Thats probally the most useful info I have seen anyplace yet on all the duals and quads. Had no idea the 2 duals on amd took a dump. Not surprised. Had no idea about the "nehalem". So if and when I do go for a new build. Which will be a couple of years yet. Think I will just stay with the dual if possible. Goodness only knows how it will all change by then. Or better yet, do some major looking around, make sure the cpu's are not gonna make another major change. I did not do that last time. I have the dual amd 4200 on xp. Its really nice. I am happy with it and it was top of the line at the time. I just hope the cpu's dont get to nuts. Ya know changing all the time to this or that. I did research the amd 4200 at the time, saw lots of good things, just did not find out if if the technology was gonna be switching soon. I do know the old debate of amd vs intel. IMHO its a coke or pepsi senerio.. Both sides will swear this is soooooo much better. I say find what fits your budget, research, and go for it. Rember with out protection on good power surge and its all gone. IM just a average user I guess. Some games. I do push mine at times. While I am sure I am dreaming, wonder if the new nehalem will still fit the the older motherboards or will all that have to be switched as well. Ah the times they are a changing.

Just wondering, ya happy with the quad?? I played with one computer that had it. Just I dont know, Not that impressed, I was probally expecting to much I guess. But you know how it is. Take a Clean single core computer up against a not so well maintained dual core computer, Wont notice much diffrence. I know amd is looking at going with 2 duals on the same mother board. That should be intresting. Not sure if the 2 dual cores on the same motherboard will happen, or even work out. While I may be wrong. Just seems like the quads, or even the 2 dual cores would have bottle neck issue. Could be wrong, but really data can only travel so fast. Kinda like have a car that will go 200 miles a hour and live in the midwest. No place you could get it that fast, for that long. The last, is microsoft smart enough to NOT release stuff that will mess up the timeing on the quads?? Well I call it timeing. it would be able to hit all 4 cores right instead of sending all the infor to one or 2 and skipping or forgetting the other 2. I still wonder about the duals, and I have one. I mean really trying to split data 4 ways and right. Im not so sure thats a good thing.

Wow , I wonder, How hard it would it be to put a copy of lynix on cd or dvd, With all the updates, Run it, conect to the net, and check your speeds. Does that make sense? I know you can run lynix right from the cd, or dvd. That would tell you if its software or hardware related. It sounds like its possible, but is it realistic? You could simply call the programm, connecton checker. Yea sounds stupid. You come up with something better. I just wonder, could it be done, and done for your average user? Or even not, make a disk, run to your friends, pop in the cd, check the connection speeds? Sure sounds like it would be possible. Will be intresting to see the responces. Who knows, maybe im nuts, maybe not possible. But sure sounds reasonable.

To deal with just this kind of stuff. Speed issues. If you can, put a fresh copy of xp on your computer, either a second harddrive, Or another partition. Update it. Leave it alone. Now with your perfect copy of xp, See how your speeds are if you hook that strait to your modem. This will make trouble shooting your connections issues tons easier, Especially with more than one computer hooked to your cable connection. I realize this may be extreme. But with you running 4 or 5 computers on the same connection, and probably will for years to come. This will just save you tons of time and work when you troubleshoot it. Now this may sound nuts. I run 2 hard drives, On my slave drive, I put on a fresh copy of xp, Update it, Then back it up to my c drive with norton ghost. If I start having connection issues, I use ghost, restore my slave, then check my connections. I always make sure my connection is fine and right before I back it up. I always use cablenut myself. I have been advising of late my friends and family and co workers this method. I even set it up for them. That way if they are having issues, and simple fixes are not doing the job. Restore that good copy, now how is it, Still bad, probably your modem, Get better? Then you need to back your stuff up, and worse comes to worse, Reinstall xp. Simply put, sometimes it just the best and easiest and quickest solution.

