For whatever reason installing programs with kde has me baffled. I have asked, googled, cried, Tired to pay the 13 year old kid to show me, im getting no place. God bless the lynux users, they are just not able to beat it into my head. Lynux users can be wayyyyyyyyyy to geeked out. Pretend I can barley find the computer on switch, and I am you 90 year old grandmother. I just laugh at myself. I am just not getting it. I have taken great strides, learned tons, will learn more. Im just to obsessed with trying to figure out how to do a simple line command install to move on and figure out the next thing I wanna figure out. "how to get a "my computer" type icon like xp. I will figure it out, But not til I get this line command install done. I download the program and save it to my desktop. Then im clueless. God I am gonna feel silly when I do figure this out. I am probably making it harder than it is.

Ok go to to your add remove programs. Search the word start. In the settings section you should see the word start-up manager. If its not installed install it please. Then go to your system settings and find Start-up manager. Open it and edit your settings as you wish. On you keyboad you should be able to select the os you want with the up and down arrows. Hope that helps.

Got a link for more info?? I just installed the latest greatest kubuntu, Im running 2 gig of ram under a dual core atholon 4200. Up to this point super impressed. Speeds are super, desktop is fast, software they offer is really sweet. I really like kde desktop. I just keep xp for my major games. Right now really into assassins creed. The free ones they offer for ubuntu seem ok. Have yet to try them so the jury is still out. Just hope Nortons Ghost 14 backs it up ok. Did the last verson of ubuntu. -

Yes I think im using grub?? The place you speak of is not on kde its the other desktop I can not rember!! My brain hurts. LoL -
Ok I have lynix installed on my slave, its kubuntu, Im using the kde desktop, and sometimes the other one (I can never rember that name!!) Chose this one just to learn, and boy and girls have I learned. Took me a couple of days just to figure out how to back it up, (Norton Ghost 14!! Tried and works without a hitch) In kde I for the life of me can not find out how to access my computer harddrives, you know like on xp you just click on (my computer icon) I would love to know how to change the boot order as well. Wanna boot xp by default (ol lady and kids) . I know there are 2 options (startup manager for ubuntu which I can not find and figure out how to install) And you can edit from the command line, just not sure how?? I am using ubuntu 7.02?? I think?? The 7.10 version would just not behave on my computer. And the 8.04 same thing. It had problems with my nividia drivers. This version of lynux is just a learning tool. Its stable and runs ok. Playing with both desktops. Kde and the other one I can never rember the name. Learning lots. Lots more to learn. Backing up and restoring was my first big hurdle. I can do that now. Thanks to nortons ghost. Few weeks Im gonna pop opensuse on my slave.

Well I decided to make the jump. Gonna give lynix a shot and see what happens. I decided to go with a diffrent approach. I went with a ubuntu based lynix and chose a modified verson of it. The one I went with is "ulitmate edition 1.7" While I have only been messing with it for a few hours. I Like it. Its based on ubuntu 7.10. The thing I really like about this type of release is everything is installed for ya. Java, Abode, My nividia drivers. wine. Has tons of programs preinstalled. Gives me a chance to play around, see what is what. So installing anything is really not necessary. It simply works well, I have lots of programs to try and see what I like. What I hate. It really is a windows type inviorment, Even found a boot manager that will change the way it boots up. I put xp by default. For the ol lady and kids. I can mess around and learn how to install stuff. The programs that came with this was impressive. Really think I made the right choice. Gives me a chance to play with lynix with out the hassles of installing programs, and trying to find drivers, and I can learn at my own pace. In time after I get deeper into the world of lynix and understand it better, I will give a few others a run. opensuse will probally be my next. I just keep every thing backed up. My d drive id my "try new operating system drive".

I am really considering hard, Disel motor, used vegitable oil, IM sure you have all seen how its done. Tons of resturants would gladly give it to ya. May be the wave of the future, only downside, your car smells like french fries.

