richcornucopia Posted April 30, 2006 CID Share Posted April 30, 2006 If you have a router a software firewall isn't necessary, but a good idea anyway. I use avast and sygate and am very happy with both.

mudmanc4 Posted May 1, 2006 CID Share Posted May 1, 2006 Sorry people, you need a hardware firewall!!!!!!!!!!! As well as a software firewall , in my opinion, if for nothing else the software one will advise you of outgoing , this can be VERY important , if you value your privacy. I know these are relativly easy to bypass, this is what the hardware will , if configured properly will prevent!

BTW If you have an always on connection, you may not ever "get anything" , but you could be used as a weapon, or host and never know it . Blunted 2 Posted May 1, 2006 CID Share Posted May 1, 2006 if you have it setup right the software can be just as good and it doesnt just notify you of outgoing it stops what you want it to. why dont you try sunbelt kerio and i bet you will change your mind. Thanks , I'll try this. I just feel that a piece of physical hardware/ applied W/ softwar offers much more controll, Just as anything , take away the controll, and you have chaos! Blunted 2 Posted May 1, 2006 CID Share Posted May 1, 2006 well put it this way, if you know what your doing nothing will ever get in if you dont want it to but even a hardware firewall can be bad if you dont know what your doing. right? so it goes both ways but both can be affective or not. organ_shifter Posted May 1, 2006 CID Share Posted May 1, 2006 Yeah, I have Nvidia's hardware firewall, but I notice that my software solution does everything I need as well. It monitors outgoing/incoming connections, applicatons which are requesting access to the internet, hidden apps trying to gain internet access through other programs, etc. Using both hardware & software firewalls together works very well though. I use them both when I'm browsing through dangerous zones. Quote With all the protection i can muster . still got whacked with a floating banner , still recon. a backup is the ultimate protection, I forgot to mention that I also use a full time spyware/adware solution. It'll take care of those banners, popups, flash, etc. This program is very nice and gets the job done. It replaced PopUpCop which I used for years. Additional Spyware/Adware Protection: Super Ad Blocker 3.