Sorry diehard. I have seen some geeked out long winded explinations in my day but that takes the cake. I fell asleep after the first 4 sentences. Its so poorley written, I have to wonder how this guy stayed awake and understood even what he was trying to say. Goodness. I mean no offense, I thank you for the effort. But that screwy thing just makes no sense. -
I finally broke down and bought some new harddrives. I have to dual 250 gig sygates. Which for me is tons plenty. I will partion both. I have googled and looked and stuff and for whaever reason its just not reaching through to me. The primary is a partion you can boot off from?? The Logical?? Clueless Extended?? Guessing would be a partion for just files?? I am a note junkie and keep lots of info incase I forget sutff. Its all organized and makes sense to me. I have nothing note wise on partions, So whoever explains it will be forever in my notes. I copy and paste into a notepad, Title the notepad so I know what it is. And whosh.......into my archive you go. Now don't you just feel special........

ninjageek replied to coolbuster2007's topic in General Discussion
Oh there will be plenty of support on the net for xp. Sure you can buy xp for sometime to come. If windows 7 goes the way vista has so far, Xp may be the os every one just continues to use wither microsoft likes it or not. There are still lots of users still using windows 98, and If ya poke around I am sure you can still buy a copy. -
Thanks starship that is exactly it. I was kinda close. Preciate it man.

Computer Freezes at motherboard logo screen
ninjageek replied to amc11890's topic in General Discussion
Couple Ideas, If you know the manufactor of your motherboard, download the drivers and reinstall. Lastly you may try to reflash your bios. If you decided to do this make sure to ask someone the best way to do it. Personally I have never done it, so I can offer no help, No worries these guys will step up and help if thats the route you decide to go. While I have no clue on the cost, maybe replace the motherboard battery first and see what happens. Start with the simple then work your way up. Goodness Have I learned that the hardway -

I just think to many people fear lynix. They are afraid of it being to geeky. Lynix has come a long way in turning itself into a more user friendly format. Has more of a windows feel to it. I see more people getting fed up with microsoft and giving it a shot.

Thank you very much, You sure have helped me out bunches of late, Greatly apreciate the effort. I found this web site yourself and many others may just like. With microsoft putting the breaks on auto patcher for windows xp, A geek needs something diffrent. I may of found it. http://www.heise-online.co.uk/security/Do-it-yourself-Service-Pack--/features/80682 You can make your own current update packs, handy for fresh installs of xp and vista. I have not tried it yet, I am working on figuring it out though. Hope someone finds this useful. Have a Nice day.

No this is not a bash on firefox. WIth opera all settings are stored in your profile. Bookmarks, skins. Everything. I run dual drives. I simply put the profile from the c drive into the profile of the d drive in opera and whatever changes are made with the browser, it affects both opera browsers on the master and slave drive. Can firefox do this, and what folder would I be looking for? Hope that makes sense.

Thank you mud. I been pokeing around and playing with this 64 bit my eyes were getting blury. This 64bit is like a step child of microsofts. I really like it. Its fast and stable. Right now I only use it on my slave drive, my slave is where I play all my games. If in a few months no problems I can forsure see putting it on my master drive. So far it has been able to run all the programs I use. I will say it is faster, games seem more behaved. keeping my fingers crossed.

I will be the first to admit I know NOTHING about networking computers together. Never done it. But someone asked me a intresting question. If one computer on a network gets infected, will it affect the other computers and the speeds they are able to achive on the internet??

I think that the way most internet connections were year say 5 years ago compared to know is pretty shocking. Things will get faster and cheeper. I live in a small town in the midwest. Im getting 8, and it was only 4 or 5 a couple of years ago. Seems while everything else is going up cell phones and internet connections continue to drop. For me. I pay 100 bucks a month, that gets me my internet and cable t.v. and 1 movie channel. My net is 45 a month and cable is 55 with a movie channel. Really not bad. Gas is through the roof and money is tight for everyone, So I like so many others use the net and cable to provide some of my entertanment.
