will try harder to learn it.
  10. Sorry ghost. Lynux and Apple is what windows should of been long ago. Millions spent making it and lynux is still more secure, Does way more things, Has some sweet eye candy and you can torrent it all day without the fear of the feds tossing your home and your new boyfriend tossing your salad. After everything I have seen of late. Its time to take another hard look at lynux. Messed with it once. Gave up. Think I will put forth more of a effort.
  11. Gates pulled another boo boo. Ok everyone knows this pretty much a "new improved vista" Like hackers have gotten xp delt with. Vista is pretty much a done deal now. New release of windows 7 hack has already pretty much done. So in short the second this hits the selfs, The torrents will fly. Systems will crash, babies will cry and everyone will continue to ask, Hows come this wont boot with xp. And for the love of god how do I put xp back on my computer.
  12. Forsure give us your thoughts on what you think of it. Improvements all that good stuff. Of course when you have the time.
  13. Just always rember newer is not better. I tried something like that. Updated my drivers, Never again and thank you norton's ghost.
  14. From some I have seen they claim a phone call was all it took to get a key. Think microsoft is really changing there ways with this release. It until it goes final I just don't think they will get to excited about how many have it. Makes sense. The more people talk about it, maybe people will not avoid it like they did vista. Its just the geeks that will play with it anyway. I have seen some really good things about this one. They say it will compare like windows 2000 does to xp. Vista=WIndows 2000 Windows 7=Xp. So far things are pretty positive. Vista drivers work with it so thats a good thing. Had to laugh about some complaining about this and that not working. Um hello thats why its called beta. I may give windows 7 a shot. I hated and avoided vista. My thing was the whole boot issues. I would hope they fixed that this time. I mean vista and xp dual booting was a night mare. That was a BIG OOPS from microsoft. I know some very smart people are working on a way to slipstream vista the way you can Xp with nlite. That would be another biggie. So depending how it all plays out in a couple of years this geek may make the jump. Not to change the subject, what will have to change to make you switch from xp??
  15. If ya have it, did ya check with your home owners insurance to see by any chance it may be coverd?? I mean really it was not dropped, It was probally a power surge created by a thunder storm.
  16. Been reading up on the new windows comming out. Various sites so no one link. Its nothing more than a tweaked vista, The Beta is out I think. Its designed to run on older computers and not near as naggy as vista is or was. They are also hoping to improve peoples perception of vista. If you like vista thats cool. There is already software out there to tweak it out better. While the cost has not been revealed, Its probally gonna be cashy. The looks and feel of it will be just like vista. So it short. Its the New improved vista. I just hope they fix the boot issues vista had. Um no thanks. Still no reason to give up xp. Microsoft is giving no real good reason for xp users to jump to vista or above. There lack of common sense just baffles me. But when your worth billions, who cares what people think. Hackers already have vista figured out. This release will make it easier for them and won't take as much work as vista did.
  17. Really new to this program. Have the script done, Just wanna see if anyone can help before I post it. Problem, Useing autoit for a nlite addon. Script runs fine. I just need to get it to stop and wait while the program installs. It dose not wait, the install fails. Give me a shout if ya wanna see the script.
  18. Thanks tommy. With 2 small ones running around here and them heading out soon to beg for candy, big time useful information.
  19. Well one thing good came of it. I checked out the boards for far cry 2. The gamers are just ripping the game to shreds. Guess it pretty bad. Not sure why they called it far cry 2. No jack carver. No ties to the orginal. So I will not buy it. Ubisoft has just gone down hill. Assassins creed while a good game, most hated, Fary Cry 2 that has no story line that connects it to the first far cry. Not sure why these companies just dont hire say 10 hard core gammers to try the game. Get there feed back. Like a beta release with just say a few missions. Or release to the public, then see how they react.
  20. Speaking of Illegal Downloading. The Hackers have pulled off a shocker. A Game that is not to be released until tomorrow or the day after has not only hit the internet, but can be installed and played with the right patch. These Guys don't stop, They will Stop making games for the pc.
  21. Getting ready to try and figure out a silent install with autoit. Understand most but must be missing someting. Gonna use it for a nlite. Anyone know how to do this and can help?
  22. Really dlewis knows TONS more about the hardware stuff than I do. I will say for a build I really like starting out with the barebones setup. Get the tower, motherboard, cpu, and power supply all pre installed. That way one of the three go bad its on them. I like the choices at cpusolutions.com. Then just as time and money allow, Add the ram, harddrives, Dvd Drives, all that kinda stuff. I do rember not only dlewis but someone else say stay away from the quads for now. Kinda a over kill and not much better than the dual cores, Something to do with the software not ready for the quads. With so many 8800's out there I would think game makers would try to keep games able to run on that card. That was one of the reasons I went with the 8800gt. In the end. Really, Decide how much cash you are gonna part with, then Go from there. The 8600 I had ran all the recent games including crysis just fine. Looked great. SO take the whole "this card is so much better" with a grain of salt.
  23. No girlfriend/boyfriend as well. My guess, That set up is in his parents basement.
  24. This is just unbelivable. Compared to "Prepared," you don't. In a case of game addiction gone officially bananas, gaming blog Joystiq reports on what is surely the biggest Warcraft fan of them all. Known only under the moniker "Prepared," the gamer plays a stunning 36 World of Warcraft accounts on 11 different computers...simultaneously. Stemming from a desire to manage raids -- large-scale gameplay sessions that typically require the teamwork of multiple players -- all by himself, the die-hard gamer seems undaunted by both the financial and lifestyle commitments to such a geeky endeavor. "It costs me exactly $5711 in subscription costs per year with 36 accounts on the 6 month pay schedule," he writes. "Not bad considering I'm looking at it like it's a hobby and there are more expensive hobbies out there than World of Warcraft." Like yachting, perhaps. And despite the downturn in the economy, Prepared can't wait to get his hands on the upcoming Warcraft expansion, Wrath of the Lich King. "I plan to be at the store when it opens and will purchase 36 copies of it. With tax, it should be about $1500 for all of them." Word of Prepared's over-the-top addiction comes on the heels of the annual Blizzcon Convention, a fan-oriented celebration of the games created by Warcraft publisher Blizzard http://videogames.yahoo.com/feature/gamer-juggles-over-30-warcraft-characters/1255554
  25. Well I got my upgrades done. Putting in the cpu was simple. The video card was a bit of a challenge, That was my own fault. I went from 4200 to the 6000 dual core, I jumped my video card from the 8600gt to the 8800gt. The only thing about the cpu that I wish I would of done diffrent. Amd for what ever reason made the fan that comes with the heat sink impossible to remove. Its like a rivot type of job. No screws. Easy Fix. I will spend 20 bucks for a new heat sink that has the removable fan. I will replace that. I like to remove the fan and clean the fan and the heat sink with a tooth brush, Not a fan of compressed air. For the 220 bucks the final bill will come to with the new heat sink, I am impressed. Computer a bit faster, Games run tons better. Got a free game with the video card, Frontlines fule of war. This is probally the last I update this computer. Couple of years I will build a new one. So for the cash and the ease of putting everything in, Well worth it. Bites I gotta replace my heat sink. Should of waited for the new heat sink before putting in the cpu. Iive and learn. Learned lots, Not near as freaked out replacing the cpu. Video card was super long but fit ok. May hit staples and get a 3rd party cooling fan for the video card. Unsure. There ya go. Now I am sure everyone will sleep better with that pointless information.