The problem with american healthcare is the doctors malpactace insurance. Its horrid. While I agree if a doc screws up then yea he should have to pay. I just don't think he should have to pay a million bucks for every mistake. Americans use lawsuits just like the lottery. Sue the hell out of them hope for a fat settlement check. There needs to be a cap on damages. Many docs are leaving the profession because they are unable to afford the insurance. Even did see one story a doc put everything in his wifes name and goes without insurance. I am lucky. In my area we have a really nice clinic. Its open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, Last time I had to go it was only 60 bucks. Oh and the wait, there is a sign on the door, if you have to wait more than 20 min, say something. I only waited maybe 10 min. No apointment needed. There is a doc in a town about 2 hours from me, chages 5 bucks a office call. Yes thats right 5 bucks. He is super rich and does not need the money. He does it because he cares. Oh and the clinic I spoke of. If your poor, they charge you nothing. So never be afraid to poke around and ask around. You may have something close to that in your area. I just found out about this and have lived around here for 20 years. One other thing. If a doc gives you drugs that are just to expensive, you can apply to the company that makes them and most the time they will give them to you for nothing. Nice tax write off for them, good PR. Never be afraid to ask a doctor or even tell them you can not afford it. THere are ways to get the help, just sometimes it can be a bit of a trick to find that help.

Why do people hate Windows Vista? Has Apple brainwashed America?
ninjageek replied to CA3LE's topic in General Discussion
With the "pillars" in mind, I decided to take a look at the 11 reasons why Vista remains on shaky ground: 1)Market confusion. From the beginning, everyone moaned about the fact that there were simply too many versions of the OS for sale. Who needs all the variations? It's stupid—plain and simple. What you want is the one best version, not a slew of namby-pamby ones. This happened because the folks at Microsoft know only how to merchandise and, seemingly, not how to market. 2)Code size. I've got two words for you: TOO BIG. Enough said. 3)Missing components. Yes, WinFS, the promised file system and a core pillar of Vista, isn't there. The promises regarding the development of this file system go back to 1991. And Microsoft cannot make it a reality? Why? 4)Laptop battery-life drain. This was supposed to be fixed with special code and hybrid hard disks (HHD). Still, users have to resort to expensive silicon drives. 5)HHD fiasco. I'm still irked about being told by the HD industry that the benefits of the new generation of hard drives will "make people flock to Vista." That was over two years ago, and suddenly there's silence about the whole thing. One of these days, someone will tell me what really happened. My guess: It never worked correctly, and no one could make it work. 6)Bogus Vista-capable stickers. Microsoft's "Windows Vista capable" campaign was an incredible marketing botch. Computers were sold with an indication that they were "Windows Vista capable" when they were not. This did wonders for goodwill. 7)Missing drivers. It seems incredible that all of the Windows drivers that worked with XP did not necessarily work with Vista. How does that happen? 8)Conflicting advice. There was no consistent advice for users about implementation, and Microsoft did nothing to help. Some people said that you should get a new computer only with Vista preloaded and not upgrade. Others said upgrades were fine. Others upgraded and complained. Microsoft should have put up a specialized Web site that could test machines remotely and tell users whether it would be a good idea—or not—to upgrade. A promotional/test CD-ROM that could boot Vista (like those Knoppix Linux disks) would have been a good idea, too. 9)XP mania. You'd think that the world was in love with Windows XP. Everyone wants to keep it on the market, and this makes Vista look even worse. What's more, there were far too many reports about people reverting to XP after an "experience" with Vista. If Microsoft had the testing service that I mention above in place, this would never have happened. 10)Mediocre rollout. Unlike other rollouts of important Windows products, Microsoft did not put on much of a show with Vista. While there were some weird posters placed in subways and maybe a few TV commercials, none of it compared with the rollouts from a few years back, where the company got worldwide attention. By comparison, the company seemed almost sheepish or embarrassed by Vista, something that was also reflected in the recent lackluster rollout of Server 2008—a total snooze. This sent the wrong signals to users and may have made them hypercritical. 11)Performance. You're not supposed to deliver a new operating system that's been in development for more than four years yet performs worse than the previous OS. Performance should be at the top, not the bottom, of the to-do list. You get the sense that Microsoft just piles code on top of code and somewhere in the middle of it all is MS-DOS 1.0. I could probably put another dozen items on this list. The point is that it's a big list already. With all the resources in the world at Microsoft's disposal, you have to wonder why the company cannot get everything right even once. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2286065,00.asp -
The home premium links to a 64 bit verson. I would almost be sure a 32 bit would be fine?? For what its worth on vista, I would put that bad boy on a external harddrive so you can just play and learn, That is if vist will let ya. That is my game plan only I will use lynix. Think I will just use that suse that dlewis talked off. As long as he keeps posting I would be almost sure he would be willing to help a lynix noobie out.

