  1. there are multi WAN routers now, and besides, don't always suggest windows solutions only ok people? Linux has multi WAN abilities, WAY more so then Win2kAs anyhow, yes it's possible, but why, there are 6 meg lines now that would be cheaper then two 2meg lines. SUSE Linux CE for linux solution... http://www.edimax.com/html/english/products/PRI682.htm
  2. OR THEN AGAIN, its because your IN IRAQ!!!! ok i had to edit it, that was mean, im thinking line quality is bad over there, SatCom and Scycom prbbly week. im thinking, man, your in a third world country. No telling whats jamming your signals, maybe even that timer on that "dirtybomb" down the street. Or the fact a bullet grazed your cable node/ POTS NID. are u on dial up? cable? dsl? ads? satallite.. *HUB: im sure you probably are using hubs there, crazy... that's another reason, RAW bandwidth divided by users, maybe your getting what you should. im thinking, go into msconfig, disable a buncha stuff, u might be able to get some upload going, check for spyware/malware etc.. then u can email family and check back here in between suicide bombings and what not holy crap get out of there ahahhaa.
  3. registry edit, start run, regedit, edit this to get rid of IE, don't do it if u have never ran regedit, or don't understand structured trees.
  4. The only thing i can add to your list Netmasta, is that if you get a SELF install kit, using the cd even for ethernet will be REQUIRED!! there is a way around this, if u don't want all that JUNK installed.. or if you're paranoid like me... contact tech, tell them the cd is stuck in a "loop" and u cannot use it to install, and that you are using ETHERNET, they should ask you for your modems mac address, which is on a sticker on the modem, and then wallah your online without the registration cd, and the somethingware that the cd installs... self install kit is the way to go, no reason for a tech to come, plug in modem, plug in ethernet, release renew ip, u should be on, if u don't want to install comcasts software and browser hijack, then contact tech as i have suggested.

