PeptoBloat Posted February 20, 2006 Author CID Share Posted February 20, 2006 what browser are you using also make sure your not using any accelerators No accelerators, using IE because I reformatted the hard drive and haven't reinstalled Firefox. More detailed system specs below. Windows XP Home Edition SP1, Intel P4 2.4 GHz, 768 MB RAM What's odd is that the results are inconsistent. For instance, I just retested and got: :::.. cholla Posted February 20, 2006 CID Share Posted February 20, 2006 PeptoBloat ;My answer is Dial-up can't cache the test at the main site .So thats the speed it detected.I think some of the accelerators ISP use could account for the test showing this speed.ROM_DOS is an exception we never could figure out the exact reason his speed on dial-up was so fast. As far as the official posisition from the phone companies & the FCC the best you can get is 53.3 Kbps. The main way to tell is your web surfing good .How do pages load fast or slow. Another way to test is find a DL somewhere thats not a test (Like 8MB software) & see what your Windows DL window says your speed is. Those are a couple of ways to see if the test is giving you an accurat result of your speed. I agree uploads with dial-up stink.
PeptoBloat Posted February 20, 2006 Author CID Share Posted February 20, 2006 Pages are fairly fast, although I sometimes get horrible speeds. Will check DL speed later.

PeptoBloat Posted February 20, 2006 Author CID Share Posted February 20, 2006 No double modems, not sure of the distance(what's a good site for this?), just using ROM-DOS's recommended CableNut settings. As for the DL speed test, a 326kb(I think) file gave me about 5.28kb/sec. First download test of the day: :::.. cholla Posted February 20, 2006 CID Share Posted February 20, 2006 PeptoBloat: Heres a link to an online distance calculator. http://www.dslreports.com/prequal/distance The best way is to call your telephone company & ask. The 5.28kB/sec is 43kbps.Which is probably closer to your actual speed. You can actually time the DL yourself & divide to see if it matches. In other words the 326kB DL should have taken 61.75 sec to DL at 5.28kB/sec. Try a larger DL like 7 to 10 MB & let it DL completly. You don't have to keep it just DL it to your Temp file & delete it after the DL.I think on a large DL you will see the speed drop even slower. But this is a good indication of your actual DL speed .When the test results are too fast. PeptoBloat Posted February 20, 2006 Author CID Share Posted February 20, 2006 Cholla, your link didn't really help because it says there's no estimate. Guess I'll have to call later. I will reply when 8.81MB download finishes. EDIT: DL is done. 8.81MB file size, downloaded in 30 min 6 sec, averaging 4.5 to 5 kbps.
Roco Posted February 21, 2006 CID Share Posted February 21, 2006 hi pepotobloatb 4.6-5 Kbps sounds about right for dial up 56k. try downloading sp1 from microsoft site, and I can recommend "TICK" from really affective.com , for on screen down load speed , any many other uses, Costs Etc. been on 56k. dial up fir 4 years, Finlay got 256k. broad band thanks for "TICKS" cost analysis
cholla Posted February 22, 2006 CID Share Posted February 22, 2006 PeptoBloat ;your Windows DL speed is fairly accurate. To do the math. 8.81MB is 9021.44KB is 9237954.56 bytes is 73903636.48 bits 30 minutes 6 Seconds =1806 seconds 9021.44 divided by1806 =4.99 so Your speed for the DL would be 4.99kB/sec.
