  1. Looks good, Dragonbreak. I imagine that the difficulty with the other file was that some software on your machine was having a hard time with the progress bar. This is typical of a firewall or popup blocker, and even some spyware.
  2. Were you downloading files while you ran the download speed test? Because that will greatly reduce your results. Make sure all firewalls, popup blockers, download clients, etc. etc. are shut down for the download test.

  7. Since you are on a router, I would say that chances are slim that it's an entry attempt from a hacker. Chances are some piece of software on your PC is making the connection, and the return attempt is being blocked. Most likely cause is spyware, but its possible that a trojan is the culprit. Try www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan to check. Otherwise, update all your AV/Anti-Spyware programs, and try hijackthis maybe.
  8. When you run ipconfig from the command prompt, does the connection-specific DNS suffix say rr.com? It may be the reverse DNS engine, or it may be software altering your IP info. (on a direct connection) if your IP address listed in ipconfig matches what you see from whatismyip.com then you're fine, it's an issue on this end.
  9. Got a router or firewall? Using a proxy? Scan for spyware? Clear cache and cookies? Try another browser?

  12. Yeah, see i'd be formatting and reinstalling OS as soon as i brought it home. Partition and set up dual boot, no better time.

  17. Nice job. Well done on a budget, that's talent. I agree with Swimmer, though, you could probably do away with the firewall. I'm assuming you're running 100BaseTX UTP, and using switches as repeaters throughout the building, like one per floor? How you workin that? What about software, how are you managing the network that way?
  18. Just to clarify, it should not cost you a dime for your ISP to send you a new modem if you are currently leasing the one you have from them.
  19. I doubt it is a NIC driver issue, because the NIC has no problem communicating to the router, and because the modem has difficulty with both router and NIC connections. It's very possible that the cause is a bad ethernet cable, or a bad port on the modem. Attenuation due to EMI is possible (too many electrical devices too close together). Devices should optimally be at least 6 feet apart. If replacing the ethernet cable at the modem, or spreading out your devices, do not work, I'd call your ISP for a new modem.
  20. Looks like there is some congestions on your ISP's network at 66.231.160.190 on the 5th hop. Other than that, things look ok. If the times at that IP don't seem to get better, I'd give your ISP a ring. Chances are there is a load being balanced on that node due to an outage (ie. fiber cut) or maintenance in another area.

  24. That's right. EMI creates interference with the signal in the cables, reduces quality and can cause packet loss. SNR at the modem looks good, so the disturbance is likely between modem and router. I would say that trogers has good advice in that you should relocate your modem and router away from your TV, and any other electrical devices, including each other.
  25. The speedtests are showing good speeds. Most often, when you cannot download files at speeds anywhere close to your cap, it is because of the server you are downloading from. Keep in mind that the server is uploading at a certain speed, and likely uploading the same file to other users. It is also possible that in the network between you and the server there is a bottleneck which restricts speed. There is also the physical distance from you to the server. It may also depend on the software you are using. There are a lot of factors. You may rarely see your actual download speed when dl'ing files over the net.
