With all due respect. I just think, like tommy said it boils down to the cost. Both the pc and the mac have good and bad points. Most will say they will never buy a mac because of this or that, when in reality its the cost thats the factor. Most will just find a reason to dislike something that may be out of there reach money wise. I have tried lynix, while super nice I just found it unstable on my pc. Sometime down the road I may load lynix on my slave again, try a diffrent flavor. Right now my fav is ubuntu. Things are always changing in the lynix world. I may load suse next time. Thats part of the reason I have a slave drive. Try diffrent flavors of lynix. Also enjoy diffrent flavors of xp. While I forsure own a legit xp pro key, I also have a friend that has several modified versions of xp I test drive. No I don't register them, I have 30 days, then its either delete or my xp key. Have yet to find a modified version I am ready to throw my extra legit xp pro key on to. but one never knows.

Will windows 7 be another waste of time??
ninjageek replied to ninjageek's topic in General Discussion
I just think that people will rember vista and use a wait and see for the next verson of windows. To many jumped on the vista bandwagon only to ask how to get rid of it and go back to xp. I just think gates will really have to pull out all the stops to get people away from xp and on to a new operating system. -
Now the big hype is on windows 7. Will it be another flop like vista?? I think the 2 big problems with vista was the price and the ability to clone xp to look and act like vista. Many said no way could you put glass effect in xp. Sure ya can and there is a free program to achive just that. When windows 7 gets close, many will just start working on cloning xp to look and act like that release. I guess I should add it takes a pretty hefty computer to fun vista full blast. I think, that people will just avoid it like they did with vista. Clone xp to look and act like it, and save some money on another release that will not be needed. I thing I hated the most about vista, was the price and it wanting to take over your computer. Be inresting to see if gates and microsoft learned there lesson. I just feel sorry for the people that went out and paid full price for vista, and got it on a computer from wallmart. Myself, I HATED the fact it was such a pain to dual boot xp and vista, and unable to edit the boot ini file to fix it. You would think microsoft would of atleast got the dual boot right.

Well got yahoo messenger many years ago. Started hitting chat rooms. Fell for a female. She CLAIMED!! she did not want me. Went to visit and only called her 30 to 40 times a day. Stopped by and said hello to her at work. That silly female decided to give me some new body spay. Most would call it pepper spray, I call it a gift of love. So there I am hanging out in her house, Trying to see what kind of undergarments she likes, and that silly woman comes home, she was so surprised she gave me another fine gift, 50,000 volts from a stun gun. Now I know she was just trying to show me how i really made her feel. All tingly inside. So you would think that court order to stay away for 5 years was her just playing hard to get. Hey its what I thought. So I went to surprise her in the park. She was so happy to see me, she turned really fast and accidentally hit me up side the head with that baseball bat she was carrying. I know she meant to give it to me as a gift, and after the 4th or 5th blow to my head, She felt bad for being so clumsy. I understood. Hey she was my 300 pound love muffin. I wanted to get her a new set of dentures for her birthday, In fact I was heading over to her trailer to tell her of my plans. She must of forgot she had that hot pan of grease in her hands. Cause she was so surprised she spilled some of it in my lap. Not sure why, but the cops came by, took me to jail, I know it was just her way of saying how much she loved me. And wanted to keep me locked away all for herself. Now I know after I get done serving my 10 to 20 years, my love muffin will be waiting for me. She wrote me once, wanted to show me the new gun she got. She must really like hunting. She says she can not wait to see me again. So yes software changed my life, I know touching story, feel free to shed a tear.

If mac's were not so expensive I would love to have one. Still do not understand why steve will not jump in and give windows a run for the money. I know macs are running pentium chips now. At least I think thats right. ?? I know a a couple of people at one time figured out how to put the mac os on the windows pc.

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9904207 If it works like they say it does, sure would be handy for the average user. Make backing up your computer super simple. This may be old news, first I have seen of it, and wonder why some one did not think of this long ago. Myself I use norton ghost 2003.. But its pretty geeky.

I have seen and used all the fancy stuff in both lynux and vista. Desktop cube, the windows flip, all the other stuff. So do you really find any of it usefull at all? If so what do you use the most?? The only programs that I really find usefull and use all the time is "winroll". You right click on the very top of the open window and it rolls up. http://www.palma.com.au/winroll/ Deskpins I use allot to. http://www.softpedia.com/get/Desktop-Enhancements/Other-Desktop-Enhancements/DeskPins.shtml I also use iconoid http://www.sillysot.com/ . Keeps my icons where I put them. And last but not least, stardocks, objectdock. I use the free version. I have weather, a clock, access to programs I use the most. And thats all I use. The other stuff you get with lynux and vista, I just found no use for. Sure looks cool but thats about it. The programs I mention I use are free. I do use "explorerxp" http://www.explorerxp.com/ When I want to find out what programs are takeing up what space. And CCleaner. is something I use every day. That it.

