Thanks again VanBuran: I will contact my ISP .Heres a definition of POP I copied for those like me who didn't know exactly what it was.2) Short for point of presence, an access point to the Internet. ISPs have typically multiple POPs. A point of presence is a physical location, either part of the facilities of a telecommunications provider that the ISP rents or a separate location from the telecommunications provider, that houses servers, routers, ATM switches and digital/analog call aggregators. If this isn't exactly correct I did copy it not write it myself. Cholla

hi VanBuran: I only took this test for fun.How would I do a test from my local POP I will try that to.Just don't know how. Thanks Cholla hi Microwave: I do post tests from this site sometimes till I think some get tired of seeing them I've slowed down a little on this.I already consider testmy, net the most accurate test I have found. The others are fun when you have the time. Thanks VanBuran that probably explains the better speed some where the data is being compressed.I doubt that my modem or computer is capable of doing this.It would have to be my ISP.If they are & not charging me for it I have no complaints. :)Cholla

Hi speedy final: I should be lucky enough to have your speed. I went to the test site on your link these are my test results I only coppied the stats. It takes up less space & I'm not sure I can do a copy like you did mines lust copy & paste.I got a program from the reverend I am going to install to see if I can make better copies when I want to.I don't know why it says connection class 128K I only have 56K regular dial-up & have already been accused of faking my speed this morningat a different post. :cool:Cholla Connection Class : 128K download start time: 1105903717940 download end time: 1105903727930 download time: 9.99 download size in thousands of bytes: 100 estimated line speed (K bits per second): 84.1 estimated line speed (K bytes data per second): 8 Edit:I added it to my favorites so I could try it again later to see if the results change.

Hi VanBuran: could you explain the TCP overhead to me.I'm still learning about the tech stuff. If my ISP is compressing it some way they are doing it for free & they don't advertise it.From my end I have a very simple older IBM computer with an internal controlerless modem on windows 98 se.The tweaks & this isp have given me this speed. As you know I tested slower at your test site in Sweden the test was larger & dial-up does slow down on larger test.. hi wingzero I went to my member stats but I didn't see any way you could see them without a link like on the one I posted. That only lets you see that test as far as I know maybe Van can tell us if this is correct.I did post another test in the guest book at VanBuran's

Heh wingzero2309: I don't know how to prove I a'm just on regular dial-up.I do not always get this speed but do a lot of the time. All I can tell you is I pay $9.99 for my service I don't know of any ISP that gives you accelerated service for that. This is not the only test I have done at this speed. I don't know if you can look at my other tests here taken over several days.I have no explaination for why I get better speed than I should other than my system is tweaked . Cholla

hi reverend : I don't know if better grounding would attract lightning to a dish.Maybe if the dish was the tallest object in the area.Even then at least the good grounding gives the lighting a path to go.Better to melt your ground wires than to come along the coax and decide the one at the computer is the best ground rod it can find.I don't have any experence with a satellite dish other than for TV but I'm betting a direct lightening strike causes enough damage to to send you looking for a new dish even if you tried to insulate it instead of ground it,The coax is probably grounded to earth some way whatever the system you use unless you have purposly insulated it. Through the house electrical wiring if nowhere else .Even on an old 2 wire AC electrical system the common runs directly to earth ground this is the wire that runs from the meter to the ground rod .The only way around this would be a system ran completely on batteries. Cholla

hi lance49726: It's nearly impossible to ground something too good. Most of the time when it is not done as well or better than it has to be is cost.I don't have satellite so I don't know how much better grounding would increase performance on satellite.I have dial-up & I used a 6 ft copper over steel ground rod & conected a 10 gauge solid copper wire to my NID .This helped the phones & the computer. The phone company had it grounded to my outside water faucet. So spend the little extra on good grounding at least on your own system. MISINFORMATION - And why I did it !!!!
cholla replied to The Reverend's topic in HughesNet (DIRECWAY)
Hi reverend; Thought I would quote John Wayne as close as I can remember it." It's not always the man who draws fastest that wins the gunfight it's the one willing to draw aim.shoot & kill the other man".Looks like they drew fastest now you need to take aim & shoot to kill.Thats metaphorically speaking of course.Anyone that attacks you with their computer deserves what ever you can do to them in return. Hello are there any other members on regular dial-up.I tried a poll & got very little response. As a matter of fact I would like to get that thread in Help!with the forum deleted the response was so poor.So if there are any other members at testmy.net on regular dial-up post some of your test scores here no matter how slow.If the response is too large CA3LE can just lock this thread.I don't think the response will be that many.If I am the lone member of the forum on dial-up then. Hi VanBuran: there are very few settings that are already in the manual settings.About 6
-
Hi VanBuran: I downloaded the cablenut & installed it as far as its .setup.exe so I could look at the read me ;then I checked the manual settings but did not save it .Then I checked out my registry .Just installing cablenut wiped out all the tweaks I had in the MSTCP & put what it wanted there. It might have put settings like Tcp1323Opts back in if I had given it the chance I decided not to.I didn't like the fact that it made changes to my registry before I could look at its manual settings & set what I wanted it to change.Uninstalling it even before going any farther it did not return the registry to its previous settings. This was caused only by the setup.exe .Thankfully I had my registry backed up & scanreg restore saved me. So cablenut is not for me. Cholla
-
hi VanBuran: Cablenut put some of its settings in the registry that were not there like BSDUrgent that wasn't there before so I must have saved it to the registry. It has been long enough that I can't say for sure.Since I no longer have the setup.exe for cablenut in my system I can't check this out but I remember there was something in the read me text or help about limited testing on dial-up with windows 98.This could have changed with a more current version of cablenut. hi VanBuran: maybe I had too old of a version or the one I downloaded was defective. I know it did not add the "GlobalMaxTCPWindoSize" setting to my registry. This was not even in the registry until I added it.After I found this tweak on the web & tried it.I do not use every tweak I find & would give others the same advice .doing that can crash your system I found this out the hard way.Since my system is working well I probably won't use cablenut but to those who want to use it go for it I admit the problem could have been me. heh CA3LE: do what ever you need to to keep testmy, net working at its best. Get rid of whats seldom used& keep what is used the most .For now I am going to vote for 1 month . Cholla

