  1. Your firewall is picking it up, so that's a good sign. But it's not DoD, that's spoofed. And it's called a port scan. They're looking for vulnerabilites in your security. I used to get scanned, but you can pick up these pretty little programs that zap them back, just to say: "Hello, piss off."
  2. If you're looking for web proxies, here is a good list: http://www.kbcafe.com/iBLOGthere4iM/?guid=20060104123727 However, if you're using them as a defilter, then I would certainly be careful that you're not violating any policy that would get you into trouble. Especially with school....you could probably wait till you get home. But for educational purposes (since you say they don't teach you nothin'): You can also use Google: http://www.google.com/translate?langpair=en|en&u=www.testmy.net
  3. It should let you browse. Try this instead: -click start, click run -type msconfig and click ok -click the boot.ini tab, check the box for /safeboot and put a dot where it says with networking -click apply, click close, and restart when it says to When your PC restarts it should be in safe mode w/ networking. You should be able to bring up your browser. If so, try a speedtest. If not, dbl check your IP from the command prompt (ipconfig). To get back into normal mode: -click start, click run -type msconfig and click ok -remove the check from /safeboot -click apply, click close, and restart when it says to
  4. I think it may be a software conflict on your PC. Let's try booting into safe mode with networking, this will eliminate your startup items. Restart your PC and tap F8. When you see Windows Advance Options menu, you should be able to select safe mode with networking. Try running a speedtest. To get back to normal mode, just restart. If you can't get into safe mode with networking this way, there is another way. Question: which browser are you using? Have you tried testing a different one?
  5. Can you provide a traceroute please? From the command prompt: tracert testmy.net
  6. Welcome to the forum gradwell. Torrents are a bad example for showing your connection. They depend too much on the upload capabilites of the seeders, and also the limitations of the software itself. The download test shows that your speeds are very good (322 kB/s).
  7. Here are some tests hosted nearer to you that I'd like you to try: Sweden 1MB Sweden 5MB Germany 1MB Germany 5MB Try testing with your firewall on, and then with it off. This way you can see if/how much it is interfering with the test results.
  8. Do you have a firewall or browser extensions, or any other downloads that may be interfering with the test results?

  12. Botnets, or bot armies, are networks of computers called zombies which are controlled remotely and without authorization, and are used to perform illegal activity such as spamming and DoS attacks. Professor of computing and associate dean for undergraduate programs at Georgia Tech, Merrick Furst, performs an interview with CNN Technology regarding an extensive study he is conducting on botnets. 13. Actually I have noticed that. Celeron 700 in my old lappy. It would randomly make this snapping noise when it was really thinking.
  14. Its probably the Norton. Have her disable email scanning. You may need to delete and recreate the account.

  17. It could be wireless interference, EMI from an electrical device, or network congestion. Just keep an eye on what time of day things are better or worse, and what is happening in your house at that time. Ping us back if you have further questions or issues.
  18. try netstat -ano. This allows you to correlate the IP address and port to the process by the PID. Just make PID visible in the task manager and you're game.
  19. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=NVCR32.exe&btnG=Google+Search I would venture to say that it's nothing that you need. Got XP? Make a restore point, then delete it.
  20. :haha: true but they do the trick, and they're cheap as hell.
  21. I got bored, so I came up with this. I used tigerdirect.com. Gets you 400W PSU, 2.93 GHz Celeron, 1.5 GB RAM, 256 MB AGP8X vid card, 160 GB HDD, GB NIC, and a DVD+/-RW. Price tag says $522.94, but doesn't include $125 in rebates, so you're looking at $397.94. <edit> tweaked it a bit, so i had to put up another screenshot
  22. That's looking much better.
  23. Here's another to try.
  24. Which is 4052 Kbps. adiace, is that over your wireless connection? Are you able to run a direct connection to the modem and try test.bat again? I simply am trying to determine how much your router is influencing your speeds.
  25. Download this, and extract both files to the same directory. Then run the test.bat and post the log it creates.