Looks like the riaa who wants cable companies to monitor torrent usage may be out of luck. Below is the story. But the short verson is cable companies that monitor usage of users or even system administrators who put software on a computer to monitor its usage, may be breaking the law. It all ties in with wire tapping. http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/2008/05/isp-content-f-1.html Fixed your quote

Just caught this article. Yea I have a amd machine. Seems sp3 will hose your machine if you have a amd chip. Windows XP Service Pack 3 finally arrived to our computers this week… And is now killing AMD machines, according to Jesper Johansson, former program manager for security policy at Microsoft. The problem relates to machines with SP3 installed rebooting and then not allowing users to get so much as Safe Mode. The problem is mainly affecting AMD users who bought their machines from HP. Johansson attributes the problem to the way that HP puts images of Windows onto its machines, using the same copy for both Intel and AMD boxes. "Because the image for both Intel and AMD is the same all have the intelppm.sys driver installed and running. That driver provides power management on Intel-based computers. On an AMD-based computer, amdk8.sys provides the same functionality," says Johansson. Some other OEM’s beside HP have the same practice, and presumably their users will be seeing the same issue. There is another problem with SP3 that has not yet been tracked down to anything so specific that is causing random hangs and system crashes, though at least one can get into Windows itself (unlike the lucky AMD users.) Windows service packs causing mayhem and havoc is not a new phenomenon – indeed, AMD machines got hit with a similar bug back in 2000 when any machine running over 350 MHz crashed and burned after a new service pack was released – and we may wait a few weeks for all of the kinks to get sorted out.

You forgot. Make sure you pay 3 times more than what its really worth. Change your settings so even the user has to jump through hoops to get access to your files.

I would stay with the 32 bit. Seems the 64 bit has problems with some software just like xp. I would surff the kubuntu forums and see what problems they are having. I am almost sure they have a special forum over there just for the 64 bit. I almost put it on til I saw the issues the 64 bit had. Just decided to stay with the 32 bit. Sadly the pc world both windows and lynux are just not ready for 64 bit. Just my 2 cents

Not tryting to hijack your thread, but on the same subject, what are you guys using for spyware of late? I still use avast, but not sure what the best spyware programs of late are the best. Sure be glad to get the ol lady to use lynux more. Im working on her.

Not to be a smarty pants, but it was a good week. Your still around, things can be replaced, people can not. Glad your safe and sound. Sorry about the car.

On my lynux setup I run firefox 2. I use the kde desktop and kubuntu 8.04 hardy. I have seen how someone figured out how to add a second bookmark toolbar in a windows setup. Just wondering how to do that with lynux. I have plenty of screen. Think a second one right below the first would just be sweet and handy. Wish firefox would of allowed for that to begin with.

I gave it the whole slave drive. I just found opensuse to big a pain in the ass to install, and this coming from someone that has installed everything from windows 98 on up to vista. Was able to install ubuntu, maddrake and a couple others with out a problem. Kubuntu just up to this point seems ok. Runs fine now. Just a tip, if you want to back up lynix, ghost 14 works great. I have used it, tried it, and it works fine. Just gotta make sure to hit the option to show hidden systems. Thats just the fun of lynix. What works well on my setup, may hose yours. Plus I am just gonna follow the adivce of a long time lynix user. Try a few, then stick with one, learn it and in no time your system will be fine. Every "flavor" will have good and bad points. Trick is to set up your box for your own use. After playing with mandrake a few days, It is a nice system, imho it looks to much like windows. I want lynix on my slave to have a diffrent look and feel to it. So instead of jumping around, right or wrong, with the help of nortons ghost, I will just learn and understand ubuntu, or I use kubuntu. I love the kde desktop. have played with the new 4.0 kde desktop that came pre installed, not crazy about it, but its still beta, will see how it all plays out. I am kinda impressed with kubuntu forums. They have helped me tons making the switch from windows to lynix.
-
Can you even boot lynux with vista? I have seen few have issues with it.
-
Gee why do people HATE vista so much. Thats why im switching to lynix.

I gave opensuse a shot. Tried to install it on my slave drive. BIG MISTAKE!! It hosed my setup. When I tried it, it said unable to install because "windows has the drive marked as active ntfs" WTF?!?! I just took ubuntu off the slave. I had to reinstall kubuntu to get things right again. Hope they get that fixed in the new version.
-
Well, I gave up on ubuntu. It crashed on me for the last time. The hardy verson was just so misbehaved on my computer. I gave opensuse a shot. Umm.........That was just flipping horrid. I tried to put it on my slave drive and for whatever reason it just so messed up my computer BADDDD!!!!!! I put it on my slave drive, let it have the entire drive, formated, and opensuse said unable to install because windows had it taged as ntfs. WTF?? I just had ubuntu on it nothing else. Hope the new version comming is better. A BIG thank you to the poster that told me about mandrvia 2008. Insalled and all I can say is WOW!! Its so looks like windows. While I have just started with it, lots to learn, It just SMOKES. Puts in compiz and heck even enables the cube by default. I will forsure be recomending this one to others.

Its just a silly 'theme". Its in a "tar" file. I know the adept manager. Got that figured out and how to utilize it. The thing is I really wanna figure out how to do the command line install. I one of the last "hurdles" I need to become lots more comfortable using lynux on a full time basis. Been working on this hurdle for 2 or days. I THINK, there I go again, working without the right tools, anyway. I THINK I am somehow screwing up the path part of it. You know right click, properties, that should be the path I need. Its on my desktop, so the path would be "/home/tim/desktop