hi reverend: I learned to drive in a chevy but switched to ford a long time ago so here are a couple more for ford bad & good. Cholla FORD fix or repair daily first on race day

hi VanBuran: I like both ways I tried cablenut I didn't like the way it worked in my system so I uninstalled it.It might work great on dsl or cable.Probably why the site is now called dslnuts

This is how my Windows 98 SE is tweaked. You need to determine what RWIN ,MTU,&MSS your OS needs to use .Then you can add them to your registry .If you don't know how to get these values you should probably leave your registry alone until you do. First backup your system before tweaking so you can restore it if the tweaks do not work for you. I take no responsibility for your system if it crashes. These tweaks will allow you to make some adjustments to your system if you want to do it yourself. There are programs that will do this for you.If you use one of these this will allow you to see if the program made these adjustments to your registry. If you don't like the adjustment a program made you can change it.The program may back if you don't make adjustments to the program you are using to automatically make the adjustments for you. Some allow ajustments some do not.Since I can't know what you have installed you will have to decide what it will take for your OS to keep the settings you want.

hi reverend: thanks for the effort the url didn't work I got the old can't find page.So I used my ms search typed in just irfanveiw it came up with a list of places to download I tried the one that looked like the home page it did the can't find too. Then I went to the download that cnet had it worked fine.I just saved it for now I will load it later to see how it works.Super cool to play for the Grand Ole Opry I 'm not a musiciam myself but I play a mean stereo.I mostly listen to rock but being a native Texan I have listened to some country all my life.Even went to see aWillie Nelson concert I saw A Johnny Cash one too his back-up were the Stattler Brothers doing their new song "Counting Flowers on the Wall" at least it was new then I was 8 or 9 years old I think.I also chauffeured for ZZ Top at a concert here.We had an 18 inch snow the night of the concert .Riding in it kind of freaked those east Texas boys out.I knew a pretty young lady that worked for the promoter is how I got to do this got paid $50.00 & saw the concert for free with a backstage pass. :cool:Thanks again Cholla

heh reverend : thanks for the trouble to try to look for the Freeware I always like that price when I can get it.I just got my first computer last April 2004 it is pretty low tech compared to yours. Its a refurbished IBM with windows 98 se so if the freeware won't work in this os no need to go tothe trouble just for me .A post for others would be good if this freeware only is for more up to date os.I run into this a lot with windows 98 se.It is a good program to learn on .Right now I barley know a .bmp from a .jpg but I'm a pretty fast learner.I started kind of late with computers.Actually this is not my first computer I did have & still do have a Commedore 64.Some may not like the old games but the old 64 has a blackjack program better than any I've seen.I still hook it up & play it once in awhile.I also have an old Matell Intelevision game If you have never seen one of these it was the cutting edge in electronic games when I bought it I think that was in the late 70's.Its joystick is a disk direction control with a 10 key pad you put the card for the individual game in a slot in front of the 10 keys .Thats just a plastic card the game uses cartriges. You talked about the XIT in Dalhart said you played there .I guess in a cw band Pretty big party there only went a couple of times .I guess when its close you ignore good stuff.I prefer PBR & Extreme bull PRCA to just regular rodeo . But I did go to the PRCA finals 1 year when thet were in OK City. Thanks Cholla

Heh CA3LE & resopalrabotnick: I know about the newer deisels just thought the Pinto conversion this book on pinto had was good.specially since it was done about 1975 when gas was much cheaper. As for hybrids they've come a long way but still have a long way to go.Right now there about like having a Commadore 128 pc a little better than a Commedor 64 but I don't think I want to try to get on the web with either one if that was even possible.Feel the same way about hybrid cars. The real advance in them will be when they develope a light weight weight weight super battery that can be charged quickly & have a 400 mile range at 70mph.then they can just make the car electric all the way.I look for the petroleum industry to keep this type of battery from being developed or we would have one already. Cholla

heh resopalrabotnick: right on the deisel I don't have a deisel vehicle but the are good.Read about someone transplanting a chrysler nissan industrial 4 cyl deisel into a Pinto( the car not the horse ) hooked to a 5-speed manual .it said the Pinto got 75mpg.My 4 cyl gas doesn't even come close to this mpg.The only drawback to the deisel is the smell up above it in a semi you don't notice it much in a car you can. heh bigw: the clutch definately costs more to replace than a fluid change in an automatic.A better comparison would be cost of clutch r&r to torque converter r&r. Because it cost even less to change the gear oil in a manual than the filter & fluid in an automatic. Cholla
