aria.one Posted August 31, 2010 CID Share Posted August 31, 2010 Hello guys and girls,Im new here as a registered user, but used the site to test my broadband speed long time before..but just recently I realised one thing, and made me to register to be able to ask you for help..My question is about your speed test, specifically the download one. Here you can see in my profile my average speed after testing, which is about 3.5Mb.most of the time.what is strange is,that if I test my speed on any other and I mean literally any, site, the resluts are about 9.5Mb..Im with virgin broadband at up to 10Mb..can you please tell me what is going on? I would not hesitate to trust your sites result in first place, but its just alone against any other site Ive tried...thanks in advance for any help
CA3LE Posted August 31, 2010 CID Share Posted August 31, 2010 It's most likely because you're in the UK. I should be adding a UK and Asia server by the end of the year. My bandwidth provider has extensive peering to the UK so the tests here will still give you a very good idea what your speeds are to most servers (since many major sites are hosted in the US). When the data has to travel nearly 6000 miles, across the ocean... over about 30 hops (I pulled a trace on your IP) you'll never be able to max out. Unlike some other test sites testmy.net does not rely on donated servers. For quality control I like to maintain everything myself. But because of that fact there is a heavy price that I have to pay to host such servers. I recently upgraded the main server, it's way over powered.. just how I like it. I just need to get the extra money together to pick up a few more servers. I'll most likely be picking up a European server first. My host has a datacenter in London so that's most likely where it will be hosted... I should have that one nailed down in the next 30-60 days, so there's something to look forward to. Keep checking back, once that's up and running it will be very apparent... notices will be shown to all users that can benefit from that server and traffic will eventually be automatically routed to the closest server to the end user. planetleomars

CA3LE Posted August 31, 2010 CID Share Posted August 31, 2010 I just contacted my account rep with my host. Depending on the deal we work out it may be up even sooner. planetleomars and aria.one
RTB Posted September 1, 2010 CID Share Posted September 1, 2010 In related news, the 1 GB download test is coming. Overkill, but that's just how CA3LE like it. I think you can max out no matter the distance, it just takes tweaking of the receive window, and maybe some other values.
aria.one Posted September 1, 2010 Author CID Share Posted September 1, 2010 do you mean from my side?

What setings do YOU use to max out your connection over seas? -D ... 1GB test --- that could happen sooner than you might imagine.

That's one wrong guess And that comment was basically from the days I had access to a 8/1 connection which I could max out to here. Been ages since I last tweaked that stuff too. As for the settings, it was VanBurens stuff, along with some random calculator for the exact rwin depending on maximum theoretical download speed and avg ping to download sites. Oh look, I'm still an inactive moderator while active on the forum. I guess CA3LE noticed my lazyness.

CA3LE Posted September 3, 2010 CID Share Posted September 3, 2010 A 1GB test might be a nice feature. Maybe that will be a future premium account feature... we'll have to see 'bout that The program is already setup to test with ANY possible file size, go ahead... give it a try. https://testmy.net/dl-{FILESIZE-in-KB} or https://testmy.net/dl-{FILESIZE-in-MB}MB so for instance https://testmy.net/dl-15360 or https://testmy.net/dl-15MB[/code] I've actually already tested it with 1GB before, but I have it limited to 100MB right now. The upload test doesn't currently have the resources built into it yet to serve like that but it will very soon. As soon as I have it finished I'll be adding the option for users to enter their own test size. 100KB to 100MB. - D

RTB is in the UK ? he might be a close neighbour ? , btw my speed tests to Holland are crap, but TMN USA are with 17 hops . 12 are within the UK , may be Rado's problem , it seems to depend on the ISP routing , any news on the UK testing site , we ain't got much avalible at the moment ,
CA3LE Posted September 22, 2010 CID Share Posted September 22, 2010 I'm still working on the additional servers guys... my schedule with that fell behind because of an emergency root canal I had to get. First, I was in pain... went to the dentist... had to get a referral to an Endodontist... of course by then it was the weekend. Finally got in Wednesday... NOW I have to go back to my primary Dentist to get my permanent filling. It's a referral racket! My last dentist did everything... but now I'm having to get some of his work redone. So I guess having broad knowledge isn't always a good thing. I'm going to stick with specialists from now on, I seriously didn't feel a thing. The other root canals I've had were torturous! I'm going to check again tomorrow and see if this host I've been trying to get servers with has anything in stock yet. They keep selling out before I can grab anything. -- wish me luck! VinceEdwards Posted October 13, 2010 CID Share Posted October 13, 2010 Hi Rado, I'm a fellow Brit on Virgin Media 200/16Mb. Notice how the latency rocketed at step 11. That must have been the Atlantic / Texas hop. There is no chance of a connection max out from over here. My connection occasionally hits the 200Mb download max on speedtest.net and VM.net, but on testmy.net the most I have got is 30Mb. So, it's good to hear that a server for testmy.net may be set up in London soon. Even so that is no guarantee that your results will look any better. For instance, if you test your speed at Thinkbroadband you will not get an accurate result for Virgin Media, because the VM link to the TBB server is poor. The TBB server can test up to and beyond 200Mb, but I have never got better than 32Mb. Try the test server at vmspeed.com You might get a more accurate result. I got this just now. Last Result: Download Speed: 186860 kbps (23357.5 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 16518 kbps (2064.8 KB/sec transfer rate) Latency: 5 ms 13 October 2010 12:58:37 Virgin Media 200Mbps See you around! CA3LE Posted January 30, 2011 CID Share Posted January 30, 2011 Hi, What happens to the files downloaded to the computer or mobile device after the test. On an iPad am I accumulating test debris? Thanks The device is told in multiple ways to not cache any information from the test but I can't really guarantee that's always the case. Sometimes it can depend on your setup. Certain software can force the browser to ignore what I tell it to do from my end. But, for most people, nearly everyone... no, you are not cluttering your computer what-so-ever when you test here. Only cookies, CSS and images should remain in your cache... just like any other website you visit. Good Question... Happy Testing! - CA3LE
