Just a little input from me, Linux is what lead me to MAC OSX . Once you get into the unix system you realize the major differences.

My first thought would be there is dust loaded up in the heat sink, so the fan goes to max rpm, and the CPU overheats. Open her up and look see if there is a considerable amount of " stuff " caked on the CPU heatsink.

I myself do not have a satellite connection, but the general consensus is weather can, and does have an adverse effect on data transmission. If you want to read and write from OS to OS, then make sure you se the windows partition to FAT32. My guess is you have windows installed already ? You may be able to make another partition and set it to VFAT otherwise. Just make sure you use " GRUB " for the booatloader. It's alot easier if your not familiar.
