Stay Away From StarBand

Starband will not be losing the transponder on amc4.

Doesn't the lease on that transponder expire on March 31?

Things on T 7 are getting slower.

I just downloaded Adobe Acrobat reader 7.0 and the throughput was in the 200 to 250 Kbps range.

Not very good for after midnight downloading.

Port 119 is now throttled on T 7 too.

Are things getting shilly in here?

Our showroom account is running around 200 Kbps and the access to a NNTP site is spanked back to about 25 Kbps.  Really crappy considering it was running in the 500's with no problem with newsgroups a few weeks ago after the repoint.  They said they were to "balance the load" with additional transponder space that was yet to be turned on (that was last Thursday) and said NNTP service might suffer even more since "most people want web browsing" and they could send the extra  bandwidth saved to those purposes...  I'm getting ready to call our dealer direct department about this "load balancing" timeline and to complain about NNTP access...

As I predicted, performance on T 7 has continued to deteriorate.

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 381 Kbps about 0.4 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB)

Download Speed is:: 46 kB/s

Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/

Test Time:: Mon Apr 4 15:16:16 EDT 2005

Bottom Line:: 7X faster than 56K 1MB download in 22.26 sec

Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 53.36 % of your hosts average (80.22)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-2B9QW0S6Y

Is this worth $90.00 per month?

Actual http performance is running about 1.4 K on all sites.

The service is so overloaded it is close to unusable.

I don't think I will be paying the bill this month.

Sux that T7 isnt much better.  I'm still on GE4, and will continue to be till I decide to end my relationship with Starband when I get my wireless venture off the ground again.  I've been out of contract for two years now..just been be-bopping along.  This is the best out of 4 back to back tests:

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 187 Kbps about 0.2 Mbps (tested with 579 kB)

Download Speed is:: 23 kB/s

Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/

Test Time:: Tue Apr 05 2005 09:39:46 GMT-0400 (Eastern Daylight Time)

Bottom Line:: 3X faster than 56K 1MB download in 44.52 sec

Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 33.75 % of your hosts average (starband.net)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-S0CTU342A

Speeds have been averaging 190-250kbps for the last couple of weeks now.

I've got no problem with the slow speeds.. I just have a problem with the tremendous lack of communication on Starband's part.  Rumors fly, but theres never any word on whats true.  I'd still recommend SB over DWay any day..

There is a rumor going around that DishNetwork is just a few months away from rolling out a new satellite internet service.

I'm thinking that SB is just a few months away from making an appearance on the top of the list at F*ed Company dot com.

Vern, Uncle Charlie has been saying that for at least 3 years that I know of.  Back when Dish and SB had a cooperative agreement and were co-selling each others' services, there was talk of them merging.  Then the honeymoon fell apart, the divorce dragged on [the combined SB/Dish 500 LNB is still available], and Charlie 'chatted' about it a few times, 'coming soon' he kept saying.  In fact that's why I waited so long to go SB, I was waiting to see what Dish was going to do, if anything. They seem to be more focused on ESPN, HDTV and 'Locals" than anything else.

If they do make a move, I don't know if they'll buy SB or start fresh.  Who knows, maybe WB will be for sale by then.

There hasn't been any formal announcement from DN yet but Charlie said on last month's charlie chat that the modems were in phase 3 testing, whatever that means.

I do know that it won't be connected in any way with SB.

2 months ago Spacenet bought out the remaing shares of SB and now owns it all.

Service quality has continued on it's steady downhill slide so I have to assume that Spacenet is not interested in providing residential VSAT service.

I really wish now that I had chose DW instead of SB.

WB will have the same problems as Voom; trying to compete in an existing market as an unknown startup.

It will take several thousand subscribers within the first few months to make them viable.

They have also have numerous delays; I first saw their site over a year ago and it seems they were claiming to be ready to start in early 2004.  Last I looked, they were looking at FQ 2005, which has come and gone, now I hear mid 2005.

I'm beginning to have doubts as to how serious a contender they will be.

And their pricing isn't that great.

I do not care whom you get your service from.

I support both and as of lately I have a preference to starband.

For the most I do not have to call tech support and talk to the $5.00 per hour flunkies whom is instructed to not tell me that THE SYSTEM IS DOWN.

I punched in 3 today and they all went flawless. 2 on TELSATT77 and 1 on GE4. Not one problem. CVACS  gave me the worst reading of 1.2 on a crosspole and everyone activated on the first try.

Longest call to CVACS was 4.2 Min's.

Although HNS may be the biggest with 7 birds in the air and sband plugging along like they are can actually make a effort to not have to make a technician look like an idiot having to call one of there stupid support techs, request a transfer to NOC, and then have to deal with the second stupidest idiot that does not have the authority to tell you that the system is down.

WHAT A LOAD OF TRIPE.

If you do not know what tripe is look it up on the net.

If there was anyone to complain about there internet service PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

QUIT BEING A SHEEP AND TAKING YOUR ANNUAL SHEARING AND MAKE IT AN EFFORT TO MAKE YOU INTERNET PROVIDER GIVE YOU A GOOD SERVICE  minus those things that you can not control.

I use cable because I can get that.

DSL sucks.

Dial up was 49.33333333333.

I may put it in for you but I will advise anyone with any alternative to seriously consider all alternatives.

I am hoping to soon join all of those, like you, for I need 120  acres out in gods country where I can take my oat burning horses out for a quick blast around the property.

Bill is due tomorrow.

I still haven't decided whether or not I will pay the bill this month.

The same thing happened last month.

A few days before the bill was due, service quality dramaticlly increased and a day or two after paying it things went to crap again and stayed that way for 97 % of the billing period.

As for complaining:

I am posting about my Starband experience here in this forum in hopes of providing others who are considering signing up for their service with an honest description of what they can expect from it before they commit to spending $500.00 to $900.00 for the dish, modem, and install and most important, sign a contract with SB.

I'm with you Vern.  Too bad the three people that SATTECH installed yesterday apparently had not read this forum or had access to Starband.general newsgroup.  The Only positive comments I've seen in regards to Starband over the last 5 months have been from those not using it.  I'd like it too if I could install three everyday (assuming I get paid) and then could go home and use my cable modem.  I would definitely right now gladly choose dial-up service over Starband if I had access to it.  For browsing the internet dial-up is actually faster.  Newsgroups on Starband is throttled to the point that it is slower than dial-up.  The only place that Starband is faster on right now is if I were to download a file over the the web.  Since that is seldom done, Starband is not worth the $64.95 a month I am paying.