Why do people hate Windows Vista? Has Apple brainwashed America?
ninjageek replied to CA3LE's topic in General Discussion
No idea on unix. You could be right? All I know most of what is in vista can be found in either lynix or the mac. If microsoft wants to release something, try something no one else does or uses. Try something cutting edge. Vista imho just took 2 steps back. Trying to keep anyone from tweaking it they way they want. I guess no mater what is tried, either the mac or lynix already beat microsoft to the punch. -

I still wonder why apple, now that they have switched to a pentium chip does not make a run at the pc? Darn mac's are just so expensive compared to a pc. It will be intresting to see what microsoft steals from apple and lynix for there next release. -

ninjageek replied to CA3LE's topic in General Discussion
Oops, I stand corrected. Had no idea vista had come down so much. Still not enough of a reason to switch. IMHO vista is the stepping stone to the next microsoft release. I am almost sure microsoft is hearing and seeing all the complaints about vista, lets just hope they fix thoes issues in the next release. If not, xp works fine and people will just continue to use it, and if it can no longer be purchased, then they will just hit the torrent sites and get it. One thing I REALLY hate about vista is the updates. You really have no choice what you update and what you don't. It just downloads them all without much of a explanation. Unless I am wrong about that to?? -

I have yet to see any reason to switch to vista? If its the eye candy, that can be done for free. Microsoft and vista just dont want you messing with vista, try to edit vista boot.ini file, can not tweak out the connection in vista. Vista was no wear ready for prime time. I really think vista will turn into a "Windows Me" type release, Microsoft really droped the ball with vista, People are turning back to xp in a big way. Most average users don't have or don't need a monster computer to run vista with all the bells and whistles. I did see a huge grass root type movement to keep xp on the market. Last I saw 100 thousand people signed a online petition to keep xp sales and support til the next release of windows. Bottome line, vista 400 bucks and a pretty powerful computer. Xp Pro, 130.000 bucks, and Will run fine on older computers. -

When it comes to mp3 players I am pretty much in the dark. I have a 10 year old girl that wants a ipod for her birthday. Now she is just your average kid. Probally loose it who knows. My concern is how fragile are thoes things? I mean they are cheep, I just don't want to have to replace it every time she drops it or whatever as well. Make senes?? What do you guys and gals think?

I have given this thought and really, it just makes sense, heat kills cancer cells, Radio waves are attracted to metal, thats why you have a antena, Radio waves can create heat, While I understand these people that are working on this all the time, just seems to me, they need to start thinking "out side" the box more. Just hope the flipping drug companies don't try to put a stop to this thing, Cause really, The drug companys will loose billions if a cure is found.

A ham operator in florida may of stumbled on a idea to not just cure one form of cancer, but all forms of it. 2 leading university's are testing it now on animals. One scientist says its the most promising he has seen in over 20 Years. When Asked why was this not thought of before? Well its just something they never considered. All this info is from a 60 min thing I saw. Heat will kill a cancer cell. Gold nano particles can be engineered to attach to only a cancer cell. The body is injected with thousands of these type cells. The radio wave heats only the nano cells, Cancer dies. While Its a wait and see, how ironic would it be that such a simple idea would save so many. This truly falls under the "KISS" rule. Keep It simple stupid.