  6. OK, i usually don't brag about an ISP, i've had many in the past 16 years, from dial up, to dsl, and now cable, which i was skeptic about for several years, because i worked in tech support for a local adsl ISP, i think they had me brainwashed! anyhow. I got comcasts standard internet, WOW, great speeds for a few days, then spent 3 months fighting packet loss, several techs coming out, and then supervisors sweeping lines, etc.. only to find out, there wasn't a ground wire on the rack in a "headend". (magical place where fiber meets coaxial meets racks of channels and a linksys router... no sh1bby.) this got fixed, i was soooo happy. I usually don't call tech support, but one day, i was going to change a LOT of hardware, and operating systems, didn't know if they needed to do a "MAC search and destroy" seeing how as MY hardware would have all new mac adresses, (modem would remain the same, nice OLDER surfboard), the tech asked if i was still having packet loss, i said no, no mac adress search and destroy needed, then, as a very friendly tech does, he asks if i was a gamer, i said YES, of course, i also volunteered the info that i liked to RUN gaming servers, and i like to serve files.. (he couldn't talk about that aspect of it) but then, he says, we just started a new service today.. 6800/768, since u have had all this issue, would u like me to switch u.. im like OF COURSE!!!, he told me it would cost $10 bux a month extra, but, he could load me the bootfile to my modem IMMEDIATELY, they werent supposed to until the following day, but five minutes later, my modem reboots, i check it's status, it's loading new bootfile, i come to testmy.net, im running on a 6Mbps line, needless to say, i told the tech he was my new best friend, gave him my gaming server ip address, (we shared the same liking for "Day of Defeat") and i lived and loved EVERY DAY SINCE.. i have had NO issue paying the xtra money, i have had NOT ONE outage or technical issue. and i anticipate the upcoming 14000/2000 coming in a month, im already listed for a "supervisor call back" the day they can release it. now, how to get to that bootfile!!!! LOL J/K!!!! I would happily suggest ComCast to any family member, or friend, and to get the 6Meg package gamer or no gamer.. it's just simply worth it, especially in homes where the "kids" have pc's of their own also.
  7. u MIGHT need to update your routers firmware, and then see if your STILL losing packets before you call your ISP. Be sure you familiarize yourself with your router, and how to flash it's firmware. Some routers have it on their "configuration" panel, within the routers firmware address, (usually 192.168.1.1) look for "update firmware" other then making sure all your filters/barrel connecters are in tact.. this would be your only other choice.. then, u might want to request a "homerun" if it's an ongoing problem. homerun = from node to modem, nothing in between, nothing split off of, like tv or voip phone, good luck getting what you pay for!
  8. yeah that's still better then my current package.. i've got clients to feed bandwidth too, servers to run, and stuff to upload/download etc...etc...etc...etc...
  9. here is todays, what i like about this connection, is the consistency, and the fact i've had the same IP for like a year or better. :::.. 10. those links in that post were valid, however it takes some research before u just choose a flavor, http://www.linux.org/dist/ start there.
  11. i have really had to scale everything back in a major way to get to 67MB's xp looks like NT, NO desktop background, set to black, no active desktop, only see the time in the taskbar. I also keep a fresh update/scan for all malware, spyware, etc, and keep my cache/trash on the pc to a minimum. NONE Of this is automated, i tend to do it all first thing when i get on the pc daily, then proceed with my entertainment. Also, on my computers properties, in the performance section, disable all the stuff that is unnecessary, like animated page shifts, translucent drag and drop, who needs that, unless your an eye candy junky. I have had a 15% increase in my FPS during gaming, 10% less load on the processor, and a CONSIDERABLE drop in memory usage. alot of the virus/firewall stuff is on my slackware server, so it's before the client, so i don't have to have stuff such as zonealarm or NLS running. I have virus protection, just not in real time, or what not, i know how to get a virus if i want one, simple to task to scan, and update definitions, anyhow, again, there is antivirus on my slackware server. I just do silly eccentric things because i have 24 hours a day to waste, and need a challenge.
  12. i would ALMOST move to the UK, just to get this IE'less version of windows, and OMG to get windows messenger service gone!!!! if it weren't for things like that, i would never use linux, however, because of things like that, im thankful i have been using linux, besides, i haven't found ONE thing i can't do on linux FREE, that microsoft and it's software want hundreds of dollars for. anyways, i wish i had a MEGABIT upload.. when Comcast gets the 14000/4000 in my area, im spending the extra ten bux a month.
  13. anything more then that card, or really even the Nvidia Geforce 4 ti 4600 would be like "Putting nos in a pinto". with the machine u r workin with. like, putting ultra low profile tires on an 18 wheeler. like, putting saddlebags on a katana. like, putting kind bud, in a blunt.
  14. msconfig startup entries should NOT affect any of your svchosts. msconfig startup entries are simply programs that will start as windows loads and starts per YOUR profile. It takes toying with .ini files on msconfig to affect your services, In the future, you should only enable/disable stuff on the "startup" tab, on msconfig. I keep my startup tab COMPLETELY empty. NOTHING starts up. WinXP sits and runs idle at about 67MB's of page, instead of about 200. I also have the "performance" settings at optimal performance and this helps.

  18. Yeah i am NOT in the UK, and no, more has been done then JUST deleting "icons". besides, the windows machine is for gaming only. Gentoo runs on all of the other machines.
  19. hmm, no it's mabs... it's available on irc
  20. it's software, and no it's not a link, find it and try it.
  21. man wish the states used the euro, so much more worth the the USD.

  23. coz u go in and remove it, and every instance of it, and everything in the registry that has to do with it. what need is there for msie?
  24. whoa, im interested in comcasts 14/4, im currently on their 6800/768 connection, not bad for 55bux a month AFTER The promo. I truly have NO need for this connection type or speed, it's just a crutch, it's nice to know the bandwidth is there. I have played with running gaming servers for Half Life: Counterstrike and HL2 Counterstrike: SOURCE, and Half Life DoD, I have better results now that i have more upload. With 14/4 i could run a great gaming server. It's been good serving files out in iRC, get lots of access and lots of gigs served even with the 6800/768. i'll be calling up local tech to find out when it's available, could u link to a source to this claim? I know some folx that work in Comcast Support, in knoxville, they say they know nothing of it. they aren't in Tech though. Just customer service. I've had best preformance using a good router, im not trusting enough to go wireless. I can get all kinds of free access downtown, i don't want that happening to me.
